How cheap can I get a not bad working laptop in the UK?

Less than 200 quid is difficult.

Also check Loot/Micromart and your local paper.

A P3-400 with 256MB will run XP okay for surfing/music playing, look for integrated network if you are plugging into a wired router.

Try to get inside a house, they are warm and often have TV.
