he does not have any of the formal redemption of people like eggelston or shore; he does not have the conceptual heft of someone like ruscha; he is boring--he takes bad fotographs of industrial parks and suburban housing in black and white, like the real estate ads and fone books of small communities no one cares about.

but the artlessness is artful.

hes the lost hero of the new topographics.

his colour ones from the mid90s are worse then the grey ones from the 70s.

why do i care ?

My takes on these photos, which you already know but hey, up for addition to the discussion:

#1: Whoa, does that font look old. And the trees -- yeah, you have a point there.

#2: He certainly seems to have a fondness for the dark and black. But in an industrial sort of sense, not in a goth one.

#3: Again, haunting. Also kinda scary.

#4: I know buildings aren't supposed to be dead, but that building looks dead.

#5: That photo -- you get the impression there's a ghost beyond that window and it's staring right back at you.

I am that unhip, naive nobody you always avoid. (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 14 April 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)
