What are those handles above the doors on the inside of cars for?

I've always wondered, and I can't work it out. I can understand the ones on the back doors, sicne people hang suits are that there, but in the front seats? ANyone have any ideas?

If you're riding in a New York cab, holding on to that thing can keep you from sliding away from the door into the crease on the middle, as sometimes those back seats are pretty much V-shaped.
