Beeing seeing this person a few weeks and realizing I don't want to be in a relationship after all. Thought I'd feel different, but I don't. What to do? Yes we've done it, urgh.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Be simple, be direct, be honest.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

don't beat around the bush for hours and hours

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

(although it's really hard not to, i know)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Whatever you do, tell it to their face. A few weeks doesn't seem like that much in the long run, but A) it will be easier to communicate exactly how you feel this way, and B) it will help them have the proper feeling of "closure" that one doesn't get from phone/email/etc breakups.

Post-It note.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

when's the best time to add: she's an intern where I work and 12 years my junior?

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

a few weeks can seem either like nothing or like a really long time depending on how intimate (emotionally and otherwise) you got...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

can't you just ignore them until they go away on their own?

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

yikes!

double yikes!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Ignoring them is easy if you're a coward.
Like luna and Amateurist said, just get it over with - be honest - "welcome to dumpville - population: you."

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

ohh an intern. yikes indeed! is she liable to take the news well?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Gear, I have no idea.

Yeah, dumb, but it's not easy--I mean, impossible--to resist the advances of someone young and purdy.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Does she report to you? That could create all kinds of problems.

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I had a friend who asked me for advice one time regarding someone who worked under him and whether or not he should ask her out. I advised him to wait until the job was over. He nodded and agreed and the next night took her to dinner at Olive Garden and apparently said, "I've got a major crush on you" in the most awkward fashion imaginable from what I heard (one thing about him is he sweats when extremely nervous). She abruptly quit and moved on to another company.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

No, we do not work together in any capacity. And she's a perfectly great person. What can I say, I prefer being single.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend recently told me this story. When Clark Gable was making 'Mogambo' (or re-making it since he'd been in 'Red Dust' too) he started a little on-set romance with Grace Kelly who became quite attached to him, dropping hints about marriage and whatnot. So, one night, trying to make her understand that he was too old for her to consider as a husband, he stood up, told her he was tired and going to bed and deposited his dentures in his empty tumbler and left. She never said another word on the subject.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I think if the intern looked like Grace Kelly we might not be having this conversation?!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

That's probably true, Lara.

*hangs head*

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

have them get a good grip and pull

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

say "I break with thee, I break with thee, I break with thee" and throw dog poop on her shoes.

Steve Martin, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Give him/her $50 bucks. Say, "This is my gift to you. Now go." Leave it at that. No one can bitch when there's $50 bucks in their hand.

Rue McManahan, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Besides, she'll probably throw the $50 back at you and spit or scream, "I don't want your fuckin' money!" and stomp away in a huff. So it didn't even cost you $50!

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

In tribute to the most affected breakup in all of western culture, give her a pen.

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Kick them in the head and run away. Leave town if you have to.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

If you recall how the 'I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen' relationship worked out, though, if you give her a pen, your dad is going to jail, and you're going to England.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

With her.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

So give her a pencil instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

With an eraser on the end!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Perfect for stabbing you in the throat with. Do you people not think?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

give her a gummy pencil?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Can someone please explain the pen relationship thing? Thx.

miele kitty (miele), Thursday, 21 April 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

DOn't do what one of my friends did when trying to give the hint to a guy who was making "lets go out" noises and following her around so much she wanted him to go away: she made a Livejournal post, about him, without mentioning his name, or addressing him directly, and hoped he'd get the hint!

He didnt really of course, and so asked her was the comment about him, or a joke, and she replied (still on LJ here) "yes, leave me alone".

She's a good friend, but I've never seen such a pathetic way of dealing with someone before.
