When did the Doberman jump the shark?

They were THE badass dog of my childhood, but now I rarely see them. I was TERRIFIED of Dobermans when little, but the Pitbull has usurped them in the public eye. German Shepherds seem like sweet family dogs compared to pits and canarios (or whatever they're called), but they used to be badass too.

I see pitbulls everyday now, several times a day, but they used to be rare, only a few stoner/rocker dudes kept them, before they became thug fashion items.

Rottweilers are, and always will be, classic.

My dad had a friend with two dobermans who, though nervous and restless as any other dobermans, were extremely affectionate. The first time we wnet to his house both of the dogs jumped me and I thought I was going to die but they just tried to lick me to death. He got burgled once and surmised that the dogs were really happy to have the company.

But when they have the ears & tail docked = PURE EVIL

I like to imagine a doberman jumping over a shark. The contrasting black sleekness. The shark leaps out of the water and snags the doberman in his teeth. But the doberman drags the shark onto the beach and pins it to the ground. They stare in each others eyes. And kiss.

i've wondered about this before as well. a doberman on a chain and a countach in your circular driveway. that was the pinnacle.

It's the same thing that killed TLC's "Trading Spaces" - overexposure. People watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off 50 times and they start thinking of the doberman as passe, like a red Ferrari.

I only know that "Waterfall" song, and I could listen to that all day.

T-Boz would be a great name for a doberman.

I think at least 1/2 of all the dobermans I've ever seen were wearing bandanas.

my brother's wife has a miniature doberman...not threatening. totally adorable, though! she's a really sweet little dog.

Yeah, well mini-dobies don't count - s'like a spider monkey on King Kong's lap.

I have to say, this is a really good thread question. How can a dog go out of style? All I see around my neighborhood is pugs and other little cute dogs, though my hood is pretty yuppy-ey. Maybe all the dobermans are out in the rich people suburbs, like the gated communities? That's where I imagine them.

Well didn't chihuahua sales skyrocket after those stupid Taco Bell ads? I know my dumb stepbrother bought TWO.

And what about the poor potbellied pigs? Man, those went WAY out of style, now they have rescue centers because when people sober up they realize they bought a fucking PIG.

We just had a Dobe pass away recently. He loved all humans and hated all dogs. Funny, I hate all humans and love all dogs. Ben would lean on you all day if you'd let him. Not the dog from the classic 70's Dobesploitation film, "The Doberman Gang."
