The avocado

It's that time of year where avocados are cheap and plentiful. We've been eating them nearly daily around here on salads and garnishing tacos. Although my native Californian friend condemns the Texan avocado as the puny kind they'd let fall off the back of a truck in Cali I still love him. Just slice one open, sprinkle on some salt and have at it yum.

Last night I made the first guacmole of the season to go with some chicken quesadillas and it was heaven. Let's praise this bumpy green hero.

Ilxor Andy at grasshopper dot org recently said something about an avocado smoothie, and I've been thinking about it every since.

Avocado

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

hmm i even searched for avocado before making this thread but didn't come up with that one.

don't know about smoothie. i'm not a fan of vegetable juice. but damn I wish I'd picked up more avocados on the way home.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I am totally getting some on the way home and making ceviche tonight.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

avocade smoothies are fantastic. Being near bubble tea central in chicago, you can get them all over the place. They have mango, grapes, and honey dew melon in them too, just to sweeten it some.

Most of the time I eat avocados plain, with just a little bit of salt.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Okay, that sounds gooder than fuck, and I've already got mangos and honeydew melon at home. It's set.

We've just been throwin' em on every taco and salad we've eaten lately.

last night it was fresh guac which simply can't be beat.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Guacamole is the ultimate food. You know this because 1) it's an artery bomb and 2) it takes genius to make it REAL REAL good

Aaron A., Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Mmmm, avocado. I never use them at home, which I should change, but I love when they turn up in daily life.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

I used to hate avocados (-es?) after I ate way too much guacamole this one time...but lately I've been eating them again as part of an attempt to eat 5 veg/fruit a day, and now I like them! Especially on baby leaf salads with ham and sunblush tomato oil and pepper. Yum.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I only recently have come to liking avocados. I don't know what I was thinking all that time.

We are going out tonight for the express purpose of eating avocado dishes and margaritas. I think I might have the stuffed avocado at a local restaurant.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

(That other thread is on ILCooking, it wouldn't show up on an ILE search.)

Avocados are great. Although as I mentioned on the other thread, the closer you get to the West Coast (or let's say California), the better they are.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

yes you sound like my Texan green card friend. Well until I can sample true Cali Avocados I'll just do with what I can get.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone here tried avocados just drizzled with a bit of soy sauce? Pure heaven.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Avocados are the best type of food, really because there is very little you can add them to that they wouldn't IMPROVE by their presence.

coyotes and dogs love them too, proof that dogs are man's best friend.

Lingbertt, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine went to Indonesia, and told me that there, avocados are considered dog food. Dogs love them. They are omnipresent, and the people have no time for them. But! They learned that tourists will pay good money -- very good money! -- to have them mashed up into, basically, guacamole. So they feed the tourists the dog food and laugh and laugh and laugh...

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 April 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Holy crap, now I want me some avocado goodness. Smashed up, with a little lime juice and salt, and squished into a corn tortilla. Roll up the tortilla and -- OH! Died and gone to tastebud heaven. OR -- I like to make chalupas this way: crispy chalupa shell, garlicky refried beans, sour cream, mushed-up avocado, finely shredded mild cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, and finely shredded lettuce. Oh yeah.

Also: Diced avocado in a savory sandwich. Mmmmm.

Also: Guacamole mixed with pico de gallo and served with tortilla chips.

Also: Shrimp salad with diced avocado in it.

(Wow, the things one learns! Indonesians consider them dog food, huh? Weird.)

what a strange food. you'd think upon first glance and taste that it's kind of weird in texture and it doesn't seem quite right and then omg it's so creamy and satisfying!!

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 21 April 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

wait. Dee, you're craving mexican food?!??

Actually, I'm just craving some avocadoey goodness. But I think it'd taste a whole lot better in a corn tortilla than in a slice of bread. (Not like I can escape Mexican food, though. As much as I might gripe about its ubiquitousness in my life. *wink*)

The Spirit of Sam Endicott (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 21 April 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I love avocadoes.

Mashed avocado spread thickly on buttered wholegrain toast is a fabulous snack.

Also good when cut in half, placed in a baking dish which has been half filled with water, and then topped with flaked white crabmeat mixed with a small amount of white sauce to bind it, and sprinkled with a little grated cheese and a dash of paprika. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes until bubbling. Yum.

C J (C J), Thursday, 21 April 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Morrissons "Bumper Avocado Bags" are £1.29 and AMAZINGLY ENOUGH actually tend to have at least two ripe ones when you buy them, unlike the "ready to eat taste the difference" ones which are still flourescent green. My problem with buying UNRIPE ones is that I put them away to ripen and then forget I have them and then they go WRONGCOQ. Wah. Anyway I have been mashing them up with salt and pepper and olive oil and putting them on grilled ciabatta. Or hey, just EATING them.

Although yesterday I had some in Pret's "amazing no bread sandwich" and it was kinda lame, no seasoning, no dressing on the leaves lead to it kinda clashing with the other stuff. Bah. I might have it again today tho as I R glutton for punishment.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Indonesians are insane.

