Tony Blair

I was going to nominate Sellers, or Atkinson? What about, Charlie Chaplin? Cary Grant, sometimes? Jim Broadbent? Alec Guinness, sometimes?

The Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

those are viable suggestions probably.

rebecca s (rebecca S), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

ok great onward.

rebecca s (rebecca S), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

it would be neat, i think, if you talked specifically about british masculine identity within this topic.

i always like the fall of empire aspect, the generation coming of age in the 1960s, having won wwII but lost an entire world of colonies at the same time. i played the kinks' arthur more than once in history seminars.

Northern Soul as proto-rave culture. Trace a line from the Wigan Casino to Irvine Welsh (okay, he's Scottish, but Scotland is in the UK, no?).

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

UK pornography laws ( I am being serious here, I think it's fascinating how it went from raging debate over Lady Chatterly to Channel 5 and Razzle in Tesco)

UK pornography laws ( I am being serious here, I think it's fascinating how it went from raging debate over Lady Chatterly to Channel 5 and Razzle in Tesco)

Speaking of Razzle and other such UK literary periodicals... do they still have that "no Mr. Stiffie" rule?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

The mull of kintyre rule still prevails.

Bbbut the Clash were shit!

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

well there's the start of your discussion then!

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of Razzle and other such UK literary periodicals... do they still have that "no Mr. Stiffie" rule?

I saw a porno mag recently and it was more explicit in certain absurdly specific details compared to when last I read one (something like ten years ago or more). It would embarrass me to describe the differences, but I find it impossible to believe that any laws or regulations were passed that allowed these...new things.

One of the most significant events ever in world culture, not just British culture since 1945, is Michael Moorcock and Hawkwind getting together. Write about that.

mournblade, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

mod as compared to punk, ska/new wave, teddy boy or raver: 40 years of youth culture. only with better clothes & rides.

kingfish, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

well, to be honest, you would be better tracing out the northernsoul-rave continuum in the north of england

warrington, burnley, cleethorpes, morley, wigan etc etc etc

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Scritti Politti. Deconstruction, Communism, a trangression from scratchy post-punk to pop, hell yeah!

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

the 20 minutes has been over for many hours now.
she decided to approve walter potter/damien hirst and then my prof (who was sitting in) got all excited about dioramas and heritage and spectacles and I got all excited about getting to write about funny taxidermy. YYYAAAAAAAAAAY

rebecca s (rebecca S), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

yay! dioramas!

kingfish, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Cleethorpes Winter Gardens always claims to have been a major Northern Soul venue, going back years and years. I'm always slightly suspicious of anywhere in Cleethorpes claiming to be a major anything - does anyone know if they are justified?

I saw a porno mag recently and it was more explicit in certain absurdly specific details compared to when last I read one (something like ten years ago or more). It would embarrass me to describe the differences

Aw, go on!
