Hey Canada, I'm Still Not Sure How I Feel About Red Green

I'll keep you updated, Canada. The first time I saw it, within 5 seconds of watching, and not knowing what I was watching, I said to myself: This is from Canada! And I do like to immerse myself in comedy from exotic lands. On the other hand, sometimes Red reminds me of that creepy L.A. preacher with the beard that just died. What was Smith & Smith like? I read on the internet that it was on t.v for 9 years! And I had never heard of it! And you are right next door! Well, anyway, you know I love you. I'm gonna give it a few more tries (It is on at odd times though.) Bye for now. Yours truly, Scott "London (Ontario's record stores are) Calling (Me)" Seward

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

i went to university in london ontario with red green's son. he was the ex of a girl i was quasi-seeing. he drove a jaguar that wz mounted on 4x4 tires. he was an alright guy, i guess. that car wz ridiculous though.

Scott,

Don't sweat it.

Red Green >>>>> Tim Allen

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I was in Victoria over Xmas, and I saw tons of Red Green posters for sale at the poster shop inside the Bay Centre in downtown... this just after seeing his show on the Comedy Channel in my hotel room... it wasn't as bad as, say, Mad TV.. but I felt I had to be born before 1960 to think it was funny, or something.

Red Green himself is far more pleasant and funny on the show than that FREAKY FEY NERDY GUY WHO GIVES ME THE FUCKING CREEPS.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Between 1996 and 1999, FREAKY FEY NERDY GUY WHO GIVES ME THE FUCKING CREEPS was one 4 out 5 Canadian-produced TV shows.

Huk-L, Monday, 2 May 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

?? He was an 80% TV show? Or are you saying he was on 80% of all Canadian TV shows?

Why?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I just cannot watch the Red Green Show. And CBC is one of 6 channels I have, half of which are French. (And, speaking of, comedy shows from the exotic land of Quebec are all very wtf, pos in a better way than Red Green and creepy sidekick.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Canadian tv in incestuous use of actors, shocker...
xpost

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

so bad. and yeah that guy was EVERYWHERE

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Between 1996 and 1999, FREAKY FEY NERDY GUY WHO GIVES ME THE FUCKING CREEPS was one 4 out 5 Canadian-produced TV shows.

Followed by HEARTWARMING PRAIRIE PERIOD DRAMA THAT NO CANADIAN ACTUALLY WATCHES, BUT IS HUGE ON U.S. CABLE .

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

You know who's been EVERYWHERE in the past couple of years? Callum Keith Rennie. I watched Whiskey Echo last night and he was there too! Ah, but I like him fine. And he was in Twitch City, so he has all kinds of points in my book.

CKR was also creepy male Cylon in the Battlestar Galactica mini-series (don't know if he's in the ongoing series).

Quebec comedies are awesome. I love Un Gars, Un Fille and La P'Tit Vie.

Huk-L, Monday, 2 May 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

.....Red Green is unwatchable. Or at least it was the last time I saw it. Which was, uh, 6 years or so years ago.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I have only seen Red Green while totally fucked up on Robitussin with a pal who is arguably a canuck and definitely a canuck fetishist.

The show, as I remember it from that state, is evil evil evil.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

HEARTWARMING PRAIRIE PERIOD DRAMA THAT NO CANADIAN ACTUALLY WATCHES, BUT IS HUGE ON U.S. CABLE .

What show is this?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Jake And the Kid?

Huk-L, Monday, 2 May 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Maybe not evil. Just bad.
Please don't judge our culture based on this man. He's like the Bryan Adams of Canadian comedy.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

xpost : I was thinking Road To Avonlea and things of that ilk.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

At least you guys have Kids in the Hall.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

HAD :(

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

He's like the Bryan Adams of Canadian comedy.

Maybe more like the Gordon Lightfoot of Canadian comedy?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

HAD :(

...yeah. sorry about that.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Do people in Canada think Red Green is sexy?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Who what what?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Exactly.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Red Green on right.

FREAKY FEY NERDY GUY WHO GIVES ME THE FUCKING CREEPS on left.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

But look at his HILARIOUS WACKY MUSICO-SCIENCE INSTRUMENT. It's FUNNY.

Get one funny-bone, eh?! GOD.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Freaky Fey guy looks like Huk if Huk were as extroverted as he is introverted.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

the cbc's unfunny comedy streak is a modern marvel

jones (actual), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

You never caught Kenny vs. Spenny, did you.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

holy crap i loved that show.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I tried SO HARD to like Red Green. Really I did. I watched loads of episodes.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

the one good thing i saw on red green was when he tried to install a cube style air conditioner in his van by ineffectively duct taping it to the drivers window. i gather that they use the duct tape gag a lot, but that one might have seemed ok because it's like, the only time i've watched red green.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Which one cheated all the time again?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

FREAKY FEY NERDY GUY WHO GIVES ME THE FUCKING CREEPS dead center.
http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2002-05-23/stage_comedyfeature-3.jpg

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Ack. OK, I take back what I said re Huk.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

Which one cheated all the time again?
I believe it was Kenny.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Freaky Fey guy looks like Huk if Huk were as extroverted as he is introverted.
hey!

