Does this sound like a sketchy way to make $10,000?

Someone you know, or at least a friend of your friend, needs the green card, you'd like the cash. Has anyone ever done this or known someone who has? Do you absolutely have to live with the person in order to maintain the illusion? Are you likely to get caught, and are there severe penalties for you if you do? Does it take an enormous amount of deceit in order to do the things necessary to keep up the lie?

you have to live with them, certainly. i imagine it's quite a substancial risk, so unless you rally need the 10k i'd advise to keep clear. the immigration debt will be pretty wise to any tricks you might have in mind to appear genuine

Simple answer. Yes. The US government looks upon fraud with a jaundiced eye. Not only do you need to live together, but you must act convincingly married around the neighbors. Ask for $50,000, at least.
