Spontanious eye problem

My friend Jessica has just had a really weird probloem with here right eye. It's come on all of a sudden - no problem with eyes before. Out of her right eye, she gets double vision on the right side of her right eye (as it were) and almost centrally she's can't see anything.

She doesn't seem to concerned, but I'd be really worried. Anyone know what it might be? As I say, it's just come up randomly in the last half hour or so.

Hell yeah I'd be worried! It could be a stroke or somethin!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Um not that I mean to worry you. But that does sound pretty nasty.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

I know, that's what I told her. She's only 19 - she won't get a stroke, will she?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Yes, they can happen at a young age - I know personally 3 people in their 20s who have had one, not even smokers. :/

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

I mean Im sure its nothin but she should go check it out - NOW!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear - I dunno if I should tell her this now, or wait, or what. I don't wanna worry her - or maybe worrying is the best thing? Ah!

Check it out how?

Go see a GP or hospital I guess? Im sorry I really am no expert here, dont take my word on this, but it does sound odd.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

HAHAH mark *hem sorry*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

She could indeed have a stroke, or some other stuff could be impinging on her optic nerves (I am not a doctor, I just type their radiological reports) or summat. She probably needs to get a head scan, anyway - to the doctor or casualty department?

Detached retina? Are you in London? If so, Moorfields now.

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

My old boss had a stroke/aneurism a few years ago, she was mid 20s. She just suddenly went numb all down one side and couldnt see properly. shes ok now but she had to get surgery. It all comes on pretty fast, you have to act quickly.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha indeed - she's just gone outside for fag, and to see if not gazing at a monitor might clear her eyes up.

Do these things clear up by themselves? Either way, I'll tell her to get to the GP, or hospital if it dsoesn't clear up. Is that the way forward?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

My boyfriend stopped smoking for a few days then had a fag - after the first draw his eyesight went blurry and he had double vision for a few minutes. We convinced ourselves it was something to do with the nicotine rush - it went away and hasn't come back since.

Rumpie, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, she's come back from having a smoke, and she tells me it's cleared up, so it's all good. I told her to watch out tho.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

This sounds more serious than the strain of looking at a monitor, most of which are much more user friendly than they used to be. Basically get her to a gp asap, it may be a symptom of some deeper malaise.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Yep, vision problems, you want to see an ophthalmologist or neurologist stat. Don't bugger about with yr eyes, they're important.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that sounds very strange indeed. Unlikely that it could be a stroke, could be eye strain or eye pressure or whathaveyou, but your eyes are nothing to f*ck about with. If it clears after a few minutes, it's probably not serious, but if it doesn't clear, or if it repeats, then it's worth getting it checked out.

Twice in the past few months, I've had these sort of glowing "snakes" across my vision that are like afterimages that don't clear away for a few hours. No idea what that's about. Blurry, double or greyed vision has only ever been a side effect of medication.

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

johnney, any other symptoms? my sister (who posts on here as gunther heartymeal), had something called pseudo tumor cerebri that fucks up your vision. do a search for her name and you'll see her story.

anyhow it largely affects young women.

My gf once suddenly got double vision and other weird disturbances on one side of her field of vision. We're both mild hypochondriacs so we leapt to all kinds of scary conclusions, left dinner half-cooked on the stove, and headed for the ER -- where it turned out to be nothing more than the start of a migraine.

the krza (krza), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't seem to be no, apart from a headache after it cleared up.

Start of a migraine might be the answer - I hope for her sake it is.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

(Obviously I didn't mean to imply she shouldn't have it checked out -- just to put things in perspective.)

the krza (krza), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

She's only 19 - she won't get a stroke, will she?

Our neighbour's son (about 13 yrs old) is in the hospital with heart problems. :-( Anyway, I'd check it out. I mean, if it's nothing, hurray, and it IS something serious, they can solve it.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

It sounds like the visual disturbance that often comes before a migraine. As everyone has said, she should get it checked out though.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Migraines can also be symptoms of problems like aneurysms, so you can't really let it rest there.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I would definitely have her get an MRI or some tests run, my stepbrother was having vision problems and then one day he fainted and they discovered blood clots behind his eyes and nasel cavity at age 20. (He's okay now)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

migraines can be preceded by visual auras, and your description fits that pattern reasonably well. having stroke-like symptoms at age 19 is possible, but very rare.

people often describe visual blurring as "double vision", but that's not usually a sign of stroke or anything sinister. true neurological double vision ("diplopia") requires both eyes to be open, and is caused by a disruption in coordination of the eye movements. someone having diplopia will see two fairly clear images, either side-by-side or top-and-bottom, with the separation more pronounced when looking off to one side than straight ahead. closing one eye makes the double image resolve.

your friend should still get this checked out if she's worried. and if she's bothered by the headaches the visual symptoms, there are treatments available for migraine, some of which even work.

...I've had these sort of glowing "snakes" across my vision ...

I get these too, and my doctors said they're solid bits inside the eye that float between the len and retina. They're colloquialy called "floaters" and you can google that for more info. Mine only last half an hour or so, and there's nothing that can be done for it. But when I first mentioned it the doc said it could be the beginning of a detached retina, which is more serious. The test for that is simple and painless.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

I get total double vision when I'm really stoned! It is the most annoying thing ever. I cannot, no matter how hard I concentrate, bring my 2 fields of vision together. I find myself sitting there watching TV with one eye shut :(

Anyway Johnney I hope yr friend is ok now! :)

That's really useful info. I thought I was going mad when it started happening. However, not so good on the detached retina thing - my mum had that happen to her and needed surgery. Eeep.

Oh, I've had double vision when stoned too - in fact, that was why I stopped getting stoned, because I didn't like it.
