Yuk yuk yuk - childhood food fads

Yeuch - some of the things we used to eat as kids, don't know how unique these ones are to the west of Scotland but I'm sure we were all guilty of eating things that would turn our stomachs now.

A brown sauce sandwich? A tomato sauce sandwich? And the worst one of the lot - a sugar sandwich....

I used to always pester my mum to buy me Farleys Rusks as well, right up until I was about 14. I tried them again a few weeks ago and they are absolutely disgusting!

My mum remembers with fondness something called 'saps' - bread soaked in warm milk with sugar mixed in. I cannot imagine anyone eating that now...

Lemon Curd. Used to love it. Tried it recently. Did not love it. Yuk!

Remember 'Fluff' - marshmallow in a jar?

I used to love spreading that on toast. My teeth are crumbling at the thought.

My grandmother used to eat these for breakfast every morning. I think it's a real paisano meal.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

i bought marianna lcl a tub of Fluff when i went to visit America.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Sugar sandwiches: yum

Another thing I used to have a lot when I was small: raw beaten egg mixed with milk and sugar.

Remember 'Fluff' - marshmallow in a jar?

Thanks to my favorite ilx thread ever, I will NEVER forget Fluff.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

my flatmate bought me fluff from selfridge's food hall when i first got here to remind me of home.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I used to request butter and honey sandwiches (instead of the standard PB&H sandwiches) though I rarely go them. Later I was into frying Vienna sausages and eating them in a sandwich with mustard.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I never delved into that sort of thing as the thought always repulsed me. I've never even had a fluffernutter sandwich, nor do I even know what this, and so I've received crazy looks from many people for that.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

the funny thing about my gift of fluff is that i'd never had it, nor had i really seen it much in america.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

what about crunched up ramen noodles (uncooked) with the msg pack used on it like salt on chips?

it used to be THE thing to do back in primary school in hong kong.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I used to have PB&Butter sandwiches. ok I do still eat them on occasion.

Also: Little Debbie Cakes. I've never had fluff though.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

And it was trendy in grade school to drink Capri Sun at lunch because it came in a POUCH.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah! someone at work yesterday bought capri sun that came in a can! i didn't ask too many questions but i hope this doesn't mean they don't come in a pouch anymore.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else had ants on a log recently?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Ants on a log? Pray tell - what is this?

Rumpie, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Marmalade sandwiches and NOTHING ELSE for months. I also had an odd way of eating Smarties: soak them in water until the sugar coating dissolves, then store them in the fridge until they're all a uniform off-white colour and completely unrecognisable either by sight or taste. Yum.

Mind you, my sister used to eat margarine out of the tub with a spoon, so...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

ants on a log are celery sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Anyone remember Quenchy Cups? Cola flavoured drinks in a flimsy plastic carton that you pierced with the straw? They could be frozen as well. We called them Jubilees when they were frozen....

Rumpie, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

your sister and I should get married, archel

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Red Leicester cheese melted onto water biscuits in the microwave so it sits in a pool of its own grease. Utterly filthy and compelling.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

10p mix from the icey

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I went through a brief horseradish sauce sandwich phase when I was 8 or 9. Also crisps, cheese and ketchup sammiches.

Richard C (avoid80), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Liz - that sounds DIVINE

Rumpie, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I might have some when I get home from the gym (heh).

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Crisp sandwiches, salt & vinegar preferably. Banana sandwiches as well but never crisps and banana.

lock robster (robster), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Peanut Butter & Banana sandwiches, which I still love.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

(not a euphamism but) Fish finger sarnies! It's been donkey's years since I endulged.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

My brother used to fill a glass 2/3rds with milo powder (choc malt stuff for milk drinks) and then top it up with a splash of milk, so the cup was full of this muddy chocmalt gloop.

or these:

http://www.e-zgrocer.com/images/04/04088.jpg

but not this kind - the kind with the little red plastic stick.

kids in my school were also obsessed with those kind of sausage like tubes of fakey orange cheese that had a little star shaped valve on the side. I forget what the hell those were called, but damn, just wrong.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

when i was a kid things like spaghettios and lunchables were all the rage, but my parents never let us have them (which i am super thankful for now).
when we'd stay at our babysitter's in the summer, they would feed us beenie weenies.
then, my sister threw up after a marriage of beanie weenie and merry go round at the playground.
that was the end of beenie weenies.

tehresa (tehresa), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

With those Capri Sun pouches you have to make sure to poke the straw in the bottom. That's the real cool way to drink it.

I used to like microwaving handfuls of gummi bears so that the different colors and flavors would pool together into a blob. You have to be real careful with the time though because it doesn't take much. The gummi bears can turn very quickly into nuclear gummi soup.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

What was the square gum with a burst of goop in the middle? The commercials had a tidal wave theme. Was it Tidal Wave gum? That doesn't sound right.

I always wanted Big League Chew but my parents wouldn't let me get it.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Bacon bits sandwiches (yknow those fake-bacon pieces? mmmm)
Rice Bubbles with milk and chocolate Quik powder (cos mum wouldn't buy Coco Pops)
Egg & Breadcrumbs (2 poached eggs mashed into torn up bread til it looks like vomit/oatmeal...YUM!)
Weetbix with hot water, sugar, and enough milk to make it into creamy goo.
Nan's homemade scones, microwaved with a cheese slice on top.
Tiny Teddys (I would eat the head, the arms, then the legs off each one til I had a bag of Tiny Teddy tummies.)

What was the square gum with a burst of goop in the middle? = Freshen-Up?
