Anyone else (still) suffer from these sometimes? Why oh why? Also, does anyone have any novel advice for dealing with 'em? petrol? prune juice?

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

yes I still have them. Of all the things I was looking forward to in my old age, lack of zits was number one on the list.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I have to use Proactiv twice a day just to control them. This side of Acutane(sp?), I don't think there's a 100% way of zapping them.

Organized Crime (Leee), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Still get 'em, but more like one or two per week or something. Makes me feel like I'm 19 still, I have no problem with that actually!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I get them occasionally, but I think (in my case) it's due to not changing my towels / bed sheets often enough. And being an oily greasy phreak.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I'd be more worried if I never got the occasional zit, really. I mean, out of the million body hairs a typical human body has, chances are one of them will grow inward and create one... (shaving in an area not used to being shaved, or waxing, or doing anything to alter certain parts of the body will do the same, or worse.) or one will eat/do something which makes the skin extra oily, which will cause the same too.

I just miss those "OMG! A ZIT! I SHOULD, LIKE, KILL MYSELF!" commercials like the OxyCutem' one.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

it just happens from time to time. the odd clogged pore is inevitable. usually, an over the counter gel/cream will dry out/disinfect the spot and speed healing.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

When I get a zit, I know something's up in my life. Stress, specifically. Dirt does it, too, but I don't let myself get that dirty unless I'm seriously, unhealthily preoccupied.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

From what I heard Acutane is very bad (lots of side effects).

nathalie in a bar under the sea (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I still get them. And no, I have no idea how to get rid of them. I've tried every soap and crap in the universe and they still LIVE ON!

mine got a LOT better when I quit my high-stress job.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

I get them every now and again, but its due to my inability to keep my goddamn hands away from my face..

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

I get them on my scalp still, which I don't completely mind. They give me something to pick at, and no one can see them, unlike when I was a teenage pimple zoo.

mr. coffee, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

If I get zits they are totally related to allergies (histamines), stress or hormones. Whatever doctors say about foods not relating to breakouts is A LIE. More than a square of chocolate, lots of saturated fat, overdoing wheat, spinach even = zits (for me anyway.) Exercise seems to keep them away too, I guess b/c it lowers stress (and sweating is cleansing?)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I still get them, which is only fair because I had perfect skin in high school. There's a Conservation of Skin-Angst Principle at work here.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I've got one right now that is pissing me right off. Mine are very infrequent, which makes them that much more annoying when they do show up.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

still have 'em...

kingfish, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

My skin got like, loads better there for a while when I started using tea tree oil, but I think my pores got immune to it, because I'm breaking out all the time again.

EVERYTHING makes me get zits. Makeup, washing my face, not washing my face, um, eating.

Occasionally, always in the same place - side of my nose or either side of bottom lip. I get them when I eat too much chocolate.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

geoff, i tried to use the acne.org regimen before and it just made me become a giant skin flake!

If possible, get your doctor to prescribe BenzaClin topical gel - it's Benzol peroxide + clindamycin - way better than anything else for spot treatment (and all over if necessary), *especially* if your skin is sensitive to everything. Neutrogena's sensitive skin combination skin cleanser is really good too, better than, um, that one they're always going on about, Cetaphil, I find. And, makeup-wise, Prescriptives camoflage cream is great (I even know guys who use it too! That's how well it blends in.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

haha i don't do that regimen (or any other, i don't have the will) but the site looked so well done and well meaning...

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I found that tea tree oil based things worked okay in the past.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I still get some of the f*ckers.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Whatever doctors say about foods not relating to breakouts is A LIE.

Exactly. Doctors always seem to want to label this a myth, but me, when I get lazy and have a few too many fast food cheeseburgers for lunch, I WILL get zits. I guess everyone's skin is different, though.

Anyway, my favorite method for killing zits is aloe vera gel. I've seen some zits fade away overnight after being treated with aloe vera. Many recommend getting it directly from an aloe vera plant (cheap and easy to grow on your own; also i've seen aloe vera leaves for sale in some supermarket produce sections), but I've gotten great results from the Fruit of the Earth brand of aloe vera gel. It's very inexpensive (about $3 a bottle) and can be found in almost any drugstore and most grocery stores. In the spring and summer, lots of stores stock it next to the suntan lotion because one of the selling points of aloe gel is that it's good for sunburn irritation. It's good for healing any skin irritaton, though.

When I have a breakout, I smear a lot of it all over my face before bed and sleep with it on. During the day when I go out, I rub a small amount only on the infected areas. The gel is clear, hasn't got much of a smell, isn't drying, and a small amount will get absorbed by your skin quickly so no one will know you have it on.

the girl at Lush last night told me my skin isn't *too* bad. :/

:/

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I used to get about 1-2 a week, large red bumps on my face, not the little-rash like ones, and since I stopped drinking milk (swtiched to Rice Dream) about 3 months ago I have been pimple-free, except for one on my jawline today, the little minx. I think it's from the phone at work.
There's also an herbal pill that you can take (I've seen it at Walgreens) that's supposed to help.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I more or less control them with prescriptions, but they're noticeably worse when I don't sleep enough or on a regular schedule. I think it's more related to that than diet.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, stress is probably the #1 zit-maker. I actually have a wee one today, which is probably due to me trying to subsist on 5-6 hours of fitful sleep a night.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...

Oh my god, I woke up this morning with two huge cysts! I haven't gotten a cyst in years. I'm freaking out. At least they're not the painful kind. I don't know, maybe it's a bug bite, I left my windows open last night.

any theories on why people, say, 40 and older still seem to get pimples yet those from previous generations don't? something in our collective diet?

()ops (()()ps), Sunday, 15 May 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

i would say it's due to diet, yes
