Because I am thinking of growing my hair down to my ass so I can wear a french braid every day.

Hi Mandee, French braids aren't only gorgeous, they look tidy as well. Believe it or not, I used to wear one. :) I liked it a lot. Gale

Can you please describe French braids?

maryann, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I associate French braids with the eighties or blond farmer's daughters. French braids are the kind where you start plaiting the hair way at the top of your head, and all the hair is pulled into a braid along the back, instead of the more familiar way, where the braid starts along the ears or nape. You know, like Pippi Longstocking.

I grew my hair long so that I could wear braids, and now that it is long, braids are a pain in the ass. Maybe I should get the Braidini.

Maryann, here . Yuk.

I guess the number one reason I hate them is that there is this Swedish restaurant in Door County, Wisconsin called Al Johnson's. Well, old Al must have a thing for big strapping Northern European valkyrie-types because all of the waitresses are young, six feet tall, weigh about 180 lbs., have straight, french-braided hair, and attractive without being beautiful. I'd been going there since I was a kid, but I didn't notice this until I was an adult, and when I did, it really creeped me out. And they have always looked this way . He is a celebrity in Wisconsin, but I always think of him now as the pancake masochist - I bet he fantasizes about those women stepping on him with their clogs.

Here he is, the Pancake Nazi, er, I mean restaurateur, and his french-braided women.

Oh, we call them French plaits in New Zealand. It feels nice when someone is plaiting your hair that way, but the results are hideous, I admit.

maryann, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about that halo? I wonder what my pals would think if I turned up with that hairstyle? I want to do it so bad!

maryann, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ew that Al guy! And he tries to get girls who look like 'traditional Swedes' - you can see it just from the photo! Idiotic! What do the customers think, I wonder?

maryann, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, you have to order a video to learn the secrets of the halo.

I do that twistie thing with my hair quite often because it's dead easy and way faster than a regular braid. Instructions in four easy steps.

1) Sweep hair back tightly into an elastic
2) Divide into two equal sections
3) Separately twist both sections counter-clockwise until they are round (like a rope) but not too tight
4) Twist the two sections around each other clock-wise and secure
If you did it right, it'll stay put.

I love the twisty thing - I only sussed it out a couple of months ago. French braids are a bit wrong I think, only seen on bogans around here. I like normal plaits. The herring-bone plait is cool too but once again only worn by bogans.

I grew my hair long just so I could have a long plait down the back, then I discovered it didn't suit my without a fringe so I cut a fringe. That was a couple of years ago. Now I have no fringe but for some reason it does suit me. I don't know if my face has changed or just the way I perceive it. Now I prefer it in two pigtails tied low, behind the ears - or all tied up on top.

Ooh! I just looked at the rest of that page. I love the braided headband, and the halo. I wish I had some female friends so they could do that to my hair for me (and no, I don't think men can learn how to braid - they don't understand about tension).

toraneko, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's rubbish, I can braid reasnobly well.

Ed, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to go and see the goats , i think that is perhaps the funniest thing i have ever heard , goats falling off the roof.

anthonyeaston, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed - do your braids have the correct tension?

maryann, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I cannot braid my hari but I can achieve the correct tension wiht other peoples

Ed, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Mandee :) I'm gonna cry cos my hair is short :( The french braids have just so many beautiful styles!

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i understand about tension - but you will have to wait for my next post to see how and why...
