I'm compiling for my own purposes a not-at-all-comprehensive calendar of interesting summer things happening in the more-or-less Red States of America. Arts events, competitions, rodeos, whatever. I already know some of these things, but I want to know more. If you live in these places or know of them, lemme know what's happening.

For example, I know Bonnaroo. And Belle Chere in Asheville. And, yes, the KY Derby. But what else? Spelling bees? Quilting bees? Hog-slaughtering contests? I M curious.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 29 April 2005 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 29 April 2005 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 29 April 2005 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I just realized that I am now in a Red State.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

o and i'm usually miserable at these things (it's hot and crowded), but the lineup for music midtown, another festival thing in atlanta, has a decent lineup this year. white stripes, montgomery gentry, ciara, pixies, def leppard, lou reed, bobby valentino, trace adkins, common, darryl worley, interpol, biz markie, devo, alan jackson, public enemy, john fogerty, whodini, jo dee messina, the killers, joan jett, tift merritt, black eyed peas, bloc party, mc lyte, robert randolph, tom petty and - go figure - doug e. fresh & slick rick.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

There are way too many things for me to mention, but here's a helpful link for you to click on that might be able to educate you a bit on what's going on.

Also: Concerts by Machine Head, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Lawrence, Gipsy Kings, Manhattan Transfer, Moody Blues, Judas Priest, the Vans Warped Tour, Cafe Tacuba, Bleeding Through, and John Legend. And something called "1964 the Tribute".

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

hm well Beat Me In St Louis is coming up I guess, and then there's always the state fair.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

adam (adam), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

no, we're not gabbneb. my parents' us rep is a gop-er, and they live in the most "liberal, weird, democrat" part of louisville.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i'm not talking CDs, necessarily, and dunno bout Louisville, but assume Atlanta and Asheville are more blue than red.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

These are all good, thanks. More! And maybe some of them are in "blue" areas, but that's part of the point of this calendar thing I'm assembling, to highlight again how silly it is to make broad assumptions about entire sections of the country.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I live on a blue street in a red neighborhood in a blue county located inside a red state. I have no idea what to tell you.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear ya. I grew up in a red suburb of a blue city in a red region of a blue state.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's lavender where I live.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)
