The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

46/47, 12 miles - my mistake was Bhutan

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Of course I know my ASIA. John Wetton was the bass player.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

44/47 ave. error 27 miles

Ed (dali), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

39/47, 84 miles. You really need China and Russia to come up early in this one.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

45/47 127. Bloody Tajikistan.

but my score would've been a bit higher or lower depending on the order the countries were given in.

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

47/47 woo! A bit of a lucky draw again, though.

OleM (OleM), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

40/47, but considering that Russia was the very last piece I had, that's not so bad. Nobody had told me that they'd invented Myanmar either - I mean, who calls it Myanmar, really!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

44/47

average error 21 miles

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

41/47. I put Brunei in the Persian Gulf! Whoops!

Momus (Momus), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

44/47, but i feel i was unlucky with the draw. on the other hand, if you don't know where Afghanistan is in this day and age, even on an empty map, you get what you deserve.

when did Cyprus become part of Asia?

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

people should print their times!

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

when did Cyprus become part of Asia?

Same time Israel became part of Europe.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Asia was the hardest for me!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

What put me off was the dodgy map plotting. I kept thinking that Vietnam should be higher up on the page than that.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I suck at asia:
34/47 - 328 miles

driede mousedropping (Dave225), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

I also put Brunei in the Persian Gulf. 40/47. There are huge blanks in Asia - I basically know the bits north of India and the bits where the Tsunami hit. And Taiwan.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

40/47. Silly Bahrain and Brunei.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

46/47, 11 miles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

43/47, 130 miles (i thought "sultan of brunei" and absently dumped it somewhere on the red sea coast)

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

haha i didn't even read the thread, everyone did that!

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Not me! (The only one I got slightly wrong was was Krysytzstan. Or however it's spelled.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah i fucked that one up too. and i put mongolia too far south.

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I can't tell you what my initial score was... I kept messing up the "stan" countries so badly that I'd start over. Eventually I got 'em. Not so much proof of my knowledge, but I definitely learned something.

I aced the Middle East, for reasons that may be obvious.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I knew Brunei was in southeast Asia, but I put it near the Phillipines.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I aced the Middle East, for reasons that may be obvious.

?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Cause, you know, the map is on the news every day.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

44/47, 94% avg. error 27 miles like Ed.
399 seconds.

This game was really slow on my computer.

I missed Bhutan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan, and just barely, too.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

44/47, 107 miles, 289 seconds. second-guessed myself on Bhutan, pissed off about Brunei increasing my avg dist a lot higher than it should be.

TOMBOT, Friday, 22 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

44/47, with average error 32 miles

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

http://afghanistan.blogs.cnn.com/2010/01/07/past-war-offers-afghanistan-lessons-and-its-not-vietnam/

The Philippine-American War, which lasted from 1899 to 1902. The war is largely forgotten today, but it was a bloody preview of the type of warfare that the U.S. military faced in Asia and now in Afghanistan, historians say.

Aside from the war being largely forgotten, apparently continental boundaries have been disregarded as well!

Asia has apparently lost 15 countries since this quiz was initially posted (an appalling 20/32, 544 miles - I'm placing most of the blame on getting Bhutan and Brunei to begin and not getting Russia or China till the end), so it surely won't be long till that's accurate.
