Gulf of Mexico, C/D?

I've been having an urge to go down there the past several days (it'd take thirty minutes to get there by driving, but I don't drive, so it'd probably take me six hours to walk there).

-It's a pretty much a gigantic pond except during the occasional tropical system or bad ass cold front
-Some nice beaches on its shore
-Feels like bathwater in summer but does get pretty chilly in winter
-Some arms of it are so shallow that the southern extremity of my city would turn into beachfront property if a Category 4 or 5 hurricane smashed through...and we're 30 miles inland!
-Every summer a dead zone from pollution spreads in front of the coasts of Louisiana and East Texas that depletes the water of decent oxygen
-Fisherman's paradise everywhere else
-Not really prone to earthquakes or tsunamis
-Makes weather in the United States pretty quirky

Classic, methinks.

Classic indeed. What chunk of the coast are you near? Everywhere near New Orleans (Biloxi, basically) is fucking nasty.

It's nice for a quick excursion. No Southern California but if it's near, why not? Can you not take a greyhound or something?

Was this inspired by that "Pink Houses" thread?

The Florida Panhandle. The nearest beaches are rather grey, but 45 miles further to the west, ahh...

Nah, they don't head down that way because it's all really tiny insignificant out-of-the-way towns on the coast of this region.

Was this inspired by that "Pink Houses" thread?
Haha! Good call, yes, it partially is.

Why is the Florida Panhandle called the Florida Panhandle when the rest of the state doesn't actually resemble a pan in any way?

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 16 April 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

It's the name given to any section of state where it sticks out a way from the rest of the state, there's the Texas panhandle too iirc (Americans prove me wrong here)

Porkpie's right. Oklahoma also has a panhandle.

So does SAN FRANCISCO!

No, that's just where you scrounge for change by playing your acoustic busker covers of Roll Deep songs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 April 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

IF Roll Deep release the record I fear they're about to, they might end up being the ones busking their own songs!

Or something!

Florida resembles a very deep pan with a rounded bottom or a deep frying basket.

Don't forget Alaska. Did that come from Russia, or did you guys swipe it from Canada somehow?

plebian plebs (plebian), Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

We bought it from Russia in 1867.

Oklahoma also has a panhandle.

Home of the best university name, Panhandle State.

I mean, just look at those pictures on the homepage. My, they're having such a good time.
