"unsalted" chips/fries C/D!?

Okay, more KFC/fastfood I'm afraid..

So now the new fangled thing seems to be "UNSALTED" chips. They come unsalted but give you packets of salt to add yourself.

Right, I never used to add any salt to pre-salted chips before, but now I have to, and I end up just putting in a packet into the chips, which just gets put on unevenly (I even tried shaking the packet a few times, but still some chips get half a side covered in salt whereas some are untouched), it's just so much more difficult to apply within that tiny bag that the chips come in (compared with that giant chips oven thing they have with the Spatula.

And also I probably end up eating more salt than I would have done if they just pre-salted them lightly in the first place!!

Does anyone think it's actually a good idea?

unsalted chips second only to Osama Bin Flat Coca-Cola in the list of WORLD'S GREATEST EVILS

so you think it's dud, then?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Tut, it's all about more and more spurious 'choices' these days isn't it?

I think I like this concept actually. I haven't been to KFC/MacDs/BK for ages, and I don't think either my local chippy or burger bar salt the chips anyway. Much nicer. But is there salt IN THE CHIP somehow before it is fried? Hm.

I thought this thread was about *crisps* at first. I also like no salt on crisps.

What determines people's taste for salt, sugar, hotness etc anyway?

i like girls to be unsalted, a sugar, and hott.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

but more seriously, i guess this thing is like a "health" initiative too, like "hey look we don't put salt in your chips, you bring your heart attack on YOURSELVES with this level of sodium abuse!! yeah! next we're draining all oil from the chicken but with bottles of it for you to re-apply yourself! yay!"

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

even unsalted fast food fries have a shitload of sodium in them. but ken is right, the get more evenly salted when it's done immediately after they're removed from the fryer. it's also better if the salt is more granulated and less like powdered sugar.

KFC chips are terrible in any case

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

oh I like this move! it always pisses me off when people put salt on chips as if that is how they should naturally be eaten. it's disgusting.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

you're kidding steve.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't like salt on my chips, only tons and tons of vinegar, but I put that on when I get home because otherwise the paper sticks.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

nope ken, they're the worst out there in fast food land imo - never hot enough, too soft (disappointing halfway house between squishy chip shop style and Mcdonalds level of crispiness).

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

i guess it depends what you look for in your chips, for me it's the perfect compromise because they're neatly shaped (unlike chipshop chips) and also they are the ideal squishyness for dipping into the chicken gravy!! (see other thread)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

It depends on whether the chips/fries are tasty.

If not tasty, then pass the salt like it's courvoisier.

I'm with Stevem, KFC chips are the worst, wet cardboardy, horrible chips in junk food land.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I like the burger king ones okay (but that involves going to burger king, plus also they have onion rings which i love), the mcdonalds ones always seem very .. unfulfilling! (they're crispy and all but they're so skinny)

if you are eating chips from kfc/mcds/bk etc, why on god's green earth would you be likely to care abt the effect of a bit of salt on your health?

stelfox, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

thirded! my flatmate had some kfc the other day in a fit of temporary insanity, and the chips were rank. and i love chips. i mean REALLY LOVE THEM.

exactly!! i just want salt applied nicely on them

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Cuz they used to put a ton of salt on some of them, and hardly any on others.

Amber's going to love this...

Unsalted crisps are hardly a new-fangled thing. In the dim and distant past, *all* crisps came this way, which is why plain, unflavoured-but-salted crisps are still called "Ready Salted".

(we had this debate in the office this morning, as it happens. The conclusion was: dud, because as mark says you end up with loads of salt on some and none on others.)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

You gotta salt them when the grease is still wet, so the salt sticks. "Healthier" fast food is an oxymoron.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

if you're getting them as fast food in those little cardboard packets, then they have to be salted ahead of time. If you're getting them on a plate where theres plenty of room to move around, i like them unsalted, then i lightly salt and pepper as i go.
