OK, so let me get this straight. The new Pope was a member of the Hitler youth, hates homosexuals and thinks that abortion is the lowest of the low... and people are cheering this guy? WHAT THE FUCKI

Does this not make you worry about the leaders of the Western world? That Tony Blair and his ilk actually have nice things to say to this cretin? Why are people standing around wanting to catch a glimpse of what is nothing more than an elderly bigot?

This is fucking crazy.

And, one other thing, can he get into the States when he clearly has to tick yes on that little immigration slip that asks you about affiliation with the Nazi party?

NamC.., Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

there is a box for the nazi party on immigration slips!? Cool!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

i didn't know about the nazi youth thing! wow. well, it makes sense, the vatican has been helping nazis with money and passports for years. (this is just something i read in a couple novels that i like to spread around spuriously.)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Relax, he share your views he just takes them a bit further. Think of you as Uwe Boll and him as George Romero.

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't there some deal where the Vatican recieved a cut of Nazi taxes? I'll have to look that up.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

For stuff like this, don't even try to understand white people.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

From Wikipedia with as-unexcised 'typo': At the age of 78, he is the oldest nazi elected since Pope Clement XII in 1730, and is the first German pontiff since Adrian VI (1522–1523)

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

dudes: like lots of little kids (preteenagers and such) were in the hitler youth, it was like the boy scouts if you were growing up in the mid 1930s to mid 1940s in certain parts of germany. i think sebald was in the hitler youth!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

i mean new pope sounds like a jerkoff but c'mon.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

haha the boy scouts hate homosexuals too!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

but yeah vatican obviously to great extent complicitous with nazi crimes, but i don't think herr ratzinger or whatever his name is can really be blamed for that, no more than the late john paul.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Maybe you should ask the Cardinals to vote again, for some cool liberal Nigerian or something.

andy --, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Agreed, it's a tenuous argument. "He's a Nazi!" No, he's not.

But! He wasn't affected by WWII the way John Paul II was, that's for sure, and I think that's why people keep pointing out the Hitler Youth thing.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

king sunny ade for pope!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I hear he's absolutely out of this world at Half-Life 2 deathmatch.

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

there's a LOT more to criticize ratzinger about than whether he was a nazi. he was a teenager in nazi germany during WWII, you were required to join hitler youth (whether or not you wanted to, or had any liking for the nazis). ratzinger apparently deserted from the german army -- that isn't exactly the action of a bonafide nazi.

please, get off this line of argument -- it hurts the credibility of anti-ratzinger people, esp. when there's MUCH stronger stuff to nail him on (e.g., the homophobia, his role in smashing liberation theology, his reactionary views on catholic theology).

can he really be "nailed"? he's just a fairly hard-line theologian. it's sort of a "you get what you pay for" thing, i think.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

xxpost

yeah, i can't imagine sending your kids to hitler youth was always "optional" if you can imagine....

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

am otm. there are loads of reasons to be scared of ratzinger, but this isn't the one that people should be jumping on. the hitler youth was basically compulsory by the second half of the 30s. get one history textbook, calum!

(xposts galore)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

let's focus on a story like this, and less on this bogus hitler-youth thing.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

let's hope this guy dies after three years as pope like all those popes from the 14th century

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

(i was sort of hoping the cardinals wouldn't reach a consensus and we'd have another great schism. oh well.)

White Smoke At The Vatican
Ratzinger becomes Pope

that's more than enough threads about the Pope. people need to be encouraged to use the search function and not just start new threads just so they can ensure their predictable opinion gets heard.

A friend of ours who used to work high up for a major supplier of precious jewels and fine ceramics to the Vatican told an extraordinary story to us the other night of being invited on a tour of the Vatican about fifteen years ago. They took her under the crypt to rooms barred from public view. There, in rooms covered in panels depicting sexual congress, mostly between men, they offered her wine served in a diamond, ruby and sapphire encrusted goblet. After that, an official asked her, would she care for some cocaine?

pope johnson is right. it's very clear the human population is dwindling to almost nothing, and this must be down to lack of procreation. absolute emergency, people.

If I looked as much like a bald Camilla Parker Bowles as Ratzy, I too would roll in bling to distract others from this notion.

Meat ROFL (suzy), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

This saving the world from homosexuality shtick. What was he trying to say actually? I saw this reported as 'homosexuality is evil' (as at Nick's link above), but elsewhere it was reported more as a bashing of gender relations theory. And his bashing of gender relations theory was rooted in his idea of emerging understandings of intrinsic physiological differences in (average) male and female neurocognitive systems, I think. But, if this is what he was saying, he would also have to pay attention to emerging understandings of the physiological basis of homosexuality...

I mean clearly he was confused about something, but what?
