TS: R-N-R High School vs. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains

Since I have utterly no interest in the other two rock movies being compared at the moment. Let's discuss these two.

For me, it's a tough call.

-RNR HS has the fucking Ramones but only by chance b/c it was originally going to be Disco HS.

-Fab Stains has half the Sex Pistols and a great theme song (Be a Professional) but still not the Ramones. It does however have proto-type riot grrls who top the boys DIY-style instead of just camping out and battling groupies.

hmm. still torn. more ideas.

Not quite by chance on R-n-R -- it's true Corman wanted it to be Disco but the people who actually made the film convinced him that would suck and it had to be as they imagined it, about rock and roll. After that, though, it took a while for it to feature the Ramones -- earlier candidates included Todd Rundgren and Cheap Trick. Having it be the Ramones, though, was a stroke of genius. :-) Get the DVD, the commentary on it from the filmmakers is great!

Stains is wonderful but I literally only saw it in full the once back in 1983 or 4 on cable. Definitely want to see it again -- Black Randy and the Metrosquad were in it, right?

I do want the DVD (just thinking of that last night). Just remember the disco bit from an intro on AMC.

Black Randy, ::shudder::, is that a real band? I could, uh, help you out if you'd like to see it Ned.

"We don't put out." I remember seeing that somewhere on UHF in like 1983 and going ? I don't remember a plot, just some skunk girl with a streak in her hair and a pissed off rasta bus driver.

Er, RNR HS wins even without the rasta bus driver.

Her rant (Diane Lane's) is brilliant. Paraphrased, "I'm perfect but nobody in this shithole gets me 'cause I don't put out."

the cast in The Stains is fantastic, Lane, Laura Dern, Fee Waybill. . who else am I forgetting. . This was a staple of my preadolescene back when it would run on USA's NightFlight. I was fortunate enough to be reunited with it a couple of years ago.

:-) And yes, Black Randy was real, if now dead, I gather.

"join the professionals... be a professional... you're gonna be one anyway."

Both pretty bad, honestly, but Rock'n'Roll High School features some live Ramones, so CLASSIC. ....Stains has some good cameos (Steve Jones, Paul Simonon), and Fee Waybill is funny, but the whole endeavor is otherwise dreary and predictable.

"Things sure have changed since we got kicked outta high school."