Kenny cheated all the time.
Kenny vs. Spenny had previously made a really terrible documentary about the two of them pitching their mob comedy gonzo-stylee at the Toronto FilmFest. Pretty dreary, and actually turned me the whole Special Cdn Section at Rogers Video for two years.
I didn't notice it was the same guys for a long time. Probably because KvS is good. I think it's still in production, but for Bravo or something? Who hasn't shown it yet.
I know it was on the Game Show Network for a while.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

There's a game show network???

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

it's not a Cdn network, obviously.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Round the clock airings of Reach For the Top, Front Page Challenge, Definition, and Smart Ask!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

W/ Bumper Stumpers and Chain Reaction during prime time.

All Canadian game shows hand out Brother typewriters and Stouffer Stove Top Stuffing in lieu of Rice-A-Roni.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Also: Liar's Club, Talkabout and Just Like Mom!
Loblaws et al. should sponsor a game show that gives away President's Choice products, for life.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Just Like Mom!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

was that the one with alanis on it?

jones (actual), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

That was You Can't Do That On Television. Which was amazing.
"Duh...I heard that!"

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

You Can't Do That on Television! Totally weird, freaked me out a bit as a kid, but I liked it. Cdn sketch comedy for kids!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, with the slime!!

jones (actual), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

you know what else was good? SWITCHBACK

jones (actual), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Slime, water and barfburgers.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Switchback was weird because it was regional. I think each province had its own. I didn't find this out (though, duh, I should have known) until I was 15 and I met this guy in Ottawa who used to do it there, and I was like "No you didn't."

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I took it back, Huk!

YCDTOTV was of course great.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I know you took it back, but I still felt the need to respond.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

We all loved You Can't Do That... here. I loved Moose. And it was my first exposure to kids saying "dod" for "dad".

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

You responded to a ghost, to a mirage! You are preaching to the wind!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

But where would I be without my Quixotic tendencies?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

No game show will ever come close to touching THE MAD DASH! Pierre Lalonde! Woo!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Why have I not seen this show?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

OMGOMGOMG.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

They were perhaps fools for not making the track slope up and down, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

o.m.g.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

More game shows that look like board games NOW.
It would be even more awesome if it had sloped hot-wheels-type tracks. And more loops of fire maybe.
I have never even heard of this show and feel like I've lost out.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

That Monopoly game show was awful, though. But I guess it looked pretty cool.

I hope that when you reached that first yellow square you were required to do a bongo solo.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

xpost - It's in Poland though!:
http://webhome.idirect.com/~sidneymc/img120.gif
"Duety do Mety (The Mad Dash) is the first English language Canadian created game show in 30 years to be produced internationally."
haha, yeah...

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Monopoly always ends in tears anyway. And kind of too boring for a game show (I really don't like Monopoly, obviously.)

Game of Life, however... And Snakes and Ladders. Those might work.
What was that game show for kids, with a funhouse-like set, possibly slime, plenty of loud noises? Was it Cdn or American?

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Well, no, Monopoly is a terrible game, but the game show version had almost nothing to do with the board game, except for it being terrible.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Hellooooooo. The Price i$ Right "The Race Game"!!!

I watched that the other day before a doctor's appointment. It's absolutely frightening how much that show has NOT changed since the 70s. The only that has changed is Bob Barker, the Bob Barker beauties, and the products/prices. All the sub-game props, the digital price displays, those weird trapezoidal price posterboards, those gaudy colors... all still there! OMFG.

Even then, not all the prizes have changed. "Sandy, how about a trip to PHILADELPHIA!" Sandy: "OMG! *covers mouth*"

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

But anyway, Red Green!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

oh no. And I thought I hated bobbleheads as much as I possibly could already...

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Yet, I'd still prefer watching an all day marathon of the Red Green show, over watching, oh, 10 minutes of Home Improvement.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

God, I totally remember The Mad Dash. Also, Pitfall with Alex Trebek.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

Pitfall was awesome. Though the falls were a little too controlled for my taste.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I forgot about Tri beck.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

My mom didn't like for me to watch Pitfall, so I always assumed it was a very sexy show. Though whenever I snuck a peek, it never seemed terribly risque.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
I wonder if the people on the Polish version of The Mad Dash can also win Z-Brick.
