The Last Time You... Shoplifted!

Hmmm...

I think it was about five years ago. I stole a four-leaf clover necklace from an overpriced snobby antique store. It was an ACTUAL four-leaf clover encased in a little brass & glass container.

Once I got caught shoplifting a Thin Lizzy tape when I was plenty old enough to know better, from a Long's Drugs.

Is this different from just plain stealing? The last time I shoplifted was when I was 15, in Kmart. The last time I stole something was about a year ago, from the store room of a temp job. I needed a new keyboard.

I took some batteries out of a bin that was outside of a gas station in Nashville and neglected to walk inside and pay for them. I needed them for ROAD TUNES.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

No, shoplifting is LIFTING FROM A SHOP.

I did Dine & Ditch at a rude mediocre Italian restaurant a couple years ago, but that's not shoplifting.

it's been a long time but I was the master of this in high school and my first few years of college. the berkeley ASUC bookstore: cleaned 'em out. there was a Walden's books that actually stocked good books at the mall near my house in highschool: cleaned it out. I still have a vast library partially because of this. never ever got caught.

my friend shoplifted a $300 Donna Karan beret from Nordstrom's; it was in a CASE, she asked them to take it out so she could look at it, then stuck it in her pocket and walked off. Still the balls-iest nab I ever witnessed.

akm (akmonday), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

i used to steal tapes/records until i got caugt at a Tower Records. the last time was about 4 yrs ago, some friends and i went on a mini-spree, ending up at a Kmart where i walked out the door carrying a new pillow for my bed.

and yes it's different from stealing, cuz that would be last nite when i clicked on a yousendit link.

This is not "stealing". Taking something from an office that isn't using it is merely redistributing technology.

Can't recall last time I shoplifted. I was really young the few times I ever did it. Think it was a GoBot.
Last thing I stole: music, last night.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

about 6 mos. ago. took the cartridge/stylus from the tone arm of an old turntable in local thrift shop for use on my own.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I accidentally shoplifted a bunch of sliced cheese from the grocery earlier this month...the packages slipped down between the baby-seat and the shopping cart proper, and I just walked out with 'em.

A GOBOT?! Christ, why not admit to a complete Turbo Teen Series 1 or Happy Days In Space while you're at it?

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

hu? what are you on about?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

TURBO TEEN!

"Next time, steal an Optimus Prime. Hell, steal a Bumblebee. Just think bigger!"

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Not since I was 13 or 14. The biggest thing I ever lifted was A TENNIS RACQUET. Jaysus, I still can't believe I actually did that.

rener (rener), Friday, 15 April 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

A copy of The Sun in 6th form. Our sociology teacher told us all to buy one, and something else that I forget, so we could compare, and no bloody way was I buying The Sun.

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Friday, 15 April 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Is stealing donuts from a canteen shoplifting or a, ahem, "dine and ditch"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 15 April 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

A Modula-2 textbook, when I was at Uni, 12(ish) years ago.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 15 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I worked at a music shop in New York for years. When I was younger I probably "acquired" over $2,000 worth of gear from there. The list includes

1. Yamaha wx5 midi wind controller
2. About 5 replacement faders for dj mixers
3. numerous cymbals

Not sure if this is really shoplifting though, I would take the cymbals and tape them to the inside of a drumhead of the same diameter, then put them both back in the box, amd pay for the 14$ drumhead with the $300.00 cymbal in it. Upon further review, that was in fact shoplifting, but I was on a horrible share cropper-esque comission deal, and it was impossible to make any money. They were also abosolute tyrants there, so every time I was yelled at I would take something, I saw it as my own little way of pushing the Karmic pendulum back in my direction, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

More recently I stole a TRS to 1/4" cable, a 20$ value.

gaetano, Sunday, 17 April 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, my brother worked in a music shop too and they all lifted stuff all the time. It seems to be the norm.

I used to shoplift books (used to=probably did it three or four times) from a major bookshop in the middle of Dublin. The shop was on several floors, so there was nothing to stop you from picking up a book on one floor, bringing it up to another, much quieter floor, and putting it in your bag. This was when I was about 13.

