Bass Player seeks others to make loud indie/punk rock noises.

I'm looking to find a like-minded group of folks who give a fuck about music and who're up for putting on a good show, preferably without a massive amount of substance-abuse problems tagging along.

As an intro, I'm 28, live in NE Portland, have a car & a officey dayjob, so I'm available on nights & weekends for rehearsal.

Most of my music influences/faves are bands like Husker Du, the
Replacements, New Order/Joy Division, Ride, MBV, Slowdive, Jesus &
Mary Chain, early Dinosaur Jr, MC5, the Stooges, Modern Lovers, the
Who, Cheap Trick, the Wipers, Superchunk, Big Black, Wire, Spacemen 3,
Spiritualized, Mission of Burma, the Kinks

Mainly indie rock/post-punk/shoegazer(post-hardcore?), in other words.
Think SST/Homestead/SubPop/Merge/Dionysus/Sire/Creation/4AD/Twin/Tone.

Peter Hook & Greg Norton are my Bass Gods.

Drop a line if yer interested. Wanna make an attempt at Dino Jr's "Raisins"?

this is in or around NE Portland

i keep forgetting you're in portland. if i was still there i'd totally start a band with you... but no dinosaur jr. covers.

nothing so egregious yet. altho, if you peruse the other musician/bass player ads, you'll see a distressing preponderance of the word "Groove".

Kingfish, you forgot to write:
"backing vox a +, long hair a must"

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 16 April 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

NO BIG HAIR

so far, got 8 responses. met up with one guy for coffee, wound up jamming out wiht him & his drummer in their practice space in a storage locker. they REALLY like nirvana, so we were able to do a passable version of "territorial pissings". after mucking about for a bit, we wound up doing a great jam on Neil Young's "Keep On Rockin' in a Free World".

they're nice guys, really suburban. however, it would help if their practice space wasn't a half-hour drive...

on to the next email...

jesus christ, how can you form a band when NONE of you play any cover songs together. there's like 2 semi-cool bands where they knew none, NO covers whatsoever. okay, the band on wednesday knew like 2 Elliot Smith songs, but thats it!

also, results of audition #4:

Hey Jeremy,

Thanks for coming out on Sunday. At this time we will be continuing our search for some more players but thanks again for your time and good look.

aw damn. guess that means i won't be joining your "project".

kingfish, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

i was totally down on covers when we first started out. i felt like we had to establish ourselves first before we did too many covers. especially since some of my bandmates' attitude was "but the audience would have more fun if we played such-and-such belle & sebastian song!" now that we've been around for a couple years and people know we're the real deal, i'm definitely more into the idea.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

it's not so much using them as part of your act(which i consider a separate issue), but more of just as a fun thing for the band to all get drunk & jam out on, for example.

altho, with the guys on saturday, we did do "Surrender", which marked the first time i've ever played that song with anybody other than my brother.

kingfish, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

and for some reason, i'm now reminded of how Frank Zappa used to kick people out of his band(s) if they didn't know "Louie Louie"...

kingfish, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah. jamming. i remember that.

we're not really a jamming sort of band.

though there was a time a few months ago when we did try our hand at "eye of the tiger" and "everybody wants to rule the world" and "never tear us apart," all just made up on the spot, and a couple of them worked surprisingly well!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

(can you tell that a love of big 80s pop hits is one of the things that binds us? it's not always easy with six people in your band.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

well, not really jamming per se, in terms of "jam band," but more like "drink beer and play the dead boys real loud" etc.

"never tear us apart,"

hee hee. this might be entertaining.

kingfish, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

i know you didn't mean jam band.

but i mean the way our band operates doesn't really lend itself to drinking beer and jamming in the way you mention. for a variety of reasons i guess, not least of which is that a couple of my bandmates (okay, it's the girls) aren't really interested in doing that sort of thing.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I want a band called Thomas the Panzer Tank Engine.

Ian Riese-Moraine has a grenade, that pineapple's not just a toy! (Eastern Mantr, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

okay, it's the girls) aren't really interested in doing that sort of thing.

too bad. bands full of beer-drinkin' girls are fun.

kingfish, Monday, 25 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

oh, they do like drinking beer, all right. but they are also classically trained on violin and piano, and they never really learned how to jam while growing up. i know, very sad.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
What's up?
I'm the drummer in a band locally called Thr0wb4ck, and planning to replace our lead guitarist & bassist soon, our genre's don't match 100% but if you're interested, email me and we'll go from there. We play 80's style hard rock/metal and just starting on our original stuff. We have a 45min Cover set that we're keeping around for misc. shows and some county fair shows this summer. We sound similar to Great White, nothing super fancy- just hard, loud & solid.

I'm 32, our singer's 30 & our rhythm guitarist is 25. Let me know!

I'm gunna respond and ask what comprises their "45min Cover set"

another response:

Hey man whats goin on? I saw your ad. Are you still looking for a band? Well I play the drums been playing for awhile and the memeber plays the guitiar we are looking for bass player. Our influences are killswitch engage, flaw, sevendust, shadows fall, dry kill logic, etc. we are pretty heavy but we want to be melodic to. we both have jobs, and transportation, and we both do not do drugs at all. So if you are interested please email me back. We are also i need of a singer that can scream and sing.
Thanks

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Move to Boise and I'll start a band with you. But only if you can explain the Pixies to me. Or not.

saltbox and a rubber ball (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

No thanks. Idaho's a bit too rustic for my refined urban sensibilities.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Your answer is understandable, but "play 80's style hard rock/metal" and "killswitch engage, flaw, sevendust, shadows fall, dry kill logic, etc."
does not hold much promise, does it?
