Ornithologists swear they've found an ivorybill woodpecker.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The ivory-billed woodpecker -- widely believed to be extinct and whose last confirmed sighting was 60 years ago -- was apparently in Arkansas as recently as last April, according to a research paper released Thursday.

The U.S. Department of the Interior said it has a video of the bird, and it plans a news conference later today to release information.

I hope there's more than one.

It better not be going "Huh-huh-huh-HUH-huh!"

In a small way, this is fantastic news. Now that it has been found again, I hope there might be something that could be done to help its numbers grow - but that seems unlikely, since we know almost nothing about them.

During a banding this chick crawled up the ornithologists arm and perched on his hat. Aw.

The question now is, can neocons spin this into evidence they're actually helping the environment? Or that there's no global warming, or evolution doesn't exist?

Obvious question: can we eat it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

No, but we can shoot it for sport. Score!

Could someone explain to me why we make such a fuss over endangered species? I mean, I'm all for biodiversity and all, but really, I don't think you were missing this particular woodpecker all that much, were you? Who gives a shit if they died off.

same old shit (dymaxia), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

AHA! I WAS RIGHT, HERE THEY COME!

Because if we're lucky it might peck your eyes out.
