I scored 32/44 with an average error of 101 miles, but I am sure you’ll do better!

Mark.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

41/44, 12 miles, 224 seconds.

It gets a lot easier the further you get into it, of course.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

37/44. Average error 64 miles. Goddamn Balkans.

robster (robster), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

42/44 average error 9 miles

Ed (dali), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

I amazed myself by getting Malta spot on - I think that must have been luck.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

29/40 argh those pesky eastern european countries

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

43/44, 4 miles avg error. I put San Marino a bit too far south.

OleM (OleM), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Ed, that's impressive!

I was furthest out with Bulgaria, but those little countries were tricky at times. I put Andorra in completely the wrong bit of the Pyrenees.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

42/44 average error 8 miles

IN YOUR FACE, ED, IN YOUR FACE

ahem

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

wargh those eastern ones are tough.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

I Blame malta and Luxembourg. If luxembourg hand't have been firts country up I'd have been spot on.

Ed (dali), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

43/44, average error 10 miles.

bloody Belarus, I know where it is but not when there is nothing to fit it against!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

I put San Marino a bit too far south

Me too. My biggest mistake was Belarus, which I got right near the start.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

41/44 (mistakes: Czech, Hungary and Malta)

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

38/44 with an average error of 77 miles. the nineties burned the balkans borders into my head and i got lucky in that a couple i definitely would've fucked up came later. i think they could've been more lenient on san marino!

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

Crikey - a mere 27. Biggest mistake 299 miles.

Rumpie, Friday, 22 April 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

that was hard. i don't even want to put what i got. i thought i was good at this shit. i'm going to presume everyone else is lying about their score, to make me feel better about myself.

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

36/44 with an average error of 62 miles 9and biggest error 292 miles). The little ones are difficult, even if you know roughly where they should be.

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

Luck of the draw definitely plays into it. I'd be much worse off if I'd got Belarus before both Ukraine and Russia.

OleM (OleM), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

I got 36, got all the Balkans right but it was all that Belarus and Moldova nonsense that did for me plus those titchy countries - I was about 1 millimetre out with Monaco and it was counted as wrong!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

bah my mousing skills let me down and I dropped Italy too soon

Let's escalate!

Here you have to rotate and resize the country as well -- AND you don't get the name of the country (except for the otherwise unidentifiable mini-countries)!

42/44

http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/country_europe_G8_drag_spin.html

OleM (OleM), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

I got Albania first and made it so big it filled up the whole of Europe. Then when I tried to shrink it back it disappeared and I was unable to find it and move on. 0/44.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Pah!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

41/44 average error 47 miles.

Bloody Malta, San Marino and LICHTENSTEIN!!! That's not even a country, that's a principality.

God, these are addictive.

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

On Johnney B's one I got 70%:

brazil - rightt
vanuatu - WRONG
czech republic - right

oman - WRONG

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

224 miles average out on original. Anywhere east of Luxembourg and I'm basically lost. Also, I realised I had absolutely no idea where Andorra was.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

90% on the Geography Olympics! It tells me my geography knowledge is superb! Made my day!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

don't much like the look of the leaderboard tho:

http://www.geographyolympics.com/leaderboard.php

The Turks are the geography kings! With the British languishing at 82nd.

Haha, the North Koreans are last. Does Kim let them know other countries exist???

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

38/44 spot on, average error 85 miles, 86% correct. I got Moldova too south as well - I think I dropped it in Turkey somewhere. And I forgot how close Malta is to Sicily. My first one was the Vatican, which I got absolutely spot on.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

41/44, booboos with the tiddlers: Malta, Vatican City and Andorra.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

33/44 - 238. Fuck you, Belarus.

driede mousedropping (Dave225), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Same as Ole, which puts me equal first! Fucking Andorra.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Andorra's easy - just in the middle of the Pyrennees. Maybe it's because I ski.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

I put ot too close to the atlantic

Ed (dali), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

I just fucked my state and country in the geography olympics. Worst country picks ever.

driede mousedropping (Dave225), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

41/44, 39 miles - I got stuck starting with Germany and got it very wrong. Germany! It's massive! I've been there! The shame! And the principalities can fuck right off.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Imagine my surprise to discover that Germany bordered Denmark, haha...

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

35/44, 89 miles.
To quote the great Kate "Bloody Malta, San Marino and LICHTENSTEIN!!!"

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I got Lichtenstein right.

35/44, 105 miles

screw you San Marino! and Malta! and Vatican City!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

i am totally NOT going to try that. i already know i couldnt locate luxembourg on a map if my life depended on it.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

43/44, 11 miles - I put the Czech Republic, early on, much too far South, more or less on Hungary.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

37/44 90 miles. wow i totally don't know central and eastern europe.

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS TURKEY DOING ON THERE?

Benedetto XVI (gcannon), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

34/44, 129

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

43/44 -- just biffed Malta by 7 miles

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS TURKEY DOING ON THERE?

the map was sent back from the year 2012

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I never knew Russia had a separated bit on the other side of Lithuania.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

77% 34/44 with an average error of 227 miles, due in large part to the fact that they led me off with Moldova and Lativa, that was rough. Also I confused Lichtenstein and Luxembourg which was frustrating. Those microcountries are tricky.

Ash (ashbyman), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

I never knew Russia had a separated bit on the other side of Lithuania.

Part of the spoils of World War II -- that was part of what was East Prussia, specifically centered around the city of Konigsberg, one of the (if not the) original seat of the Prussian kingdom. The name's been changed to Kaliningrad and so it remains. The area has strategic value as a warm water port and obvious symbolic value given WWI and II and etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

But is it art?

Momus (Momus), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

In 319 secs, 42/44 - 95%, average error 9 miles AGAIN like Ed! Are you really me? Did you move Belgium a bit too far south toward Lille and not close enough to Delft? Did you decide at the last minute to move Malta a bit closer to Tunisia when you were right above it as well?

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I somehow got Monaco spot on!

But still did shitty. 32/44. 228 miles.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

On the Geography Challenge site I received 60% the first time (damn Oceania) and 100% the last two times.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I got w/in 1% of $V£N on this one! Fuck Monaco.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

On the updated version of the Euro geography one I received 36/44, or 82%. 812 seconds, ouch.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

35/44 average error 94 miles. I blame all those tiny little places. Plus, they missed of Latveria.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

And Ruritania.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

36/44 198 sec. The Balkans were indeed my downfall.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

41/44, error of 32 miles. Just minor positioning errors (well, that and confusing Malta and Corfu as I always do.)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

This has been a very educational morning all around!

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

31/44. a lot better than i thought. however: moldova?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

40/44, average error 62 miles, 296 sec.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 22 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

But is it art?

Sure! Ugly art, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

33/44 - 127 miles - didn't keep track of the time.

Mostly screwed up on the micro countries, too. But did remarkably well in the Balkans for a woodchuck.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 22 April 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Friday, 22 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

39/44, 358 seconds, average 75 mile error (I really screwed up Malta because it was not shown on the map) and that's not including my American handicap!

nickn (nickn), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

39/44, 48 miles. My Slovenia was off by like 600 miles.

wetmink (wetmink), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

34/44, 140 miles, 335 seconds

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

40/44 This is a lot easier than the U.S. one since it leaves them on there and nearly every country has a coastline.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Sunday, 24 April 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I did terrible, yet surprisingly well.

29/44
AE 346

I did much better on this than with the States!! I thought I'd get like 15% seeing as to how I don't know half of Europe.

Funny, as I write this "Sister Europe" plays in the backround.
