A Fucking Serving

How much is a serving?

I keep reading stuff about having 9 servings of fruit a day, 6 servings of grain a day, etc....

So how much is one serving? A handful? 2 ounces? A tablespoon? I consider a "serving" of an apple to be a fucking apple. No way I can eat nine of them in a day.

diedre mousedropping (Dave225), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

How many servings of mousedroppings do they recommend?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday some chick on NPR said a serving of fruit/veg was the size of a baseball.

quincie, Friday, 22 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

How much fucking is one serving? Fifty thrusts? Seventy-five?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Nutritionist lady also said a "large apple" was around two servings, but a two-baseball size apple sounds crazy to me. That would be, like, a "ginormous apple."

quincie, Friday, 22 April 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I think you only need to hit the ball once with the racket innit.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

xpost I find that measure unhelpful. Eating an apple is rather easy, but a baseball-sized clump of spinach is a little daunting.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

That would mean you'd be eating like 5 pounds of food a day...

deride mosedripping (Dave225), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

take one multivitamin

When you say "daunting", do you actually mean "scrumptious"?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

But once you've cooked the spinich that's about a teaspoon-full.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

If we're meant to eat five "servings" of vegetables a day, as the government says, why doesn't five helpings of chips count? ('cos chips come from potatoes which are vegetables plus you get them cooked in vegetable oil - okay, not always, but sometimes).

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Cooking spinach = argh (chard, that's something else)

Eating fresh baby spinach in baseball-sized amounts = wonderful (do not try and do that in one bite, however).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I guess I was picturing a baseball of COOKED spinach.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

how hard do you have to pack the spinach? is it a loose ball, or a solid, tightly-packed ball? that could kill you, or at least turn you into Robin Williams in a sailor's outfit.

What is a Portion of Fruit and Veg?

1 apple, banana, pear, orange or other similar sized fruit
2 plums, satsumas, kiwi fruit or other similar sized fruit
1⁄2 a grapefruit or avocado
1 large slice of melon or fresh pineapple
3 heaped tablespoons of vegetables, beans or pulses
3 heaped tablespoons of fruit salad or stewed fruit
1 heaped tablespoon of raisins or sultanas
3 dried apricots
1 cupful of grapes, cherries or berries
1 dessert bowl of salad
1 small glass (150ml) of pure fruit juice

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

What about wine, which is made from grapes?

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Well then, what about cider?

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

I agreee...who wants to listen to government advice anyway, they're bound to have an ulterior motive, like wanting to keep us healthy so we can work longer and pay more taxes for them to waste on nuclear bombs/the national health service/asylum seekers/wars in iraq/students/etc/etc (delete according to taste/predjudices)

How much is a serving of thumb?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Spinach rendered in garlic and oil could be the staple of my diet. NUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm.

It's truly a fine thing (can't wait for the spinach at the garden I help in to thrive in full). I just have a deep hatred of the prepared spinach I first encountered when young, namely sloppy green mash.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Fuck a serving. I'm just not that hungry.

diedre mousedropping (Dave225), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

There are very few vegetables I dislike; the only ones that come to mind are actually fruits (okra, squash, lima beans).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

One doctor tried to assure me that a serving was one item of fruit. I said "So a watermelon or a grape are both one serving?" "Yes," he said, trying to look as if he knew what he was talking about, but failing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

but a watermelon is like 75% water!

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

92% water, even!

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

i'm allergic to much of that other 8%

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Wait, those rules of thumb -- I have small hands, so does that mean my servings of fruit/veg would be inaccurate? Is this based on how much food for my size? Because eff that, man. I could eat a whole watermelon by myself.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I do not like apples as big as my fist. They are mealy and I never finish them.
