Where I might be stuck living if I can't find work soon: Oakville, Ontario. I mean, just look at the name!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Probably one of these cities named for a famous Euro city, but pronounced all wrong. Like ver-SALES or PAR-is, KY. Or maybe AY-thens, TN.

Any of the suburbs of Chicago are, like, the most stereotypical SUBURBS anywhere.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Schaumburg is the worst because it's famous for the giant mall. My work is sponsoring a trip there to go shopping. I laughed.

Canyon Country, CA, the whole Santa Clarita Valley actually.

my mom would go on road trips with other ladies(coworkers at her school, bowling league, etc) to the Mall of America.

They were going from Flint, MI, around Lake Michigan, to the Twin Cities.

how obvious is it that they photoshopped all the cars out of that pic?

Highlands Ranch, CO

That pic is from an interesting web page:
http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/environment/so_no_place_to_live_is_really_ok.htm It suggests the layout below as more environmentally friendly. To me, it looks bizarre. For one thing, I can't see the street that goes in to the center.

Plano, Texas, is the Most Suburban Place on Earth:

[A]fter rejecting several names for the budding town (including naming it in honor of then-President Millard Fillmore), the locals suggested the name "Plano," which they incorrectly believed to be the Spanish word for "plain," a reference to the terrain of the area (the actual word for plain in the Spanish language is "llano"). The name was accepted by the Post Office and Plano was born.

Cairo (CAY-ro), Georgia isn't suburban! Nor is Havana (which is mistakenly pronounced "Hey Vanna!" by ignorant hicks as if they were surprised to see Ms. White on Wheel of Fortune), Florida!

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Cary, NC

-- Jeff-PTTL

OTMFM.

After World War II, Raleigh began to grow and people began to look to surrounding communities to get away from the "big city" life. Cary became an attractive spot to relocate and the development of Research Triangle Park in the 1950s greatly influenced the town's growth. Each year Cary's boundaries stretched towards RTP. Eventually, RTP affected Cary's growth more than its planned targeted cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. RTP brought in industry giants like IBM and accompanying employees causing the population to double in the 1950s and 1960s.

With such growth, the amount of developed land had to be increased. People needed a place to live. MacGregor Downs was created in the 1960s and flourished. It was the first of many developments to be constructed around Cary over the following 25 years. [...] The 90s brought further residential growth in areas like Barrington, Regency Estates and Wessex and Cary Glen in 2001. As developments flourished, so did Cary's growth. Since 1970 Cary has grown from 7,640 to over 110,000 and is now North Carolina's sixth largest city.

Today, Cary is one of the largest towns in the nation, but growth has begun to slow somewhat. Even the most well planned communities need a chance to step back, take a breath and see what they have become. The town is encompassed by a more than 45-square-mile boundary and continues to grow westward at a steady pace. Cary's location in the Triangle Region has undoubtedly been a great stimulus in the growth and popularity of the town.
