Things you bought, that you hardly used, before losing

1. I bought a copy of "Animal Farm" (the book), from McKay's a secondhand bookstore in Knoxville, with the intention of reading it on the plane home. I brought it onto the plane, read a couple of pages and realised I wasn't in the mood for reading fiction so I put it into the seat pocket (where all the magazines go) and watched depressing films. I forgot to take the book back when I alighted the plane, and never saw that book again :(

The pig did it.

I tend to cut this process out by deciding what I want, paying for it, then walking off leaving it on the counter.

2. It was gym day, and I had run out of shampoo so I bought some VO5 volumising shampoo from Boots.

Went to the gym, the shower was really cold that day, so I didn't use the shampoo, had a quick cold shower, and dried up quickly and changed. Went home before I realised I had left the shampoo (and an almost empty tube of shower gel) in the shower room. :(

I went there the next day, the shower gel was still there (although curiously in a DIFFERENT cubicle), the shampoo was gone (i suspect some scum took it seeing it's pretty much brand new).

i left an NME singles of the year 199X CD in my basket at Sainsbury's once. i'd only just got it from the Oxfam shop next door for a quid, so it doesn't count x2 on this thread (that it was a rubbish CD, that it was 2nd hand)

A fucking mobile phone, and a book I really wanted to read. But I didn't lose them, they were stolen. Grr.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

alan my book was 2nd hand too! (it was from a 2nd hand bookstore) anything that YOU have hardly used counts.

5. a new watch (THIS breaks the rules cos I didn't buy it myself) my mum got me when I was 13.. it was a casio digital thing and it had a stop timer that counts to the millisecond that i loved playing with (to try and stop it at exactly 1 second).

had PE class that week. got changed, left watch at changing room by accident, went back and watch was gone :(

i have never worn a watch ever since, to this date. (it used to be just me being weird about how i'm likely to lose it if i had one - now it's really just that there's no need because my mobile phone tells time)

6. A colander d:'C

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Ok maybe :| would be more accurate.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I mean where the hell can you lose a colander? It was in my kitchen for about a week and my kitchen's pretty small – who'd have stolen it? Where would it hide?

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

7. A super-nice sterling silver necklace my dad gave me for my 16th birthday. Actually, a friend lost it. D:

sugarpants: new and improved! (sugarpants), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

7.5 We lost a pair of tiki salad tongs for ages. They turned up in that gap beneath the bottom drawer.

8. umbrella - bought, put in bag, used twice, left on train. BUT now I have a smaller one that doesn't have the handle hanging out the side of the bag and knocking into everything, so perhaps it was a subconscious decision. :)

haitch (haitch), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

beanz brought the memories all back :(

9. I bought this potato skin peeler from Tesco - it was only 99p, but it was sooo good. it even had a thing on the other side that you used to scrape out blemishes on the potatoes! - i used it 5 times, and one day it was just gone. gone. nothing :(

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

10. I used to have a really nice umbrella (i actually never bought it, i discovered it in my flat that belonged to nobody). I used to carry it around a lot but never really used it very often, people would always go "ooh that's a nice brolly!".

Then I took it to Glastonbury last year, and i used it alright, but one night I went back to my tent drunk, didn't want to take the drenching umbrella inside the tent so i left it outside (but too drunk to conceal it properly).

Woke up the next day and some scally had stolen it. :((( I never found one that's as good since (that didn't cost £50).

I have bought another one now that is pretty fun (it's all AUTOMATIC! you press a button and it not only extends, but folds out fully at the same time!), except, oh god. I still haven't used it. i'm going to lose it i just know it.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Helps to get it out in the open though doesn't it? Maybe the peeler and the colander have gone off on holiday together like the dish that ran away with the spoon.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

i bet your colander had started a blog, like mine did last year http://kenscolander.blogspot.com

Lovely Animal sunglasses - the first pair of sunglasses that really suited me - the third day of my holiday, on my birthday no less, I sat them on a big boulder on the beach, went in swimming and a huge wave came and stole them :-(

My boyfriend said we could go and buy another pair of sunspecs but I was in a huff and like a big kid whined "But I liked those ones".

Rumpie, Thursday, 21 April 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

When I went on vacation to France 2 years ago I bought a pair of sunglasses and lost them about 2 days into the trip somewhere in the Eiffel tower. I then bought another pair which I lost a week later in Avignon. I then bought a third pair which I lost 2 days later (in Arles, I think). After that I pretty much gave up and decided to just get by by squinting.

Needless to say, I don't normally wear any type of glasses.

A book called the House of Breath by William Goyen, which I bought in early 2001 in Denver. I didn't even get to start it. I can't remember exactly where I lost it, but I'm pretty sure it was folded up in a newspaper and I forgot it was there. I still haven't read it and only ever remember I wanted to *after* I've just bought a load of books from amazon.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 April 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

A memory stick thing ,,, I had the first one in the office but lost it before I even used it (probably because I refused to wear it round my neck like some sort of weird identity thing, like seems to be the fashion now).

nine years pass...

Due to lack of inspiration, I bought a family member one of those egg cubers as a jokey xmas present two years ago. I definitely remember receiving it in the post and putting it somewhere safe. I am yet to find it again.

Broth Viking (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 February 2015 09:32 (eleven years ago)

I bought a cheap John Lee Hooker lp in the mid 80s from somewhere on Portobello Road. I put it in a bag I had around another bag, or put the bag I already had into the carrier bag it was in. Or possibly didn't cos as I walked further down the road I found out that it wasn't with me. I went back and looked in both of the shops I'd been in and didn't find it. Couldn't work out where it disappeared to. Just think I could be a boogie superstar if that didn't happen.

LOst a bag with a load of clothing on a drunken night in Stoke on a Loop tour. My Dad had given me several sweatshirts and things when he'd come through London on a then recent trip. Some pretty nice stuff & it was in that bag which I could never remember what happened to.

Is there an emoticon that can convey the trauma?

nine years pass...

Autographed Morbid Angel cd, sat on my desk for two years so I'd know where it was.

Finally got ready to sell it to make a little cash, and it's missing from the desk. The cleaners that work on my room routinely rearrange my things and I've complained about it, but who knows.

Does lead to a new resolution- not to buy things I won't regularly use or appreciate cos lord knows how long it's been gone
