Do you DRINK gravy? Is that gross?

I just had a KFC combo meal that comes with a tub of gravy, I didn't finish it all, but it was so tasty that I picked up the tub and drunk it all.

Was that gross? I did it in the office and now I feel everyone's eyes are looking at me in condemnation and disgust.

Do YOU do this? In public? Or just a guilty pleasure at home? And of course feel free to LOG OUT first if you feel a confession may affect your social standings within ilx. or that at your next job interview people would google your name and discover that YOU DRANK GRAVY!! FUCK! GROSS. MINGING#'1 ETC

there's nothing wrong with drinking gravy, other than the 'vulgarity'. i mean it's not as if gravy tastes bad is it?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

God I love drinking gravy. Chicken gravy from KFC is yummy and a rare instance in the south to get nice, gloopy VISCOUS gravy like us northern gets have been used to in more sensible climes. I adore gravy.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

see steve brings up a good point - it's not DESIGNED to be drunk, but if it tastes good, then what is it in particular that makes it disgusting??! if it's inherently gross you wouldn't put it on your food in the first place.. or maybe the flavour is too intense for a lot of people to consume this on its own?

xpost yay ste!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

what about drinking bovril? People do that, and that's just gravy really.

Oh my god! Bovril doesn't have beef in it any more! Nobody told me!

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I'll drink Bovril, or beef oxo with loads of black pepper - ideal camping drink.

Thick gravy though - ewwww.

Kev drinks the vinegar from the pickle jar. STOP THAT!

Rumpie, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Yer what? Man, vegetarians can drink Bovril now? Feh, is nothing sacred.

Ken, it might have been slightly bad public form to drink your gravy. It's the kind of thing you should do at home so no-one has to see your post-gravoital grin i.e. nasty but great.

Canadians, and anyone considering coming to Canada, should get gravy from A & W (my guess is that the US ones wouldn't have the same stuff) and drink any excess. I have done this many times and I'm never sorry.

I'm with the vinegar drinkers. Especially the purple stuff at the bottom of a jar of beetroot. MMmmmmm. It's the greatest thing I ever learned from my dad. The mister thinks this is freaky.

I have never had KFC gravy. I've never even thought of involving gravy in a KFC meal. Why would you?

My pet hate of gravy-related things = when you go somewhere that is doing carvery roasts or various different roast meats of some description and they only have one jug of uniform meh gravy to pour over whichever of the several different types of meat that you've ordered. If you're making roast beef/lamb/pork/chicken/turkey, how difficult is it to make different gravies out of the juices from each one? (answer: not very)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 October 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

BECHAMEL SAUCE

6 tsp. unsalted butter
6 tsp. flour
1 qt. (4 c.) milk
1 onion
1 tsp. salt

Scald 1 qt. milk while being careful not to curdle.
In a saucepan, melt butter, add flour, combine well and whisk until golden brown. Gradually stir in the scalded milk, then add the onion. Cook over low heat for about an hour, stirring occasionally.

Strain through cheesecloth.

NOWHERE DOES IT SAY "Drink like this was a potable concoction on its own."

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 6 October 2006 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm meh about gravy-drinking. It's not for me, but I'm not especially disgusted that others like it. I'm sure there are more unhealthful ways of getting your kicks.

But for some reason, what really grossed me out was reading that wikipedia article about Bovril.

I read there that they put the beef back in after the EU ban on British beef was lifted in 2005. Pity since I might've given a yeast-based Bovril a go. I'm afraid I couldn't stomach HP sauce. Does that mean I wouldn't like yeast-based Bovril?

Melinda Mess-injure (Melinda Mess-injure), Friday, 6 October 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

Back to the gravy slurping...A friend of mine worked in the dining commons of the dorms at Cal. She told me how she once stopped these Korean stoodents from mistakenly drinking gravy as soup. The gravy tureens were placed where soup normally goes, so it was understandable that the foreign students just thought the soup was especially thick, fatty, and salty that day. Western food, especially institutional food, is usually that way.

But now that I read this thread 15 or so years later, I think it's possible they wanted to quaff the gravy in copious amounts...er probably not.

Ken C. would've been in paradise: Just imagine all the gravy you could ever want to slurp down. And no one would socially disapprove of you; they'd just think you were a foreign stoodent and chalk it down to cultural differences.

Melinda Mess-injure (Melinda Mess-injure), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:04 (nineteen years ago)
