Age of Empires is the first video game that I got hooked on since the Atari 2600 days.

The Japanese Samurai in the expansion pack are wicked.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 8 September 2005 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

O god, I'm gonna need to upgrade to XP aren't I?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

early word on SA is that it's essentially a prettier AOE2, with an uglier interface

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

This is convenient, work is about to by me a windows laptop with a decent graphics card.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 September 2005 06:11 (nineteen years ago)

I finally got WinXP on my system last week, so I can finally play this. It looks really good; not as good as the renders, of course, but fun enough. Lookit my little musketmen blast the hell out of civilians! Fire them rockets!

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 29 January 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

and the "customize your home city" bit is cute. like so.

It amounts to not much more than a Sims-like "outfit your room", but it's still cute.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 29 January 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

this sucks after 1 and 2

splates (splates), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

Still waiting for my copy to arrive. Grrrr.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 30 January 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

the lack of AOE2's extensive formation & patrol options is a bit of a disappointed. Also, with some fiddling, you could really make naval battles a great part of the game, but it's currently not that well set up to handle a fleet.

I do like the fact that your Hero can get a dog, to helping with the explorin' and treasure diggin' and whatnot.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I need mac version. Badly.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

My fucking graphics card isn't good enough! ARGH!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

really? I'm using an almost 3-year-old Radeon 9500 Pro. I just put the sliders for "Shaders" and "Shadows" down to as low as they'd go, and my frame rate doubled.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 2 February 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm an eejit cos I panicked earlier (see above) then slid everything down after checking option smenu in the demo I'd just downloaded. So far I've reached 'pirates' but now, well bed calls. Until tomorrow my pretty little malteser, until tomorrow...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 3 February 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

Home city / CARDS is *really* well done, they really mix up the game without totally unbalancing it. I don't understand why people are calling it a cosmetic tweak :(

Apparently they had a guy whose sole job for the whole of development was doing the water reflections! They are so much prettier than any real world thing.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 3 February 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

I've found that I'm severely hindered if the map has no water access. My playstile is such as to build a dock as soon as possible and start churning out fishing boats as fast as possible. The AI doesn't seem to rely upon aggressive naval attacks as much as the usual land-based ones, so while all your farmers at shooting at an invading cadre of british longbowmen, your boats still hunt.

Hell, how many games have whaling as a gameplay element? It'll be 300 years before they're close to extinction; let's hunt us some beluga!

I've finally reached the point where G. Washington is in the game, during the Seven Years War bit.

that sounds so exciting, it's a shame i traded in my gaming machine for a mac ibook.

Peter Densmore (pbnmyj), Sunday, 5 February 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Three days later and I'm on the last mission. Wow. Short game or empty weekend, you decide! I love it but it is a little bit easy. That's not to say that I won't enjoy online at some point.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 6 February 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

fourteen years pass...

I'm looking for an RTS warcraft style game that me and a friend can play online. Is AoE 3 the best?

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 09:25 (four years ago)

Tbh there's a reason the AoE2 scene is still very much alive and kicking while AoE3 languishes in comparative obscurity. StarCraft 1&2 remain RTS gold standards in terms of sheer competitiveness, but they're not for casuals (and I include myself in that category). I mean, neither is AoE2 at the highest levels, it just feels more forgiving due to its less kinetic pace.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 13:05 (four years ago)

seconding aoe2, classic. some old friends and i play matches online every couple months and it's a blast

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 13:59 (four years ago)

Age of Empires II also had a remaster last year, so is the better-looking of the two.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 13:29 (four years ago)

I assume Ste’s question was prompted by the more or less imminent release of AoE3’s own Definitive Edition on October 15, but I prefer AoE2’s folksier art style anyway. I’m hoping they’ll also take up Age of Mythology, which deserves way better than the half-assed remaster we got a few years ago.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 13:34 (four years ago)

correct sir.

I do like the look of II more if I'm honest. It's not currently breaking the bank so I think I'll give II a try and maybe III later this year.
