I feel different when I wear earrings

I realised this today, as I put in a pair of little sapphire cluster studs. Whenever I wear earrings at work, I'm all sort of professional and super-efficient. When I don't bother wearing any, I feel less in control and have muddled thinking. Other jewellery doesn't have this effect on me at all.

Do you feel differently about yourself/behave differently/have more confidence/whatever when you wear certain items of clothing or accessories? Do you have 'lucky underpants' or anything? or am I just mental?

When I feel earrings I feel like I'm more "radical". I know it's kinda silly, 'cause earrings on guys are not that shocking anymore, but they've certainly become a part of my identity. Without them I feel naked.

Most of my earrings are rather long. I end up tossing my head around like a starlette in an Italian B-movie.

when i wear earrings with backs they pinch my earlobes and i have to take them off. :-(

I like wearing long, danglefontaine earrings. They make me feel glamourous and remind me to keep my head up and my hair down. If I put them on, I feel special, so it's like my idea of dressing up.

Earrings and eyeshadow make me feel like a girl, rather than a genderless ugly creature. And sparkly ones distract me in mirrors.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

maybe i'll try wearing some today.

brody the country girl dalle (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I am totally comfortable being a genderless creature! My ta-tas help allay any confusion.

That said, I don't have pierced ears (or pierced anything else). Sometimes I think about getting them done, because I have short hair and I think it might look nice with some nice, long earrings. But then I realize I infrequently wear the jewelry I already have, and I probably would give up on the dangly ones a week or so after I started buying them. Hence, too much work.

In part I guess wearing earring makes me feel more "girly" but in a way it's more about decoration/adornment, that extra minute or two it takes to put on earrings and/or makeup for me signifies more care of self (some days, of course, exercising or reading a book or whatever can do this though). Hence earrings and makeup "picking me up" when I'm feeling bleah. Also, I like shiny things. And sparkly = good too.

I don't wear earrings any more. For a while there, collecting them was a bit of an obsession for me. I feel weird wearing earrings with my glasses, like it's just too much. Also, I hate it when I want to rest my head and they poke into my head. Ow!

I feel different when I wear a cock ring.

There was a woman on the train last night whose sex I probably wouldn't have been able to detect without her earrings. She wasn't androgynous in that roly-poly "are those boobs or just chub?" way -- she was actually very sleek-looking, but with very short hair and prominent cheekbones and jawline. As soon as I spotted the earrings, though, everything else made sense.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

What rrrobyn said. Almost exactly. Except I keep forgetting that these things make me feel better, so I never bother, which means it's an extra nice surprise when I make an effort (and yes, putting in earrings constitutes "an effort") and I feel super-cheered-up and a zillion times better about myself. Though not enough to do it every day.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

i feel "different" but i think it's just the heels and makeup.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I haven't worn earrings in years, I doubt I could even wear them anymore. They just seem like more trouble than they are worth.

It was too uncomfortable to wear earrings and headphones at the same time so I stopped wearing earrings like 10 years ago and I expect my piercings closed. I bet I've saved a bunch of money not buying earrings though!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I feel like (and most times act like) a total drag queen when I get dressed up. Against all odds, I entertain myself.

Can't even remember what happened to mine!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I feel naked if I leave the house without earrings or mascara. Maybe I am too attached...to things?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

The right shoes more than anything else will affect how I feel and how I get through the day.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

this is all very amusing to me because last night i decided to get my ears pierced again. i mean, i used to have them pierced, but they closed up and now i'm ready to try again. because i get a bit envious of all you dangly earring wearers.
also, i have a secret plan.
