Fighting - classic or dud?

I have seen a couple of fist fights in my time. If I was rock hard I think it would be kinda fun to smack someone I really disliked from one side of the bar to the other. As I am not rock hard I do not and physical violence seems all very nasty and undesirable to me.

ha!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

i will buck the consensus and say kinda classic as long as they just produce a black eye or two and a grudging handshake. (does this ever happen tho?)

Keep me out of your S&M fantasies, wouldya?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

dude calum you gotta learn how to headbutt, you could waylay a motherfucker with that melon.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

one thread a day dickface.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Ned, you gotta leave the computer man. Just leave the computer, put down the doughnut, wash your hair... who knows man, you might lose your virginity?!

NamC, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

advising 'wash your hair' reveals you don't know what you're talking about there.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

calum, next time try one search function and revive thread k?

------, Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

no, Calum, next time try walking off the edge of a cliff, ok? Funny, I almost was ready to at least tolerate you as a provacative nuisance, and then you had to go and opine on Andrea Dworkin. You are an incurable asshole.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah don't say anything about an obese sexist homophobic bully like Dworkin - ooooh no. You go live in Dworkin's world buddy - go and build a society where guns are handy and censorship is the norm. YOU silly, silly child. Lots and lots and lots of laughter @ this forum. Thankyou.

Namc, Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

You seem like a smart guy, is the thing. If you weren't so bigoted, someone might listen to you. Do you not understand that the fact that Dworkin was overweight is irrelevant to any discussion of her? If you can't get past that one thing, how can anyone expect to have any conversation with you about anything? Andrea Dworkin suffers greatly from lack of context, and you seem to want to the very embodiment of lack of context. This does not make you look smart.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

But don't you also think that some overweight people could do with getting help and/ or advice for the sake of their health? Perhaps this may have helped Dworkin live - as she lived a horrible, tragic, perhaps understandably bitter life. You know, a member of my family has had to lose weight over the years for their own good and I honestly think that telling people they need to slim can be the best thing. No one likes to hear it do they? "Listen, you've put on weight - do some excercise". It is disheartening and a horrible thing to hear but on the other hand do you not think it gives you the push and drive to do something about it? Why didn't Dworkin? Considering the target of her anger was men and (good looking) women who flaunt themselves - would one take her more seriously if she didn't resemble the troll from the Billy Goat Gruff? Just a thought.

NamC, Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Irrelevant!

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

calum you might wanna find things to compare people to besides trolls dude. we've seen your skull man.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe it took a thread about Andrea Dworkin for someone to see that Calum can be Mr. Tiresome Offensive One-Note.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought all of his threads were about Andrea Dworkin????

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

It didn't... thanks for all the credit... but he was starting to seem almost reasonable until then.

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME CASE STUDY: SUBJECT #1

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Calum -

1) You don't bother me at all, or haven't since a thread sometime in August (I think). But I do bristle at the personal snipery in which you seem, frequently, to engage.

2) In my observation the nasty, moralizing judgements you make of political opponents (Dworkin, f'rinstance) completely and systematically undermine any (often) valid point you may wish to convey. That she may have needed to lose weight is true, and I have no problem with the fact that you consider she should be told. However: there is an order-of-magnitude difference between a family member telling her to slim-down and a kid on the internet comparing her to a troll.

3) It can be bristling to me a lot of other regulars when you presume to be sticking-up for a politically-justifiable position by acting like a lunatic. On the thread in which we - you and I - argued, I made a joke about shooting animals with a blunderbuss. You took no time in attacking me as a purveyor of heartless douchebaggery and felt justified in a knee-jerk personal assault even though I explained I was kidding. So I ask you: would you please read the posts with a critical eye before responding in a fly-off-the-handle manner?

Sincerely,

Remy and the concerned legions of fed-up posters.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I thought all of his threads were about Andrea Dworkin????

They're all about the strawman right-wing version of Andrea Dworkin, which gives her zero credit and assumes the worst of her. It's ugly.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, Remy, I believe he would call that boring, complain about your lack of contacts in the film industry, and then assume you would care he's going to Cannes to try and get publicists to fondle him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

(Actually, I'm still laughing at his perception that San Francisco is the heavy petting Mecca. No wonder tourists like it so much!)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

... one time... in the castro...

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Classic when I win, dud when I lose. Always dud if weapons or 'backup' are involved, and this varies from city to city eg. where I live you don't fight brown guys or nammers even if you can take them because it'll only be fair for about three seconds and then you're basically pho.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but a full dish of pho with all the trimmings or just a lump of meat with no hoisin? THIS IS IMPORTANT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Sort of back to the original question,

The situation is posit that
1) By not being hard, a person is anti violence.
2) Conversely, if you are, violence is a handy weapon, therefore 'pro-violence if the situation calls for' and all that bollox.

I don't think this is an unreasonable question...

I'm not a hard. But also, the idea of 'smacking one' who was annoying/irritating/threatening is not something I desire...

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

I have hooves! do not argue.

$V£N! channelling Mark S aka Dr Hoo (blueski), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

I wager good money on anyone who is fighting Ken.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

so who's gonna fight me?????

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

if no one shows up, does that mean i take martin's cash?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

You'll probably have to fight him for it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I'll bet with considerable confidence on me winning a fight against Ken. Except actually I wouldn't fight Ken, as it would just feel like bullying.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

haha well hand over the money then, big guy.

so martin wouldn't fight me cos he's too hard and he'd feel too bad about hurting little ken. who's going to do it??

it doesn't even have to be a painful fight you know, you can submit anytime!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 15 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

nobody?

do you think fist fights with your friends would always harm a friendship? even if there is arrangment beforehand to say that it's just a fight, no strings attached?

i'm starting a new thread about this, actually

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

ken, I haven't been in a fight for years and years and years. But I'll take you up on it. Fly me over, fool.

Remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

Hey, who do you think would win? You or me?

Remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

there's only one way to find out, remy!

maybe the winner can go on to fight Martin!

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

JimD has just joined the battle royale for the right to challenge the immortal Martin Skidmore!!
Would fist fights amongst friends always harm a friendship?

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 16 April 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

I thought keeping quiet might be the best way out of this one, but it seems not to be the case. I haven't been on that thread, but I can see nothing but harm coming from such things. I can only think of I think four or five ILX people of the 100 or so I've met where fighting with them wouldn't feel like bullying; and I have no desire to fight with anyone, of course.

Am I going to have to show you my muscles sometime, Ken?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 16 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

depends which one, martin! i've already seen one particular muscle.

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 16 April 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

but yeah i wanna see some biceps!
