It's responding to anything I do to it. Just sits there smugly. Anyone know any way of reseting the fucking thing?

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

search the apple knowledge base it's different for each model.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

turn the hold button on then of, then press play and menu together and hold them for a few seconds til the apple icon appears again.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's for 3G. Dunno about any other model, as Ed says. guess it differs.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

hit it with a hammer!

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Send it to me, i'll send it back if I get it working.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

in the time you took to post here, you could have searched apple's knowledge database.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

hey i was away frm my desk and unavailible for searching.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

cutty wasn't talking about you, Ed.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

isn't there a reset button? i seem to recall so...

cutty wasn't talking about you, Ed.

exactly, i was talking to uptoeleven. ed, i would not think it is your duty to search the knowledge base for this lazy person.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

This happened me, it wouldn't reset when I tried to reset it, however eventually it ran out of battery and the screen went blank, then I charged it and it was fine.

It'll probably be ok. they are really fiddly machines all the same.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Hold down the menu button and the select/center button (on older models) or the menu button and the play button (on newer models)

stephen morris (stephen morris), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Why the agression? I checked the apple knowledge base and it wasn't working at the time so thusly resorted to ILE.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

p.s. Thank you to all those who have actually added helpful comments.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Ed is apple's searchable database.

Tried all the various button pushings mentioned on the web. Funny thing is battery was just about out and I recharged it when this happened. I'm going to try the Ronan solution and hope that works.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

maybe the lock is stuck on. i had that when i ding'ed mine

ja (_ja_), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I read all about that and tried that. Doesn't seem to be the problem. I mean, the time doesn't change on mine. Did it on yours?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

mine froze up regularly and the batteries had to drain and be recharged every time. i ended up sending it in for repair, they just sent me a new one instead.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought they didn't work as well if you froze them.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

After battery discharged, I plugged it in and it came back on. At first there was a broken line across the display, but that seems to have gone away. It did have the right time though.

i started to get the click of death. i think i have a catastrophic drive failure on my hands -- totally not my fault. anyone else ever have this happen?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 12 February 2006 06:41 (twenty years ago)

it was freezing and i reset the software with ipod update and now itunes doesn't recognize it at all! + there is still the clicking.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 12 February 2006 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Sterling but I think that clicking is the death knell, the hard drive misfiring. It happened to me in December, but luckily I had ponied up for the AppleCare the month before so they gave me a new one.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Sunday, 12 February 2006 07:22 (twenty years ago)

clicking is def prob the sound of a constantly seeking hard drive head.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 12 February 2006 09:12 (twenty years ago)

I had clicking and then no itunes recognition and finally the "oh no yr ipod is totally fucked" icon. I found you can get a replacement hard drive for £100. Wondered if it was worth it. Idly hacked at the case with a screwdriver but couldn't open it. Gave up for a month or so. Then just recently I turned it on again for no particular reason - and it's fine! I am confused but relieved.

ledge (ledge), Sunday, 12 February 2006 10:50 (twenty years ago)

you can get applecare for less (60 quid or something) and they will just do a straight swap

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 12 February 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Mine was within warranty, but it had a dent in and I'm told they won't even consider repair or replacement if it looks like it's been dropped or otherwise abused.

ledge (ledge), Sunday, 12 February 2006 11:25 (twenty years ago)

my creatice zen does this once in a while too. freezing or crashing.
It's weird.

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Sunday, 12 February 2006 11:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah i figure i should sign up for applecare first and then do the swap -- cheaper than buying the repair outright, no? + i'll probably get a shiny video ipod now instead of my photo ipod!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 12 February 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I think they just give you the same one that you've already got.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Sunday, 12 February 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

mine (a mini) had a big dent in the side casing that made the top fascia bow outwards and ruined the lock, but when the battery started playing up, there was no issue, they replaced it without quibbling.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 12 February 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

RIP 40GB clickwheel who ran down to zero battery and won't recharge.

lemmy tristano (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

A battery replacement kit should run you about $30 + tax/postage, including the tools necessary to do it.

