I applied to be a game tester for TEH NEW RATCHET & CLANK at Sony this week, but because they are way out in Foster City and the test starts at 4:00 AND I won't have a car...I can't make it!!!!!

SO gutted. And I would have been paid!

Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Saturday, 16 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I cannot quite bring myself to email them and tell them I can't do it!

Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Saturday, 16 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

FIND A WAY.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 16 April 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I have applied the full brunt of my logistical knowhow to this situation, THERE IS NO WAY! :(

Start walking right now.

I told you to make a friend.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 16 April 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

aww man that sucks!! i LOOOOOVE ratchet & clank!!

i almost applied for a job as a videogame tester at the place that makes the prince of persia games which is right down my street! like 4 blocks away! but i knew that it would ultimately be a very bad idea.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 16 April 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Ubisoft? My ex worked as a tester @ the Montreal Ubi for a while.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 17 April 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

He hated it, actually.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 17 April 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

that's the one! why did he hate it--the nature of the job or the nature of the company or both?

they're starting this big VIDEO GAME SCHOOL here!

(where you go to learn to make video games, not play them, obviously)

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

(although that gives me an idea... i could offer a course on "surviving super mario world: tips and tricks")

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

(also in video game school do they call the professors BOSSES?)

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I have been accepted to playtest a SECRET FIRST PERSON SHOOTER ACTION PROJECT next weekend! Wooo!

Hand Shapes (nordicskilla), Saturday, 2 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Thank God someone is finally inventing a video game where you can use guns to shoot people.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 2 July 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Thank God someone is finally putting words together to express opinions.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 2 July 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

i thought this thread was an apropos victory shout of some sort.

(Sorry, but the idea of testing video games just fills me with dread dread dread. It's not like playing video games... AT ALL)

donut e- (donut), Saturday, 2 July 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, what is it like?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 2 July 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

it's like data entry, except sometimes the data you want to enter won't be available because you can't reproduce the problem you had with the game the last time, and then the developers get mad at you.

(I've never been a video game tester, but I've been on the developer side, and there is often the "SHIT! THERE MIGHT BE A BUG AND YOU CAN'T REPRO IT?" angst that comes screaming to their end... understandeably.. but just sayin' that video game Q&A isn't what it's cracked out to be.. well, you might require crack to enjoy it, though. you fill out data forms all day, and it gets repetitive.)

donut e- (donut), Saturday, 2 July 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

i tested socom/ps2online for free. the good part is the free games and equipment, the bad part is being told when you have to play.

Point taken, Michael.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 2 July 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, I get paid too. And I need the money. Sorry if I ruined any of your evenings.

Hand Shapes (nordicskilla), Saturday, 2 July 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Aww. Shooty shooty shoot!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 2 July 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

I am just jealous, Hand Shapes Skilla. It must be pretty fun, in spite of the possible reality of donut's tales of rampaging programmers.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 2 July 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

do you get free t-shirts, at least? can you send some to us? can you at least send one to the guy who sold you those great ps2 games?

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 2 July 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

haha, rampaging = "are you sure you weren't high when filed bug #A457?" emails, at worst. Then again, I've worked for apparently saner programming houses.. I've heard horror stories from the EA run sweatshops, though.

donut e- (donut), Saturday, 2 July 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

I did it! And it was AWESUM!

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I played the still-in-development next installment of a fairly well known mid-level stealth/first-person action franchise.

xp-kingfish, I didn't get any free stuff. sorry! :(

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

This means you could probably beat Turtle. He loses to beta-testers.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

boooooooo!

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

did it pay well?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

$100 for three hours. Not bad really, when you consider it!

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Was this a one-time thing or will you get to do it again?

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

This sounds fun! I just started playing Rachet & Clank: Going Commando again from the beginning, because I enjoyed it so much the first time.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

i love ratchet & clank so much!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

being paid $100 to play video games for 3 hours seems pretty can't-lose!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

let plae

i am a videogame tester now! full time! 40 hrs a week! w/ benefits!

huell howser (chaki), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

nice. Though only thing that did get tiring was having to play the same level again and again without being able to get up and make some tea and have a break. The multiplayer test was SWEET though. I played a terrorist leader and I took potshots at the other participants with a heatseeking rifle from atop an abandoned warehouse.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I kept getting murdered by enemy snipers

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

THQ

huell howser (chaki), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I also realized that there is this whole world of people who bitch about control systems and which weapon to use in which room, etc.

Some of these guys were obvious old-timers who scan craigslist and frequent the tests like vampires. They didn't even need nametags.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

THQ

neat. any particular division, or just any game on any console?
