Dan, congratulations! Fantastic news! When do you start? What are you doing? Do they need a kids TV development exec?

Mark C, Friday, 7 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(or i will continue a my chico marx impression)

mark s, Friday, 7 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alas, Steelpoint deals with neither steel nor points, Mark, so I have to leave you hanging.

The company is a content management firm who has developed a software product called Introspect which is used to manage legal briefs. I'm going to be a senior engineer, which basically means HARDCORE CODE JOCKEY! I don't think anyone woud report to me, and I'll be reporting directly to the head of technology. I'm just a tiny bit excited about this.

When I go out in a bit I will do all my drinking in your honor!

I think that explains my getting a bit tipsy last night. Yes, it was all for Dan!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

("i would like a single plum, floating in a bed of perfume, served in a mans hat.")

Ask some of the board members, they've seen it. ;-)

two years pass...
So I took a job offer about three weeks ago for a contract job that doesn't start until the middle of November. However, since then I ahve interviewed with an old employer for another job, a better, permanent job - it's right downtown SF, it pays better, it has great benefits, and the people are charming and relaxed. I did not tell them that I had already accepted another job because I wanted to work for them very badly and I wanted to see what they were offering.

Tired of waiting, I called their bluff and told them that I had another offer but that they were my first choice. They came back pretty quickly and offered me the job and I accepted. I am now in the odd position of having accepted two job offers, but I need to let the first one go.

So what do I tell them? I haven't signed anything, only accepted by email. And as far as I know, the contract is at will and temporary anyway. If I told them today, I would still be giving them three weeks notice, I just want to do it in the most professional manner possible.

I will also have to tell my current employers, who agreed to extend my notice period to mid-November, that I will now be leaving the middle of next week. I don't know how I always do this to myself.

Maybe it's greed and ambition.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Why don't you simply tell them the truth. Three weeks is more than you would need to be professional about it and giving up a steady job with benefits would be demented.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It would, wouldn't it? (I got yr email, btw!)

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically it is the difference between being insured ( I have a stomach condition), getting vacation (so i can visit my folks) and having a permanent job or having NONE of those things.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Do it. You don't owe the contract job any more than what you're proposing doing and you owe to you and mrs. adam medical insurance and trips back to Blighty.

(That e-mail was composed in the haze of extreme temulence. I'm not sure I even remember what I asked you.)

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(you asked for KILLER JAMS and you mentioned Nina Simone! It was good)

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, it's coming back to me now.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i was in this position a couple of months ago. it feels terrible, but as long as you're upfront and expeditious in dealing with it, there's nothing employer #1 can really say.

congrats adam!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you! I'm going to be downtown again! Whoo!

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And only two more days at this fucking job, thank goodness.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, adam., 3 weeks is more notice than you need to give a job where you are already working.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Call me when you're all set up. We could perhaps lunch together.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes!

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)
