WOW

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

There's a three-pack Jackie Chan DVD I picked up for $5 or something which will probably have horrible transfers and all, but which contains this film, which sounds like one of the greatest things ever made.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Summary: In a Hong Kong martial arts film that completely defies description, an elite group of fighters in World War II (including Jackie Chan, a Wayne Newton clone, a hobo and two Chinese guys in Scottish kilts) must rescue a group of generals (including Abraham Lincoln [!?]) from Japanese Nazis who drive late '70s model American cars. And to tell any more than that would ruin the glorious madness that is this film.

OH MY LORD

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

See, I knew others would understand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Ned that sounds like the best movie ever. You should, uh, not make copies for all of ILX.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

At the least I suspect a local movie FAP is in the offing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

My best bargain bin purchase was probably this one-disc 4-movie set of super old black & white horror movies with names like The Brain That Would Not Die.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I am definitely envious.

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Can I just say again that if the new Miyazaki opens around here in theaters ONLY with the dub with Billy Crystal that I will find new walls to beat my head against?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Disney hates us.

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Well, yes. And they will be delivering Chicken Little to us very very soon.

msp (mspa), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Even Pixar wasn't immune. Monsters Inc. is truly very imaginative and enjoyable and WHO DID THEY FUCKING CAST IN A LEAD ROLE. Good god, the ending of the film was essentially an argument that all kids want is bad Billy Crystal shtick in their dreams ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

It could have been worse, it could have been bad Robin Williams shtick.

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

*reels over the edge of the abyss, throws self back to safety*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Did also get Chicken Run at bargain bin prices the other week too. Very strange.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Diner is still on sale at Target for five bucks. Actually, it's probably selling for $4.96 or something.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

(i threw it out and kept the case.)

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Heheh. Nice, that's quite a score! :-) So how is 2046, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

mark are they mostly dvd's or vcd's for sale in chinatown? i keep hearing about those deals but forgetting to look into it when i'm in toronto

jones (actual), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

and p.s. did you write a book abt bj0rk?

jones (actual), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

i haven't watched any of them yet! this was just a couple of days ago, and i've barely been home since. i did scan 2046 though, and it looks striking. so, tonight! or maybe tomorrow.

jones -> yeah, there's a buncha bootleg dvd kiosks in the first mall in chinatown. i was shocked at how high-quality the product is - the discs are silkscreened and they come in these fancy foldout cardboard packages. really swank. and re: bjook, yes.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

(cool i want to read it!!)

jones (actual), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Billy Crystal, he's not so bad. Always remember "HAVE FUN STORMING THE CASTLE".

bootleg dvds in chinatown last week: oldboy, ong bak, kung fu hustle, shaolin soccer, chungking express, the new miyazaki, 2046 and totoro for $30 cdn.
Ong Bak is one of the best fighting movies I have seen. I got it, as well as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, on VCD in Mongkok for HK$13 each... less than US$2.

Also good and cheap are:
THE ISLE (Korea)
BATTLE ROYALE 2 (I haven't found BATTLE ROYAL cheap)
JUON (Japan)
RINGU (Japan)
FENG SHUI (Philippines)
BEAUTIFUL BOXER (Thailand)
IRON LADIES (Thailand)

Roman (Roman), Friday, 22 April 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)
