***: I've really screwed up my computer. I did a whole system restore. But I kept the old windows xp somehow and it tries to run it before it runs this new one. Also, my audio hardware is not working so I can't play any music. Any advice you can give me? I'm so computer un-savvy :-D
saucerpilot1947: hhahahahahaha damn.....um im not really too savvy myself, thats hard for me to figure out. i dont know, im sorry:-(
***: that's ok
saucerpilot1947: um, tell me more about whats going on, maybe i can help you
saucerpilot1947: when did this start happenening
saucerpilot1947: explain what happened as best as you can rember step by step
***: Well, I feel stupid telling you.
***: don't make fun of me.
saucerpilot1947: dont worry! believe me i've done some stupid things with computers in my time.
saucerpilot1947: i wouldnt make fun of you for anything like that
***: Ok...
saucerpilot1947: whats going on now?
***: I had the irvs...whatever on my computer. a spyware program, so I installed hijackthis and got really annoyed b/c I could not delete the desktop.exe. So I went on a rampage and deleted EVERYTHING.
***: I'm lucky I've recovered this much back.
saucerpilot1947: ohhhh ok. hmmm, i would not know exactly what to tell you. were you trying to reinstall windows entirely then?
saucerpilot1947: (bear with me if i seem dense, just trying to make sure so i can try to think of how to tackle thisif i can)
***: Yes
saucerpilot1947: ok. and you were unsuccessful?
***: Well, not all the way.
***: I'm online again
***: Audio is just busted.
saucerpilot1947: hmmmmmm damn, you might just ahve to get all your memory wiped clean and reinstall evrything again. hhow did you try to delete evrything, like where did you delete it from?
***: hijackthis
***: It shows files running. And I wiped it all out. setup.exe, ability to start applications, no pictures.
***: nada

She may need to reinstall drivers for her soundcard. She'll have to look in control panels->system->device manager and in there is should tell her what soundcard she has installed. Then she can do a google search for the drivers.

well, i can't tell exactly what is going on from that chat but you can change the default OS by right clicking my computer -->properties-->advanced tab-->startup and recovery settings button-->default OS pulldown menu

though i'm not sure because if there were in fact two copies of XP then you'd get a screen at bootup to choose between them... and there's no indication that is what's happening