Lingbertt, Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Pret's "amazing no bread sandwich"

I think they may have ripped you off here, Starry.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

avocado smoothies/shakes are fantastic, and almost usurped taro bubble tea as my treat of choice from chinatown. i was unsure what to expect the first time i tried one, as avocados are so savoury, but the shakes are quite sweet (though not cloying). i don't even want to think how fatty/caloric they are, but god are they delicious.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 21 April 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

after 20 years of living in california and taking avocadoes for granted i'm finding it hard to adjust to this new jersey thing of unripe, rock-hard avos that need a week in a paper bag with an apple just to approach ripeness. woe is me.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 21 April 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

What is a no bread sandwich??? (Plus, I never go to Pret but noticed they are currently promoting a soup which is 'free' of, um, all ingedients?)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 21 April 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

it's basically a salad with the sandwich filling on top of a bed of greens, packaged in a square box. why they don't just call it a salad, i have yet to figure out.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 21 April 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

They started doing the no bread sandwiches around the same time as the girls went Atkins-crazy. It's has no bread! And it's an alternative to salad! "But it is a salad!" "Shhh!" etc

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 21 April 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

I can't afford avocadoes and anyway I can only ever find unripe ones. I would eat loads if I could. Loads of avocadoes. I aleady eat loads of everything else.

What is taro bubble tea?

Alix with an i? (alix), Thursday, 21 April 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

it's sweet (but not crazy sweet), very milky tea with taro root flavouring and big pearls (bubbles) of black tapioca.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I would dig avocado spread on bread. Why when there's a perfectly good tortillas sitting right there.

Last night we had yum yum ceviche with avocado slices on top. ooooo my mouth is salvaiting with the memory.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I used to love guac, but now I don't want to know about avocadoes of any kind.

I am a pariah in Southern California.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I made the ceviche last night! I still have like a quart of it left!

I will take the must-sit-in-a-brown-paper-bag-to-ripen avocadoes to no avocadoes at all any day.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

mmm... ceviche. there's a place in austin, cattycorner to the driskill hotel, that has DELICIOUS ceviche.

hmm, can't think of it. We went to Curra's which is one of my favorite places for just about anything.

You have a quart left Nick? Damn how much did you make? I'm on my way to the grocery store. this is not good.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

how cheap is cheap? im seeing them here in nyc like for 1.79 each still.

also, how do you make ceviche?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, we went buckwild and made a super shit ton of it. Probably used at least 2 pounds of shrimp haha.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

the mexican grocer down the street has some good specimans, two for a buck.

Nick, recipes? I've never made it myself.

Last night's was snapper and shrimp, not to heavy on the lime/garlic. excellent.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

There's lots of kinds of ceviche (sometimes spelled seviche), made with some kinds of fish and/or shrimp, what I usually make is basically like a whole bunch of shrimp, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lemon juice, all chopped up, with avocado slices on top. Um, that's kind of a 'recipe' I guess.

This is why the Nickalicious Cookbook will never work.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

your ceviche is even better with the lime juice, IMO. In Panama they eat a lot of pulpo, which is octopus ceviche...amazing! But I didn't see much avocado eating there, I'm afraid.

p.j. (Henry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

im seeing them here in nyc like for 1.79 each still.

my favorite ceviche is spicy peppers, lime juice, snapper, squid, shrimp and a shitload of thin-sliced red onions. this avodaco topping intriguees me.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Ceviche-makers, how fresh do you require your shrimp to be? If I try this with previously-frozen Thai shrimp from the big-box store, am I going to the hospital?

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I think ceviche needs to use the freshest fish. Nick, how long did you let it marinate? sometimes I've had it and the lime was overpowering. not good.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

This thread makes me very sad. I LOVE avocados. Unfortunately, last summer I found out I'm allergic to them and they were contributing greatly to my constant sinus infections. I miss them alot.

The grocery store next to my work sells organic avocados in packages of three for $2.49 all year round, and I generally try to buy only things that are in season and, if possible, locally grown, but sometimes I just can't resist. I like to make enormous avocado-sweetcorn-tuna melts on sourdough.

I was just about to say this!! I'd avoided them for 22 years coz they were green and had a weird texture, and they were one of those foods I just "didn't like" for no apparent reason. And then I tried one and was like "huh what that's it??". The texture is nice and all but plz explain what the big deal is!! They taste like NOTHING.

Ripe avos are one of my favourite things about living in CA. Back home, I used to be able to get loose avocados from Sainsburys that would pretty much be ripe that day UNTIL they decided to launch packets of two "ripe!!" avos that meant they put all the decent ones in these packs and all the loose ones were hard as rocks. (And yeah, there's no going back once you open it).

am moved & amused by phrasing of the soul of an avocado leaving after opening, BUT, sometimes you can get something out of them - you'd want to leave them in a cupboard rather than the fridge, for a couple of days, usually, and the unexposed portions of the avocado might still go soft.

but uh huh these things are life-fruit. salt is compulsory imo.

This is pretty interesting... I'm mildly allergic to them, so I never buy them.. but had no idea about the political & ecological ramifications of the lowly alligator pear:

In Cherán, however, there was no such violence. Nor were there any avocados. Thirteen years ago, the town’s residents prevented corrupt officials and a local cartel from illegally cutting down native forests to make way for the crop. A group of locals took loggers hostage while others incinerated their trucks. Soon, townspeople had kicked out the police and local government, cancelled elections, and locked down the whole area. A revolutionary experiment was under way. Months later, Cherán reopened with an entirely new state apparatus in place. Political parties were banned, and a governing council had been elected; a reforestation campaign was undertaken to replenish the barren hills; a military force was chartered to protect the trees and the town’s water supply; some of the country’s most advanced water filtration and recycling programmes were created. And the avocado was outlawed.
