Mashed are best, of course. But I've had these extra-crunchy Lay's jalapeno chips that ruled, too.

No. The Best is Gratin Dauphinoise. And so simple to make too.

Serves 2/4

Just get a clove of garlic and smear it around a round baking dish by peeling it and pressing it firmly into the dish, then smear about 25g of butter around too.

Get about 4 or 5 medium-sized waxy potatoes, peel and then slice evenly about the width of a £1 coin (preferably with a slicer). Do not wash in water, the starch is needed. Arrange flat in the pan in layers.

Get about 200ml of double cream, mix in salt and pepper and then pour over until cream reaches top of potatoes. Grate over some more salt and pepper.

Cook in a medium oven (180 degrees) for 60-90 minutes unti pototoes are crsipy and brown on top and melting underneath.

I've gone off spuds recently. Somtimes I HAVE to mash things, so I've been having swede instead. Saying that, steamed (with skins on) and served with huge dollops of butter everywhere has one of the best effort-to-taste ratios of any food.

And that recipe looks not too bad either - I might have that with some fish tonight.
