they're finally tearing down the long-abandoned dixie square mall in harvey, illinois -- possibly in the next few days. if you're brave and have a camera, get down there and document whatever you can before the place is gone forever (and replaced with shiny new retail stores). do it for jake and elwood.

(i'm glad there are development plans for the property; i'm just a land-use/urban-exploration geek, is all.)

stop by the record store while you're at it:

My parents are in town, maybe we should make this a family road trip.

Albeit a highly confusing one for my parents.

Shit. You need a car for that one, I'm not sure which weekend buses go there.

That thing has been sitting there forever. My high school bus used to go past it.

Anyone who goes down there should be careful. I've been cut up before, poking around in abandoned sites. I always think of Richard Nickel and shudder.

It's too bad - a lot of the graphics and signs do probably have some historical value.

definitely -- watch out for rust, asbestos, vermin, bats, as well as the expected structural weaknesses that occur when buildings incur sustained weather damage. i've been talking to someone who tried to climb an escalator in the mall and fell into a cold dark puddle of godknowswhat, and she got fiberglass splinters in her legs.

but if you exercise common sense, you should be fine.

and this is urgent and key: bring a flashlight.
