The US Air Force -- your prime source for Ecstasy

Or well, it was.

Around 290,000 Ecstasy pills in 28 large bags were found in the two men's luggage after their Air Force C-5A cargo aircraft arrived at the Stewart Air National Guard base in Newburgh, New York State.

The pills are said to have a street value of up to $40 each.

The two men allegedly loaded the drugs into their bags in a hotel room in Germany, on their way back from delivering training supplies to the former Soviet state of Georgia.

Security officials who interviewed the two men said Capt Rodriguez had admitted transporting Ecstasy on this and several previous occasions and taken the drugs to his New York City apartment for distribution.

Sgt Fong admitted bringing drugs on three previous flights and being paid $10,000 each time.

The modern version of smuggling back heroin from Vietname in body bags, I assume.

The NYTimes article has a lot more detail on this. Those wacky ANG guys!

Don't have a link, but a few weeks ago some US military "advisors" in Colombia were arrested for smuggling cocaine back into the US.

paid $10,000 each time

Considering the amount of risk they were taking, and the value of the stuff they were transporting, this seems like awfully low compensation.

My dad always said that if he were somehow in charge of the military the first thing he'd do is dissolve the Air Force completely or at the least strip it down to some long range bombers and spy planes and not much more. (I believe he said this first at the height of his chief of staff days with a carrier group, so I think there was bias.)

This has long been true of the forces, no? I once had dealings with a (very dodgy) car dealer who told me he'd once bought an ex-Army Land Rover at auction and found the spare tyre stuffed with bags of cocaine. He contacted the relevant authorities, not wanting an unexpected visit from some armed men in uniforms. (Personally I always suspected his own involvement but that's another story) I can't imagine there's much risk involved for the smugglers, and it's a lot easier to physically shift pills and powders than weapons. They must have been pretty sloppy.

I can't wait for the inevitable Law and Order episode.

I think it is significantly more expensive in the US than in Europe.

yeah, check e-bay...

$40 is ridiculous. Every time they do a drug bust, they overinflate the street value to come off as G-Men. You always hear that with weed busts, where they start referring to baby pot plants as having a street value of $60K or something, fuck the pigs.