The last thing I shoplifted was a jar of tarragon. It was in the bottom of my trolley and I forgot about it when I went to pay.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

the last thing I shoplifted was Raising Hell, Tougher Than Leather and The Bestiality Of The Bonzo Dog (Doo-Dah) Band, while shopping for a Year 12 formal dress with my then girlfriend. She congratulated me gleefully.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 18 April 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

this morning! i went and photocopied my academic record in the post office and then the post office guy refused to certify the copies (there were 12) as he 'didn't have time' (had to drag himself away from his cup of tea with the counter chick). i left in a huff without paying for the photocopies. can you shoplift a photocopy? hmmmm

gem (trisk), Monday, 18 April 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

Packet of Frisk mints last night, while paying for a Slurpee. AINT NO SUCH THINGS AS HALFWAY CROOX

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 18 April 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

I have never ever shoplifted.

Am I weird?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 18 April 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

yes.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 18 April 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah. i stole as an employee of b00ks-a-m1ll1on. or if not stealing outright, i'd put dollar stickers on what i wanted and then get the employee discount on top of that.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

some shorts from kohl's a year or two ago. i'll only ever steal clothes nowadays. it's not my fault all stores don't pay people to keep track of how many items i went into the changing room with.

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 18 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Packet of Frisk mints last night, while paying for a Slurpee.

That is by far one of the best ways to do it, stealing while also purchasing something.

I remember learning how to do that trick with older soda/snack machines where you insert a dollar w/ tape attached to it to pull it back out. You could feed yourself for free and then you could hit the return change button and get paid in quarters... like a slot machine where you always win!

Amon (eman), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

i was a teen on acid with my girlfriend. we became enranced by the meat display in the butchers but decided it was too difficult so she dragged my up the escalator and made me run decoy while she nabbed an armful of dresses from the ladeez dept.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

A couple of days ago, I was at the self-checkout at the grocery store, and I charged myself for regular broccoli, even though I really had broccoli rabe.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

I used to shoplift large amounts, blatantly- when i was young enough to have a paper route i would walk into stores with the stupid paper bag with neon-orange strap, empty- and walk out with it, full- how did this never get caught, wtf! Mostly books, sometimes groceries. Got caught once when i was 18, while wandering around a 24-hr grocery store at 3am, stuffing my face & pockets. This year i did it a few times for stuff to sell for food & gas money- when i was desperately broke- but at the present time I don't think I'll ever shoplift again. Well, only if it's from a really shitty wage slave job. Then I'll be happy to. But I think i can avoid that situation from now on.

Me too!

supercub, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

about 9 months ago I went to a sainsbury's after a club FT, I was drunk and for some reason thought it was a great idea to walk around eating a banana i just took from the fruit stand. nobody cared :(

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

when i was 13 i bought a copy of the Gamesmaster magazine, when I got home i discovered there was a copy of some porno mag hidden inside! i guess that counts as inadvertent shoplifting.

Yes, I did get several good wanks out of that.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

about 15 years ago, a packet of skittles i think it was. i hated myself.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

ken c, that's outrageous.

x-post - the banana, not the stolen wanks.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

I never ever shoplift. I manage a shop so it'd be really strange to steal from another shop knowing how much taxes/costs they have to pay to survive. (So why do I download? is a question I ask myself a LOT.)

My mother accidently took some toilet paper (or diapers?) from a supermarket. She was eight months pregnant (with me) at the time. They took her into a room harassing her for hours saying she was a thief blablabla. It was non-intentional stealing as she didn't realize she hadn't shown it to the cashier. My dad, out of revenge, stole cigarets for weeks and weeks in that supermarket.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've ever shoplifted, maybe sweets and stuff as a child. But beyond that no.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh when I worked in a shop I robbed thousands of cigarettes and food and whatever I wanted basically.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

cathy, i was terrible that night. i even contemplated putting the banana skin back onto the fruit stand when i had finished with it, but morality finally got hold of me and I refrained.
