ever since i was a kid this was my favorite mcDonalds sandwich. am i weird, or is it time for the Filet-O-Fish eaters to unite and take over?

JD from CDepot, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I recall a mcdonalds' commercial with a black dude and a white dude talking about the various products available at mcdonalds. they harmonized at fillet-o-fish and they said it slowly, as one might take a slow whistle at a passing woman...

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Haven't had one for years and years, but it's all I ate at fast food places as a kid (I think I wasn't allowed to have burgers).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

ive never had one! i'll try one tonite on the way to party.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely classic, but I haven't had one in years. Whenever the urges get strong enough to overcome the boycott, it seems a waste not to just go for the Big Mac.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

It's the safer option, surely?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Me and a friend asked every single person we knew if they had ever eaten a fillet o fish (because neither of us could recall ever having one or eating with someone having one). I think we found one guy who had.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

They're my favourite! They never have them sitting in the silver slides, so they have to make them specially for you, which is good for freshness reason, but agonising for waiting reasons.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

i used to eat these when i was a kid. i was a vegetarian most of the time, and the only meat i ate was filet-o-fish (plus turkey on thanksgiving and xmas).

i loved the slice of american cheese with the tartar sauce, such a nice combo. i would actually consider going and ordering the sauce, cheese and bun these days, just to see if it works. num.

the dud part was that since i didn't eat burgers, i'd sometimes ask if i could have a filet-o-fish at mcdonalds birthday parties (very common at paw paw elementary school), and i was told they were 'too expensive'. boo. not even any extra fries for poor hungry colette.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

it's the only mcdonald's thing i'll eat (hold the cheese), aside from fries. there's always waaay too much tartar sauce on, though.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

They are a remarkably effective hangover cure for me.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

They always make me think of the Douglas Coupland character who deliberately eats them because soon the seas will be so overfished that they'll be unavailable.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Mmm, tangy tartar sauce. It tastes like batteries!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I used to find the combination of fish, lashings of grease and salt and 'battery' tartar sauce (nice one, Andrew) irresistible. I once ate three in one sitting.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty much the only edible mcdonalds burger, along w/ their chicken sandwich.

Masked Gazza, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

my mum used to always order filet o fish, and always asks for one without the tartar sauce on (so even if there's one on the slide they'd have to make another one - not that that is the intention although it does mean she always gets a new one)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

never had one. speaking of mcdonalds I tried a "big tasty" last week. disgusting. the sauce was like coffee flavouring.

I try to avoid it as best I can but if I do end up there (sometimes on the way to dj or something I get scared I'll be hungry) I usually get nuggets. quick and not messy or causing of bad breath.

a big mac is a fairly reliable hangover cure though .

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

requests that will get you a fresh sandwich are definitely a good idea. has anyone ever had the misfortune of having one that's not piping hot? they harden as they cool (i don't know nor do i want to know why).

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I like the "big tasty" burgers - which also usually have to be made fresh, at least at the McDonalds I most often go to. Well, by "like", I mean "they're less horrible than most of their food, but still have that slightly-addictive thing going on".

Then again, I am also a fan of coffee flavouring - I've always loved things with artificial coffee flavour, even when I hated coffee itself.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

I think I used to order my fish sandwiches "plain" as a kid - no tartar sauce, no cheese, nothing.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I remember about 10 years back McDonalds discontinued the Filet O Fish for some disgusting new fish sandwich. It was an outrage! I never went there again until it was brought back. The Filet O Fish is the one thing from McDonalds that I love and will still occasionally buy to this day.

Leon WK (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

all this love for the filet o fish! i have to admit, last nite i was at mcdonalds in the drive thru, but just couldn't pull the trigger this time, and got the chicken selects instead. oh the chipotle bbq sauce is so tasty, and real chicken. next time, i will try the filet of fish, i promise.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

What oil do they use for the f-o-f?

