I never thought I'd say this, but I'm sort of rooting for the Suns now. The alternative?

A Pistons - Spurs finals.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm desperately clinging to the hope that the wizards can make it past the woeful bulls.

burna (burna), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

A Pistons-Spurs series would rule! The games would be so close and competitive, every game would be decided in the final minute. Er, on second thought, that would give me kidney stones if I had to sit through seven of those.

The Father of Honky-Crunk (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm desperately clinging to the hope that the wizards can make it past the woeful bulls.

woeful?? the bulls have the third best record in the eastern conference (which isnt saying much, i realize, but still). speaks volumes that they've beaten the wizards twice even without curry and deng.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

bill walton shut up i stab you

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I going to have to put up with this shit from Luke Walton in 20 or 30 years? I already have to put up with him acting as if he's some sort of "leader". Fuckknob.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Um. Can an admin help me with the title misspelling?

*Commissioner

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 30 April 2005 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like the Sixers got punk'd by Korver tonight

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 1 May 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I'd feel a lot better about the Mavericks chances if they could have dominated one game or even half of a game. McGrady and Yao going dry for the last half of the fourth every time might not be a good bet.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 1 May 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

That's been a really weird series.... Watching Yao and Nowitzski disappear for long stretches while McGrady and then Finley and Terry carry their teams. I still think it's going to go to 7.

Oh, and Yanc3y, did you notice that they finally called some moving picks? And it directly led to the Rockets losing momentum in game 4? That's why I hate when the refs make that call. Let 'em play unless it's a particularly nasty moving screen! To hell with Cuban and his rule book and army of stat geeks. (Said in my best John Kruk voice.)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

when I first turned it on, the team had Harris, Finley, Stackhouse, Daniels and Henderson on the floor. This ain't Nellie's team of yore. Also not a lineup that encourages my hope for continued success.

Dampier's really earning that $70mln, isn't he? Is it too early to start calling him the black Shawn Bradley?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

The Pacers really stunk up the joint on Saturday night. Besides the lopsided score, losing to the Celts without Walker at home, when you can take control of the series is crushing.

Things do not look too good now and yet it looked pretty promising a few days ago.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

that's the pacers for you! they always be breakin my heart!

christ almighty. i want to die. rockets please don't do this to me!!!

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

plus they should AT LEAST take away van gundy's fine after those bad calls in the 4th. really just terrible. that was the damn game right there.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Mark Cuban'll just have his video nerds make a greatest hits reel of blown calls against the Mavs throughout the game. Foul shots were pretty even (40 for Houston, 34 for Dallas), so I'd guess that the bad breaks went both ways. We just notice them more in the last minutes.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

point taken. but still it's rich to see David Stern making vague threats against van gundy when the refs are calling a horrible game right in front of his smug face.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

(sorry. this was a rough loss)

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Nice comeback by the Wizards, tho.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

ugh

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

if mavs-rockets goes 7 games it is gonna be epic. one of the best series i have ever seen so it would be a shame if it didn't.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

last minute of Sac-Seattle game 5: How the hell do you let Ray Allen or ANYONE waltz down the middle of the lane surrounded by 4 defenders and simply lay it up? I dunno but it's AWESOME. Northern Californites in the office can wipe their smug Laker-hating grins off as they try to defend their soft, pathetic first-round patsies. At least the Lakers have the lottery to look forward to! Uh yeah, that's it, that's a good thing.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

awesome now they're 'Gone Fishing' with Kenny

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

OMG BULLS GAME OMG

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

shit, never mind.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

I love how one of the "I Love the NBA" ads is T-Mac dunking on Shawn Bradley... the way it's edited, it freezes with Bradley in that "oh shit no" cringe and then it's like, "NBA PLAYOFFS!" Which is totally true because that had to be one of the greatest things in the playoffs thus far.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

aaron w, wtf long time no see. can i come over and watch game 6 of bulls/wizards? you going to fuse-in? arent there any hot law students you should be setting me up with?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, Robert Horry is such a champ.

The Father of Honky-Crunk (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Melo has the face of a 14 yr old girl.

Also: go Nuggies!

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

OMG the announcer just yelled "Go! Go little fella!" at Boykin!!!

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 5 May 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

ok that wiz/bulls game 5 was insanity. i kept tuning out and turning around to see chicago within 12, 10, whatever again...what an agonizingly slow comeback. they really should have stolen that game, but arenas was just cold as ice sticking that jumper in to win it. so smooth- he seemed to know EXACTLY how much time he had to work with and let it go with 4/10ths of a second left.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

i see how you chicago fans are just keeling over with heart attacks at this team now

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

yes! also thank you tivo back-5-seconds-button for allowing me to watch that twenty times in a row

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

ANTOINE!!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

he is shortening my lifespan as i type

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

I love Robert Horry. And Tony Parker. And Tony Parker must've DEFINITELY gotten "a little sumthin' sumthin'" from his Desperate Housewife girlfriend after that game. ;) (I guess Eva Longoria's not as much of an evil talisman as people were saying before!) (I stole that "a little sumthin' sumthin'" thing from MY MOM, BTW.)

