is common. is there a better, clearer convention that you'd rather see?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Good luck trying to establish one, in any case.

No.

"Good luck trying to establish one, in any case." (RS_LaRue, 2005)

Than I guess it'd be someting like:

LaRue, R. S. (2005) "How do you quote prior posts on ILX" How do you quote prior posts on ILX , accessed 15/4/2005

Or maybe Alan should be the author of the thread.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

obv, should be internet address.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to see the quote automatically italicised and indented. JSL

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

through what mechanism?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

there are message boards that have a *quote button*. that's what he means, no?

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, Dave. Mightn't that confuse if we're quoting, nested, in text? Plus I'd hate to think of how many indents 'fuck washing a hat' might have... it'd probably be a page wider than it was long.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

so another button/link next to each post which pastes the content wrapped in some tags of some sort.

ok, and how would that quote then look in your post?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. I wonder if such a quote button could be included at the end of a post's date information. You know, after the 'later' bit or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

what's wrong with italics? it works ok.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

It should be in color.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I like the utter flexibility and simplicity of this interface.

This sort of thing was inevitable.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

(That was meant to blink. I guess that tag is no longer supported, or I messed up.)

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I like the italics.

adam (adam), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Less things which make ILX work-unfriendly, please!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Do you mean work-unfriendly or cobbing-off-at-work-unfriendly?

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

why not implement a stylesheet for ilx that makes <quote> tags stand out. then people will use it!

This could be problematic.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 15 April 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, on other boards, the indented, placed in a box italicised quoting works well; though one thing ILX doesn't suffer from as much is pedantic nitpicking of the text of others - this is something that quoting makes easier.

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 16 April 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

"Do you mean work-unfriendly or cobbing-off-at-work-unfriendly?"

Reading forums at work is a growth industry.

I don't like the way other boards look. Next thing you'll know, we'll be infected with smileys here.

OTM. Or dancing elephants.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Sunday, 17 April 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

I like it that ILX doesn't have an automatic quote option; quotes are rarer then, and that makes it feel more like a natural conversation. Other thing that's good is that we don't have the ability to answer a particular message. Boards which have that option are impossible to read.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

quotes suck on other boards because so many people get lazy and quote each other's entire posts and all of the sudden pages get miles long and impossible to read.
