Fantasy food vacation

Here are the rules: You can go anywhere in the world. You have an unlimited supply of money. You have two weeks to eat anywhere you like, at whatever restaurant, bar, or kiosk you can find. You will make a sacred vow to yourself not to worry for one second about getting fat.

My ideas:

1) London. Perhaps a bit obvious, but the idea here is to eat the best food you've ever eaten in your life, not to be different.
2) Lebanon.
3) Coastal Mexico, for the seafood.
4) The Mediterranean coast of France.

Where would you go to eat your heart out, and why?

Is the idea we can only limit ourselves to four choices? Because otherwise, fuck it, I'll just eat my way around the world.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

You have one choice, and two weeks. I'm just tossing out four ideas. Deliberation and narrowing comes later.

happy fun ball (kenan), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

hong kong - for mixture of great street food and fine dining.

or buenos aires for the steakhouses and hot argentinians.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

London? "a bit obvious"?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

I mean, maybe I've been out of the food industry for too long or something, but London is not one of the first names that would pop into my mind thinking about a fantasy food vacation hot spot.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Well, any big city full of fine dining would be "a bit obvious." I mean, it's not exotic.

happy fun ball (kenan), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

yeah london is like one of the last places i would go on a culinary fantasy vacation. london, tashkent, and mogadishu, tied.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I'd flip a coin for either Genoa or somewhere in Southeast Asia.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

phil, let's save money or find sugar daddies and go to hong kong.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Athens and Venice surely would be prime candidates, as far as cities go.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I live in London, so that's out so....
1)Barcelona - El Bulli & Commerc 24

2)Napa Valley - French Laundry

3)Back to Margaret River - Western Australia

4)a tie between Tokyo and road trip across the bbq belt in Texas

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

New Orleans
Tuscany
LA and environs (w/Jonathan Gold and Ned R as guides)
Buenos Aires (for the steakhouses and hot Argentines seconded and I'm not even that wild about beef)

also been reading great things about Spain/Barcelona and I'll do Paris or Provence on your corporate credit card.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

If it's barbeque you want, I actually might suggest Memphis over the entire state of Texas.

xpost NAWLINS, OF FUCKING COURSE!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

ooh... New Orleans is a great choice.

happy fun ball (kenan), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

phil, let's save money or find sugar daddies and go to hong kong.

awesome. the food in HK was so great. the cheapie food there beats the socks off of any other chinese food i've had anywhere at any price. though the street food in singapore is better and more diverse. but oh the dimsum and seafood in HK. the chicken feet too, i guess.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

unlike london where i dropped $40 for a pizza, a salad, and a coke!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

well, hopefully next trip to Dallas we'll be on a road trip to Nawlins...

The Texas things I want to see are places like Lockhart, Taylor and Elgin

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

This is where my ignorance comes out. I guess somewhere in India would be awesome. For food I've actually eaten much of, I'd go to Tbilisi and live solely on khinkali and kebabs.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

phil, i'm puzzled now as to how that happened because we got 5 pies from la porchetta yesterday for £30, or about £10 more than you paid.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

ok, £33.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

spain, greece, or argentina.

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I just had my New Orleans fantasy food vacation over the weekend. Copying from the diet support thread, in 36 hrs I ate:

2 shrimp po' boys
1 half shrimp/half catfish po' boy
1/2 french fry + beef gravy sandwich
5 crawfish-stuffed mushrooms
1 cube crawfish cheese
1 stuffed artichoke
2 lbs hot boiled crawfish
1 lb boiled shrimp
1 Charlieburger (best burger ever)
1/2 cheeseburger
a few chicken fingers
1/2 Gene's hot sausage po' boy

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

oh, you bastard. That sounds heavenly.

happy fun ball (kenan), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

1) Barcelona
2) New York
3) Brussels (that's much more personal preference than anything esle)
4) Las Vegas
5) Chicago
6) Rome

i dunno how that happenned either! geeta and i went to la porchetta and split a pizza, a salad, and had cokes each and it was about 20 pound. maybe they thought i was rich japanese tourist and overcharged me. oh well

ooh i heard the food in georgia is amazing. i want to go

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

4) Las Vegas

ooh, word.

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

The thing about Las Vegas is that most of the places aren't quite as good as their chefs' other projects, and you'll pay more for it than you would elsewhere, but goddamn you could do a week's worth of eating at different places just in one casino.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

bradley ogden bradley ogden bradley ogden!

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

but goddamn you could do a week's worth of eating at different places just in one casino.
there's a nobu in las vegas huh?

i guess you could also take a week vacation to eat at the time warner center in new york.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

even just the whole foods there -- it's mind-blowing.

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

mmm, that Bradley Ogden bleu cheese souffle. $175 kobe beef entree, on the other hand, is purely preying on the unsuspecing.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Berlin! I love a good schnitzel...and beer...

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I fully intend to go on a Belgian beer vacation someday, with the attendant good eats...