Next up -- Spurs vs. Seattle. And I hopehopehope the Spurs don't tank it the way they tanked it the two times they lost to the Sonics in the regular season. If they keep their focus, they will find it smooth sailing to the Western Conference championship, and then we'll just have to see how things go from there.

Goodbye Indian Summer (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I like how the players have decided to pay tribute to their fallen brothers in the nhl by growing playogff beards. particularly stack, battier, and tony parker.

Sym Sym (sym), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I missed the Houston - Dallas game. I know you can't build a team around constant last-second heroics from T-Mac ... but damn it's fun to watch.

Also, I gotta say, this (misspelled) thread title is looking pretty prescient in light of the Van Gundy debacle. [preens]

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 6 May 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Also, given the lack of constant background chatter on the "wtf is up with yao" question, seems like ya'll have reached a consensus ... care to share?

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 6 May 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't know who to root for in the Houston/Dallas series! Normally I'd go for Houston over Dallas any day of the week (north vs. south in the Great State Of), but Dallas is coached by one of my favorite former Spurs of all time, i.e. the Little General! (I've met him before, BTW -- sweet as pie.) Anyway -- so, I'm totally stuck here. Dallas? Houston? Houston? Dallas? Or is this a moot point by now? (I confess to not having kept up with that part of the conference championship.)

Goodbye Indian Summer (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 6 May 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

you gotta love this:

"It was like there were phantoms out there fouling," Stackhouse said. "Normally you know who fouls. But tonight we were looking around trying to figure out who they called it on. Maybe everyone wanted to see a Game 7."

Avery Johnson's post-game interviews after losses are insanely entertaining:
"Maybe I need to go crazy. Maybe I should go crazy. Maybe that will help," Johnson said in a rambling postgame tirade. "This series is about basketball, not all the other stuff. We lost the game. We don't make excuses. The game was called fairly pretty much ... there's no excuses, no complaints, no nothing."

ryan (ryan), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Lukas I thought this was a pretty good take on the WTF YAO question: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2005/columns/story?columnist=bucher_ric&id=2053707

ryan (ryan), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

If the Bulls win tonight I will eat my pants. with a smile.
Why did mofos in the media have to rag on the Wizards lack of defense and passing, prompting them to go "oh yeah, I guess we should, y'know, play this game called basketball rather than just taking a bazillion 20ft jumpers."??

()ops (()()ps), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I just got home in time to see the Pistons Championship specials from 89 and 90 on ESPN. SO awesome when Lambeer is yelling, "COME ON LET'S FINISH THIS RIGHT NOW!"

(Hey Phil... I have one more week of exams and then I'm returning to the human race for the summer!)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 6 May 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

dude how long has the score been 74-68. cmon i dare somebody to score.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

and espn gives me the answer: 3:55! and still going as we enter q4!

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

whoops. there go the bulls. next year should be interesting.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone see T-Mac grab four or five offensive rebounds just now? And Houston still couldn't score?

Lukas (lukas), Sunday, 8 May 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Steve never sounds quite as stoned as I expect.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 8 May 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Boston sure did lay an egg tonight.... And now we get to endure two weeks of "brawl" chatter. The thing is that Detroit and Indiana *hated* each other even before the stupid brawl. But, looks like some great second round match-ups:

SA v. Seattle: I think this'll be a very good one, with Seattle giving San Antonio a lot of trouble
Phoenix v. Dallas (assuming they don't choke): Steve Nash versus his old team, run and gun to the Xtreme
Detroit v. Indiana: The obvious
and, uh, Miami v. Washington.... which will be over in 4

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 8 May 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Well in Rasheed's case it's true. I don't understand why he shoots so little.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

chauncey is the new reggie
-- Sym Sym (shmuel...), June 22nd, 2005 10:55 PM.

How do you figure? considering one is a Finals MVP and the other is ...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

SHEED! Did anyone see him in the press conference, calmly explaining that he felt no pressure while wearing his championship belt over his shoulder? Classic. Also, it's pretty amazing what he's doing against a a guy a lot of people think is the best power forward ever.

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

haha did you hear the quote of 'sheed, when asked whether he shot better with his left or his right, saying "both of those bad boys are pretty good". bad boys?! BAD BOYS??!!!?? I didn't think people actually talked like that.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Rasheed has earned the right to say "Both of those bad boys are pretty good" if he wants to.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

Nobody can stop this Pistons team when they all want a game.. I'm convinced. I hope the stones are dogs on Thurs, that'd be great...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

WHY IS CHAUNCEY ON THE BENCH, WHAT HAPPENED

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

TWO FOULS!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Manu also picked up a deuce.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

calling a game seven this fucking close is complete horseshit. wtf???????

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

I MEAN, THIS ISN'T A FUCKING BASKETBALL GAME IT'S A GODDAMN REFEREE CAMP. FUCK YOU CRAWFORD!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

I thought Crawford wasn't supposed to ref this game. What happened?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

The NBA playoffs have been shaped by the whims of their referees' egos for years ... I probably don't even notice it anymore :(

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm watching on a crappy little TV, I can barely tell who's who much less who's fouling.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

I expect the Spurs to make some good adjustments in the paint during halftime.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry guys, channeled an ABC commentator for a sec.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

I wish, Hubie Brown is way cooler than me.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

ESPN should learn to spell.