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Presumably veg oil like everything else - can't imagine why they'd use something different.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

The Filet-O-Fish is borderline offensive, it is so lame. Get one Captain D's sammich.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

so so so so fkn great.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

not on the dollar menu anymore tho =(

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Also, I like that you pronounce it posh. Feelay.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

and a filet-o-fish, for my wife.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I will agree that this is probably the best thing on McDonalds menu. However, that still doesn't really mean anyone should ever eat McDonalds for any reason whatsoever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

except for for their breakfast menu.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

i only came on here to say exactly what RJG just said.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

all this love for the filet-O-fish! i no longer feel so alone....

JD from CDepot, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I considered having one of these for the first time last week but was advised by a couple people not to. I'd still like to try one though

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

http://www.jaybrewer.net/fastfoodfever/cuisine/surf_turf/

You know you want it; the hearty goodness of beef, combined with the flaky delicacy that is fish. But you want the elegance of Surf 'n Turf, without paying Red Lobster prices. The Surf 'n Turf Burger achieves this using only a McDonald's Big 'n Tasty and a Filet-O-Fish.

Just remove the bottom bun from each sandwich, and set both of them aside so you can make Fry Dogs if you're still hungry later. Next, put the two sandwiches against each other, patty-to-patty, as nature intended. Grasp the sandwich by the two top buns, and take a bite. The result is unsurpassed, and is best accompanied by a full-bodied red or white wine, or a fountain orange soda.

PATTY! TO! PATTY!

room full of men screaming at jennifer connelly (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Since when does McD's still have fountain orange soda? All I see anymore is orange Hi-C.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Fascinating Fact:
The McDonald's Big N' Tasty is called the Big Xtra in Canada.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I think I had a filet-o-fish a looooong time ago, like when I was a kid in the 80s. Any time I've been to McDonalds in the past decade or so I get the basic cheeseburger and fries, cos I think they are the only really strong point of the McD menu. Everything else is better elsewhere. (Well, obvs cheeseburgers are better elsewhere, but McD cheeseburgers have unique properties.)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

well i'm going to get one of these tonight. you've all convinced me. consider yourselves part of the machine.

except battery-acid boy up there, you almost did it all by your lonesome. all we needed was ken c coming here to talk about what filet o fish does to his shit or something and i wuold be eating natural organic goodness tonight. but i guess it's not to be.

orgianic goodness, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

400 calories & 18 grams of fat? my vegetarianism aside, no thanks.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I had one about six months ago. It was MINISCULE. And also a bit on the cold side.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I've never had one, but conceptually, they seem like the most disgusting thing ever. Fish from McDonalds? Like in Ohio or somewhere? Fried? WITH TARTER SAUCE AND AMERICAN CHEESE? Bleerererreguugh.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

EXACTLY.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm eating one now, mmmm!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Any *sea*food when you're right in the middle of a large continent sounds slightly iffy as a concept.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 14 April 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for advocating the return of the Goiter Belt Days, caitlin. I'm sure the elderly people in Lincoln, NE, and their memories of painful, engorged necks will surely appreciate more of the same. ;)

Anyway. Filet-o-Fish sandiwches from McDonald's are one of the ways my mom and I get through Lent, being that (a.) we actually go through the whole ritual of abstaining from meat on Friday at that time (fish is allowed, though) and (b.) we live in a city that's roughly 70% Catholic and pretty much every one of those is a devout one, so good luck trying to secure a seat at a "real" seafood restaurant for lunch or dinner every Friday during Lent. So we have to think creatively, or eat hours before or after normal eating times. So -- hey, bring on the Mickey D's and their fish sandwich concoction. Which is surprisingly good, really, and is curiously the only thing I can get from McDonald's that won't make me feel sick after eating it. Well, that and the Big Mac. They seem to do well with sandwiches that involve a sort of slightly mysterious-looking sauce. Everything else? Instant Revenge of Ronald McDonald, if you know what I mean.

