The Ultimate Nerd Characteristics

You know, the thing, more than anything else, that would identify someone as being a gigantic nerd. I'd say buying video game soundtracks. Like special orchestral versions of the songs you hear in Dead or Alive Ultimate, that kind of thing.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 29 April 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

Making number "base" jokes, like "omg your girlfriend is 26? If we used base 14, she'd only be..."

I guess that cover binary as well.

I'm not too good at this.

Well then paint me pink and call me nerdy too! ;D Yer a cutie ;P

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

I remember being at a party where a roomful of people (approx 30) were watching two guys snap on each other with escalating levels of brutal mama jokes. Finally, one guy fumbled, and the other guy said, "Ooh, that was lame; in fact, that was asymptotically approaching lame." The whole room fell out, then froze, because EVERYONE GOT THE JOKE.

Not only video game soundtracks, but symphonic concert programs of Final Fantasy music entitled "Dear Friends" where images of the game are projected behind the musicians and people attend in costume. (NB I know two people who drove 3 hours to go to this.)

Actually, I should have posted one with a bolo tie.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I went to high school with a guy who wore a tie-dyed shirt with a picture of a wolf or dolphin or something on the front (you know the kind) and "I Suffer from CRS: Can't Remember Shit" silk screened on the back. Every day. Why would anyone make that?

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Other classic nerd shirts from HS were:

Picture of the galaxy with "You are here"

Table of Elements

Washington, DC Insect Zoo (that always seemed like the most tasteful and understated nerd shirt)

"The Real Heavy Metal", followed by pictures of plutonium, uranium, etc.

Yesterday someone said this about a guy I know who is writing a thesis on Greek drama: "His handwriting is illegible! When he wrote me a note, I couldn't make it out, and it was unsigned! I only knew it was from him because he wrote alphas for his a's." That's awesome.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

"No wait I get it - its the multiple CLOCKS, ISNT IT. "

Wrong! It's the plastic cover still on the lamp! No body cares about the clocks or the zit. And wots up with the Tronguy? That just scares me!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

oh there's this big fat greasy haired kid in the class i TA for, he wrote a paper on the titanic. they were supposed to speculate on TEH FUTURE of media technology, and someone said [something] that had "never been thought of before" and he piped up, first thing he's said all term, "not on star trek". after abt 10 secs of dead silence the whole room fell out lethally. it was like a john huges movie, it was absolutely cinematically timed. i felt so bad, even tho i can't stand him.

he's a nerd.

you can talk for hours about how much "The Screen Savers" sucks since Tech TV merged with G4.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Saturday, 30 April 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Thinkgeek used to sell a t-shirt with a quote from me on it.
That's gotta count for something, right?

So was I!!!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 30 April 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I have several friends (who are like, network engineers and the like) who have ThinkGeek tshirts such as "I read your email" and "Phear me for I am root" or wtfever they say.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 30 April 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Strangely, one of said guys is in all other respects totally non-nerd; he's a very good looking young guy into deep house and funk music who goes to dance parties and stuff.

Using words like "cool" when posting to a cosplay thread on an internet forum.

I guess that cover binary as well.

There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who read binary, and those who don't.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 30 April 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

That binary quote was printed out and stuck on the wall of my high school computer lab. We also had one nextstep machine, but it was locked in a wooden case. Only one super nerd had the key.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Saturday, 30 April 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

The day I met my current girlfriend, I started an excel file...

in this file, i write a sentence or two on what happened between us during that day, and the overall percentage of how i think things are between us

out of these percentages, i have a graph, with average percentage on it too

in addition, i list if i saw her on that day, if she came to visit, and if we had sex with check boxes

out of those checkboxes, i have another graph, showing which weeks had the most visits

i also list how many times we've ever had sex and done other stuff in that field

also have a count of total number of visits

i've been doing this daily for 152 days now

she has no idea.

that green bar is when we started going out officially too

only 2 weeks after meeting her xfd

oh yeah, green/red bars at the side of the dates indicate really, really good days vs days where we were gonna end it

so yeah

it didn't mean to get this big

it started off small

but snowballed so bad

i'm ashamed of it

I bet you're really good at that Virtually Date Ariane game.

Iz not mine.

Here's the legend, posted much later

visits/ meetups = put a cross here if you met up, bold it and make it dark green if you had sex
# = day number
Date = the date
Day = the day of the week
Description = few sentences of things that happened between you in that day
% = percentage of how well you think that day went
Score = orgasm tally
Chance of visit = your percentage prediction of a visit
Period = block to show your guess of when her period happens
Period error = your margin of error in days