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm a bit nervous about detroit's foul situation

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

McDyess totally suckered Duncan in on that last possession.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

At any point in this game, have more than 30 seconds gone by without a whistle?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Well it was a nice run for Detroit, wunnit?

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Prince seems a step or two too slow.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

If I was Rasheed Wallace I would be clawing my teammates eyes out.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Did Hubie Brown actually just call Robert Horry "Mr. Intangibles"? Does that make Ginobili A-Rod?

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

This is officially one of the worst ref'd games I've ever watched.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

that block and that drive....man, Detroit, try a little harder!

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Damn.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 24 June 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Shit. That was tough. San Antonio played just that much better. Billups sitting early was a killer.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA SON!

Bruce Bwned (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

I just figured out my only stake in this series was to see Rasheed lose. It is no less awesome.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

Most of the "basketball fans" in the country missed an awesome series.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

I just want to take this opportunity to say that the Spurs couldn't have won their first (1999) championship without the person who now coaches the Pistons, i.e. Larry Brown. Larry Brown was largely responsible for creating the force that was able to clinch the franchise's first NBA championship, and for this and for many other reasons that I'm sure Gregg Popovich could tell you, I wish that Larry Brown could share in the glory as well. He deserves to be lauded.

I would also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to a person who weathered my craziness when the Spurs won their second championship back in 2003. I had only been posting on ILX for a few months and I was (already) involved in one of those AIM chats from long ago when I went crazy over the 2003 game 6 win over the Knicks. Dan Perry was really gracious in allowing me to be insane and hyper and like a little child in that chat, and I really want to thank him for being so kind and giving to me, to allow me to be as crazy as I was.

Pistons fans -- your team played incredibly well. It's just that the Spurs, and the whole of the city of San Antonio, hungered for this championship more. We are all hungry for something good to happen to us. We all needed something like this.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm bummed for Detroit, but I'm happy for Duncan.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Matt, please tell me you stuck around long enough to see Greg Simmons interview Eva Longoria AND to see Tony Parker and the "French Mafia" do that crazy shouty chanty type thing in French!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 June 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

i don't really understand this thread, but i guess the spurs won, huh?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 June 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

x-post

I saw nuffink. :(

Bruce Bwned (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 24 June 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

I liked the pre-game Tim Duncan Suicide Watch. Bill Walton acted like the guy had spent two days sitting in the corner mumbling to himself.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 24 June 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Bill Walton can kiss my ass. Or -- even better, Bill Walton can kiss CHARLES BARKLEY'S ass. On national TV. No, wait -- Walton's not fit to lick Barkley in that area where the sun doesn't shine.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 June 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Al Michaels, OTOH -- Al Michaels is totally cool. If a bit dim.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 June 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

Bill Walton >>>>> Al Michaels though
braying hippie dipshit vs. douchebag dilettante republican=ez call

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Bill Walton is basically Ted Baxter who's kind of in on the joke, when I realized this he became a lot more entertaining. His frontrunner-worship makes me nauseous sometimes but I can tell he does it in part to piss people off.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh no! I would've worshipped Al Michaels years ago had you told me he was a Republican! Ha! Nowadays -- eh, so he's naive to boot. Okay. So. Hm. But why the "douchebag dilettante" comments?

If Bill Walton does what he does "in part to piss people off", it certainly works. But oh well. He was just one of the mosquitos in the backyard, and mercifully they all won't be heard from again for awhile.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

The fact that both Dee and my mom have expressed their grievances with Bill Walton this series supports my dynamite theory: women be hatin' Bill Walton.

Bruce Bwned (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I hate Luke Walton more than Bill Walton.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

xxpost 'dilletante' cos he doesn't betray any knowledge or love for the game and calls NBA games at an NFL pace(which most of them do on the national level but he doesn't embellish the limp play-by play with anything interesting, at least Costas has his wealth of ultimately pointless stories, Marv is good for some half hearted banter, etc. Al is just along for the ride). 'douchebag' cos he peppered some of his NFL commentary with surreptitious anti-Kerry asides last year, which is just like, a bad thing.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

MOTHER f. damn it. When Rip got called for the charge it was over. Not that I am blaming the refs. I am not. I am just saying. For the record, that particular call sounded the death knell for a Detroit team that did not defend well when it counted. Hell of a game though. Props to the Spurs. I really think Ginobili just took over. He's my MVP; not Duncan. And honestly, Spurs don't win this one without Game 5; hence, they don't anything without Horry.

It's crazy, I used to love Horry when he was a Rocket; I totally rooted for the Rocks (loved Akeem; hated the Shaq-led Mag.) But screw it, I officially hate the guy. Helll of a player, though.

COngrats, San Antonio.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 24 June 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

no the death knell was Chauncey having a wee bit too much self-confidence and attempting that ill-advised 3ptr. that Bowen smothered.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 June 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)
