check these screenshots for the upcoming "2 Days to Vegas"

Appears to be a next-gen version of GTA, or at least really good-looking clone--

from here:
"2 Days To Vegas" is a story driven 3rd person action-adventure game. The thrill-a-minute story is crammed full of car chases, shootouts and unexpected twists, to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the game. The action is set in several major cities across the USA and takes place during an intense 48 hour period. This game has it all, a gripping story of contemporary gangster life combined with thrilling car chase action and an intense race against the clock...

the cars and things in the universe look deceptively real- but the people? uh uh, no way. we're not that close yet.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

i wonder how long before skin can be simulated as easily...

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

Heh that websites almost as bad as my other 'alfs games dev company's website (which is shit horrible).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Simulating humans is always very difficult because our brains are wired to read expressions etc so subtley, that anything artificial immediately looks fake on a really base level.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

but still, with that pick-up truck photo, you half-expect to see a "Heartbeat of America" tagline overlaying it along with a Chevy logo...

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

This is the same reason why most of the photorealist painters paint humans from a distance if at all.

rogers broseph (deangulberry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

still, tis only a matter of time....

I don't think it's limited to expressions. I think the whole thing looks like a video game. I am confused as to what this thread is about, actually. Does this game look better than the last one?

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that looks like a totally real plastic toy car. Awesome

Øystein (Øystein), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

The cop looks alright though. I'd be skeptical based on these screenshots though, unless all of the characters in the game move around really slowly.

not here, Thursday, 28 April 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

everything's kind of shiney and reflective. looks cool to me.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

To avoid the shiny effect you need to use subsurface scatter but this effect brings current graphics hardware to it's knees.

The Uncanny Valley

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

oh, i was saying i liked how it was all shiney.

it looks like when you get a new prescription and put on the new glasses/contacts for the first time.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

we're probably not as far off from complete photorealism as people think. f1nch3r has secretly been aiming at something like this for a while now, unfortunately to do it right still requires truckloads of money.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

(and i mean that in the context of a feature)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

honestly, what is the point? I've always thought it represented a stunning lack of creativity in regards to new technology, to try and make it mimic other technologies (or, in this case, the appearance of reality). We can ALREADY WATCH THINGS THAT LOOK TOTALLY REAL - it's called film. Why don't they spend their time making the technology show us things that are NOT possible with other mediums....

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

but still, with that pick-up truck photo, you half-expect to see a "Heartbeat of America" tagline overlaying it along with a Chevy logo...

Well, those trucks in the commercials are quite likely to be CGI as well.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Jar Jar Binx looks better.