I am that unhip, naive nobody you always avoid. (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 14 April 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

Weirdly, one of the best pieces of fish I've ever had in my life was in a hotel in Denver. The waiter told me their supplier flew it in daily.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 14 April 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

This thread enticed me to McDonald's yesterday evening and what a wonderful guilty pleasure it was. I was almost disappointed to find that the fish actually tasted of fish. The only problem was that, no matter how many times I washed my hands and face and sucked strong mints, I stank for hours afterwards.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

400 calories & 18 grams of fat? my vegetarianism aside, no thanks

That's only 20% of your recommended daily intake, though. You could have five!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

Dee, could you not, like, cook some fish at home during Lent and on Fridays? Or eat vegetarian for a day?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Sort of off-topic, but last time I was at McDix, about three weeks ago, the first time in months, I was with my younger psycho mafia, at the late nite university location, really late, around 3-4 am, with all the uni kids fresh back from getting crunked at bars I wouldn't be caught dead in. The kids surrounding us were all of the age when you talk about getting drunk a lot because it means you're free, adult, and not boring, all hyped up and overconfident, talking about all the CRAZY stuff that happened while drinking tequila in the club. My crew and I are silently eating, sort of mutterchuckling to each other re: cornballitude of surroundings, when I drop my lighter. One of the surrounding kids picks it up and hands it back to me, and I say Thanks, dude! One of my boys then pulls out his bag, dips his house key into it, pulls out a disgustingly giant bump of yayo, and offers it to aforementioned helpful kid. His whole table is flabbergasted, my boy says never mind and loudly skronks the shit up his hooter. Entire restaurant goes dead silent for a good 30 seconds. I've decided to drop back out of fulltime school, because it's holding me back from writing/music $$$, and because situations like the above happen too regularly. I am friendly, smart, and still quite fresh-faced but pretty much all faculty or students on campus, after a few weeks in my company, realizes pretty quick that I have an utter absence of any form of humanity to which they can relate. I'm taking french this summer, just because I like the neighborhood (many jumbotrons and foliage), but that's probably it for education. Filet-O-Fishes are okay but too oily - OTM whoever was talking about the lingering taste/smell - 2000x worse for me given my tactile-defensivity (I have to shower, shave, brush, and baby powder my entire body after I eat something like a Filet O Fish even good as them shits is - I guess I'm the polar opposite of those guys that can eat anything, sleep over for three or four days w no toothbrush, and have the most horrendous dragon without knowing it (partially because I never tell anyone they got the dragon)).

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 14 April 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Fish from McDonalds? Like in Ohio or somewhere?

Yeah, it's a shame Ohio isn't on a large body of water where fresh fish is available.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Because, you know, McDonalds in coastal states has fresh fish.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

The ingredients on McDonald's Canadian website say the Filet - O - Fish Patty is "Cod or Alaskan Pollock or Hoki"".

They're not quite sure?

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

No, it means that the fish used in the sandwich is subject to availability and the market - they probably use whatever is freshest and cheapest and available in massive quantities when manufacturing the patties. Also, they might process different fish together, and some patties contain meat from two or three different types of fish.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Well now that doesn't make Filet-O-Fish production sound nearly as disgusting.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Sandwichist

Leon WK (Ex Leon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Dee, could you not, like, cook some fish at home during Lent and on Fridays? Or eat vegetarian for a day?

(a.) We've done that plenty of times before in the past. It's just... convenience, you know? Sometimes we get lazy. Or sometimes Mom wants enchiladas and I... well, I want anything BUT Mexican food. So, at those times, McDonald's fish sandwiches come in handy.

(b.) Vegetarian? Hm. *I* could try that out, certainly. I could have a fakin' bacon BLT for dinner or something. And a BK veggie burger for lunch. Yeah. But something healthier/fully veggie would not exactly be prudent for me because there are so few veggie options in town. I don't know. I'll have to try it out sometime soon.

I am that unhip, naive nobody you always avoid. (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)