So my iPod doesn't seem to be charging. When connected to a computer (have tried several too), it works fine, though.

Suggestions?

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 13:18 (fifteen years ago)

My classic just plain sucks now. At least 4-5 times per day I have to do one of those hold down menu and the center button to revive it and about every 3rd or 4th song it freezes for like 5 or 6 seconds. So annoying.

I'd like to replace my nearly 5-year-old iPod but can't really justify it when it's still working just fine. Every time it takes a few seconds to warm up, I secretly hope that it's died. Maybe I should just start being careless about where I leave it.

This happens to my old nano sometimes - doing a hard reset should fix it (on a nano you hold the menu and center button down until it resets, don't know if it's the same for all iPods).

mine has just frozen mid-song (but it played the song out). holding down menu/centre had no effect. doesn't light up when i plug it in. WHAT IS HAPPENING/IS IT DEAD/HELP

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

i can still see the name of the song on the screen so the screen's not gone blank or anything, just frozen

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

that's happened to mine...keep trying to reboot it, and if that doesn't work, hopefully it'll be ok after it runs out of power.

adult music person (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

cool...that's a relief, as long as it's not dead. it's like 4 years old now but i don't particularly want to be replacing it.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

(also the usual resentment of things breaking for NO REASON)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

plug it in lex and hold home/power off it should boot into dfu mode.

huh, weird problem this time.

sound in headphones went really crackly and fuzzy then died yesterday. the song on the ipod carried on playing, there was just no sound. i assumed the headphones had died. today, it worked again, but only for about 20 minutes before the same thing happened. bought new headphones and...NO SOUND.

so i now presume it's the ipod at fault? maybe the headphone socket? i panicked that it had died but the song still plays, it turns on fine, just synced to itunes w/no problems. but what can i do about this? is there a quick-fix? is the problem something else entirely? helpfully i'm travelling for a few days as of tomorrow morning - couldn't it have chosen a better time to act up :(

maybe the headphone socket?

sounds like it (no pun intended)

off to the genius bar with you

Once Were Moderators (DG), Saturday, 17 September 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

got an appointment in a bit - initially feared i wouldn't get one at short notice but i was FIRM with them and made them find me one today

fingers crossed they can sort it then and there rather than take it away for a week, i'm fucked if i have to do the lib dem conference without it

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

if it's the 4 year old ipod you may be in a spot of bother

Once Were Moderators (DG), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

it is! i'm fine with buying another (thank christ for a good few months of work) but obv i don't wanna drop unnecessary £££ on it if it's fixable. i mean, everything else about it works fine so it's not like it's DIED completely.

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's just ime they're a bit random as to when they stop supporting their products, effing apple

Once Were Moderators (DG), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

oh god yeah, i live in fear w/r/t my actual macbook - warranty expired last year and as far as i can tell there's basically no insurance option once you're out of that? like, the apple insurance costs so much that if it dies i may as well just get a new computer.

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

what i hate about apple is that when their products work they're amazing but they stop working SO SUDDENLY - with all the old microsoft shit i used to have, the death was always kinda gradual and you were forewarned to an extent by the way it'd just start to creak. w/apple, it's...one minute working perfectly, then without doing anything to it BAM it's totally dead.

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

obviously at the most inconvenient time possible in every case - i am SURE technology operates w/malice aforethought and i shall not be convinced otherwise

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

yes even apple gear has secret contempt for the puny fleshpods

first time i dealt with them they wouldn't touch a 3 year old mac mini but the next year they would help with a 3 year old macbook, though that may have had something to do with the enormous bulging battery that was presumably about to explode. last mac i bought they gave me the education discount (plus voucher) and free applecare. dunno why, i'm not a student nor did i claim to be

Once Were Moderators (DG), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

ten months pass...

WHY, when i plug an ipod into my macbook LIKE I ALWAYS DO, would the "do not disconnect" warning flash up on the ipod but no application on the mac - itunes, last.fm - acknowledge that there's an ipod plugged in and show the symbol? why? why? why? why would it do that for no reason?
