non-christian cadets at US Air Force Academy get harassed by jesus freak cadets.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

first 2 paras of the linked article:

Less than two years after it was plunged into a rape scandal, the Air Force Academy is scrambling to address complaints that evangelical Christians wield so much influence at the school that anti-Semitism and other forms of religious harassment have become pervasive.

There have been 55 complaints of religious discrimination at the academy in the past four years, including cases in which a Jewish cadet was told the Holocaust was revenge for the death of Jesus and another was called a Christ killer by a fellow cadet.

but they'll let 'em rebuild Solomon's Temple, so of course they really love the jews!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

See, like my dad said, to heck with the Air Force!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

why does the idea of a young female jewish air force colonel sort of turn me on?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I kind of wish my brother was still alive so that a) I could ask him about this, and b) he could kick your ass.

At any rate, fuck you Tad.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

dan, i wasn't trying to insult your brother or you!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, well with the thinly-veiled Nazi reference you're doing a bang-up job of not offending anyone who might have any connection to the Air Force Academy.

You're not Alex in NYC so maybe it might be time try on a new schtick.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

colorado springs is the home of very many right-wing organizations.

makes me glad i wound up not going to the Academy in 1994... i was VERY close in choosing it.

kingfish, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

listen, my tone here is inflammatory -- but really, i don't find it defensible that folks at the US air force academy are using their faith as a shield for their anti-semitism. or to proselytize -- this is US property, after all, paid for w/ us tax dollars.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

that said -- i sincerely apologize if i offended you, dan.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

colorado springs is christian central, this is no surprise.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

my mom's friend's daughter is like a korean 5-foot-nothing air force captain!! she is bad ass. and her bf is this big hulking 6'4" white sex-monster also air force officer. i think shes presbyterian...

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

dan, seriously. i have a personal connection to the catholic church, should i say 'fuck you' every time anyone calls it greedy or every time ned says you should be pope?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

spurious nazi namechecking doesn't help anybody...

kingfish, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

If it offends you, then yes.

The Ghost of DUH (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Also, I realize it was kind of a throwaway mention and I'm not as candid about my personal life as much of the rest of ILE, but what part of "dead brother" was ambiguous in my first post, Haikunym?

Fuck you, too.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

This is pretty gross though. The Air Force Academy doesn't sound like a great place to be a non-Christian or female.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I am not disputing that. The article speaks for itself well enough without Tad making spurious Nazi connections that cast aspersions on members of my family.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Dan, fuck you right back, and I'm out of this thread, and ILE, for a while.

For the record, I realize that Tad crossed the line. I also think it's fair to say that if your brother was there right now a lot of this shit would NOT be happening, because from what you've said about him he would NOT allow this kind of thing.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

i offered my apology and i meant it with all sincerity. i'm not about to get all marcello-esque here, but i'm also not going to get into a pissing match about this either.

i'm outta here, too.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

A lot of people connected with various military institutions would NOT allow this kind of thing. That doesn't stop it from happening. Most frat boys aren't rapists. Most people in military academies are not racists. Most women are not shopping right now. I can understand why Dan is getting sick of the ILX "slander 'em all and let god sort it out" rhetoric (and I agree with you, Haikunym, about the Catholic thing, in theory at least--I don't think the Dan Pope picture offends me, it's just a joke but OTOH HORSE. DEAD. FLOGGING. etc and the regular level of bile on those threads is...interesting)

xpost

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah i don't think if someone posted a pic of curtis lemay with ned's head photoshopped in dan would cry foul.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Tad, when Dan teed off on you, you'd said nothing at all about Dan or about Dan's brother. Notice, I didn't say you'd said nothing disparaging about them. You'd said literally nothing about them at all.

Dan, please note the above. The Air Force Academy is not your brother. Your brother's honor is in no way impugned by Tad noting what other people (who are not your brother) do or say. The people in the article are not your brother. They must answer for their own conduct. Neither your brother nor you are involved. This is the simple truth. You may want to reconsider your emotional reaction to this thread. It came from another place and another pain entirely.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

No, I agree with Dan that the Luftwaffe comment is totally unnecessary and slanders everyone there, not just the handful of racist assholes who are acting like dicks (ie the "Jesus Freaks" who are already called out in the subject header).

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

slanders everyone there

There is no more delicate way to put this. Dan's brother is not there.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

ok now i'm totally on board with the 'fuck you' sentiment.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

best thread ever

or not, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

You may want to reconsider your emotional reaction to this thread. It came from another place and another pain entirely.

WOW REALLY?????

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

You know, what with the invocation of the phrase "dead brother" and all, it didn't occur to me AT ALL that my reaction to this thread might carry an element of displaced anger, since my brain is made of pudding.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

blount OTM. Way to miss any point possible, Aimless.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

sigh

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

of course, note that all u.s. military schools have had problems in the last 60 years opening up to folks who weren't just white protestant dudes.

such places might be slow to change with the times, but change does happen.

kingfish, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Also, I'd like to apologize to Tad and Matt for saying "fuck you" to them because, while I was irritated, there wasn't any real rancor towards them, whereas Aimless fucking deserves a gigantic double-barrelled neon-flashing "FUCK YOU" with attendant crotch-kicking Imperial Stormtroopers doing a gonad gavotte but I've diluted the phrase by using it where it wasn't necessary.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, at least now you're focused.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Hahahahahaha this was like the greatest thread in the world. I should be pissy more often.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Didn't they pass some sort of regulation saying "Okay prosletyzers, time to simmer down."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

this thread=best reductio ad absurdum ever

M. V. (M.V.), Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Ned, I don't remember the details but it was along those lines!

this thread=best reductio ad absurdum ever

Really? It seems more like a controlled hissy fit.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

We should have threads about this kind of stuff, though! ILX is all about threads that start off "hahaha FUCK EVERYONE IN X GROUP [insert link to something one dumbass in X group did]," and it's fucking tiring, and then the thing in question doesn't get discussed because we have to have some giant argument about whether it's stupid or not to start threads that way (POSTER B: "Fuck you I'm from the south you're a dick etc" vs. POSTER A: "Dude it's just a joke etc").

Anyway I find it kind of dumb and irritating, but I guess maybe it's too much to hope that people will ever save us the trouble by starting threads that say "okay SOME PEOPLE related to group X are doing stupid shit."

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I was friends with a guy in philly whose name was elegance. for real. his breath was stinky, but he was fashion-model good-looking. oh, and he was black. everytime i see your new(ish) handle, dan, i think of him. i wonder what he's up to?

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

are you saying that dan has stinky breath, scott?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)
