a gathering of sorts THIS THURSDAY (28th of May)

If time really flies when you're having fun, does this mean that Rob has had a fantastically great time? I hope so.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

i will come to this

i have a hat, that is shoegaze (check the what do you look like thread, near the end). perhaps i will wear it. if thats ok with everyone?

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

HEDONISM

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Welcome back, international travelling Rob!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

aw, it is meg's birthday on thursday, and i don't think she'll fancy a shoegazing night somehow, have a nice time anyway :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Thursdays are going to be a bit tricky from now on I feel, but I'll try and pop along for one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Unless the Valentines referenced in the blurb up top are the Jamaican group who recorded the magnificent Blam Blam Fever, my feeling is that I am likely to hate almost every minute of the music on offer, and won't be able to get a decent pint of bitter. Add in my recently terrible depression, and I think the odds are very heavily against my making it, much as I would love to welcome Rob back. I'll settle for saying "Welcome back, Rob - I've missed you" here until we do meet.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

sadly we will be in chicago - but i hope you all have fun, and i'm looking forward to seeing rob soon...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 25 April 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

yeh ditto (replace Chicago with Nyoik)

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 25 April 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah! I have been pimping Sonic Cathedrals for ages now, so I'm glad to see that other ILX0rs will be going now! Looking forward to seeing you again, Rob!

Plus Mark Gardener ::drools:: oh my!

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Monday, 25 April 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

i am looking forward to this, immensely

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Charlton - I might join you in the hat-wearing brigade, if that's alright.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

i don't really know what this music is going to be like but i like shoes and i like rob bolton so i'll come.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Shall I also wear a hat? Make it a theme?

Where is Suzy! Kil Phing is DJ-ing at this!

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I can't make this, but do pass my WELCOME BACK REGARDS onto teh Robz0r innit! Cor aint time passed, 'asn't 'ee GROWN... hope to see you soon tho Rob!

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Rob was only gone five minutes.

Happy birthday, Meg!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

I may come, finances permitting.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

It would be awesome if you came, Ed! And tell Suzy that Kil Phing will be DJ-ing! (And Emma Anderson as well, but she DJs there all the time.)

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

How did I miss this thread? I will do my best to make it, this will be aided by the promise of people willing to do VOX POPS otherwise I may have to spend time trawling the streets of London for proper members of the public otherwise.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Haha Starry, you're still laughing at the 'Lucretia my reflection' joke... Me too!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Argh, I'm sorry Rob, but it doesn't look like I'm going to make this. I have mental deadlines every Friday morning, so Thursday night drinking is generally out from now on. (I'll make an exception for Poptimism, naturally).

You're welcome to come and see me play records to semi-naked lesbians the following night, of course. Although between Thursday and Vitalic on Saturday I can see people wanting a night in...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I am really torn. I have just found out that thursday is also the night that some friends of mine (BBC Folk Live act of the year: Bellowhead) are also playing the same night.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

so what is the plan? i might be going to play FOOTBALL for a bit before this... just so that people will try and gaze at my shoes and then be shocked to discover FOOTBALL BOOTS instead. yeahhhhh (actually i probably wouldn't be let in)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Haha Keith I forgot my login details and had to re-register on the day of baby birth and it seemed the obvious name - perhaps I should eventually change it eh?

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

Vox Pops? What are Vox Pops? Are the like LOLLIES made from PEOPLE?!?!

EATING PEOPLE IS WRONG!!!

So long as it doesnt' involve eating people I would like to do it.

Come to the shoegazing, Ed. Bah.

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

eating people is fun sometimes!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

I approve of Gareth's hat.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

This is tonight! I didn't bring a hat, but I am wearing red-seamed stockings.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Yay, this is tonight! I am wearing a paisley shirt and will look like a hippie if I wear the hat I was planning to wear. Maybe I will wear my cowboy hat, but then my ex will think that's in honour of him, which it's not.

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Thursday, 28 April 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Wear the cowboy hat, Kate! Don't let your ex spoil your style!

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Hey, have a good time, kids. Give the man a great big welcome back snog, Miss M. Not in a shoegazing mood, but will be at home with my own Rob.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 28 April 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear I am not sure if I'll be able to make this now, a bit stressed from amount of stuff needing to be done, but Marianna - say hi to your Rob from me and I'll see you on Saturday for Mr Vitalic, yeah?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 April 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

folk vs shoegazing, erm

Ed (dali), Thursday, 28 April 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Go on, it was wonderful!

I didn't wear my cowboy hat after all, I wore my old ladies' gardening hat made from blue velvet.

Of course I walked in and the first person I ran into was my ex. Oh dear. Actually, it wasn't really that awkward, he was really friendly and we had a good chat. It was good to get some kind of perspective on it all - I realised after talking to him for about five minutes that although yeah, he's amazingly handsome and very charming, he is as dumb as a board. I would never have been happy with him. Which mends a lot of heartbreak.

Anyway, yeah, Mark Gardener was all folky now, with pretty 12-string and 3-part harmonies and fiddle playing. It was all daiseys and hedgerows and pretty breezes off the Ridgeway - it was even amazing to hear old Ride songs dressed up as country. I like G*ldr*sh a lot better as Ride than I like them as G*ldr*sh.

Amusement Parks On Fire were freaking AMAZING. I honestly spent half that gig blown back at about a 45 degree angle, they were so loud and powerful and a HUUUUUUUUGE sound. And yeah, Ed was right, they were just one riff short of being heavy metal, but what's wrong with that?

And then we danced all night to shoegazing and dronerock. The DJ played a whole 30 minute set that was JUST ONE CHORD!!! Ok, that's pretty easy to do when you play What Goes On (extended live version) by the Velvets and a Sonic Boom song and a Stereolab song. But it was lovely. Yes.

Just too bad about the beer.

Oh yes, and nice to see Rob again. :-)
