Ok, so friends of ours insist that Uncle Joe's was bought, is open for the last time tonight, and is giving away all their beer. I can't vouch for whether this is true, but I'm going over there around 9:30 or 10 to find out. FAFP anyone?

Uncle's Joe's myspace message:

I am no more.
Body: Unfortunatly Uncle Joes has been sold and shut down. This is a sad day for Jersey City.
I have just been informed that there will be one last party here tonight. Most of the liquor is gone but there is really, really, really cheap tap beer ; )
We will be putting back the PA system in for one last night so that the DJ can rock you out one last time. Hope to see you there.

Drink me dry.

Eh, it wasn't the greatest bar ever, but it had some character. It was also a block from my house. It was also the only goddamned place in this goddamned town that actually had bands.

three months pass...
Group of squatters is chased from a condemned bar

A group of squatters occupying a shuttered Downtown bar were kicked out by city officials yesterday, reports said.

Uncle Joe's Bar, on First Street off Marin Boulevard, was closed several months ago after building inspectors determined the building was unsafe, reports said, and last week it was condemned, officials said.

City officials were tipped yesterday that squatters were occupying the building, Fire Department Deputy Director Jerome Cala said, and when inspectors arrived they saw several people run out of the building. One man stayed behind and argued with inspectors, but fled when police showed up, Cala said.

The squatters were apparently using an illegal hookup to a PSE&G pole to steal electricity, Cala said. The hookup was disconnected yesterday by PSE&G workers, Cala said.

The bank that now owns the building also was contacted and told it must secure the building, Cala said.

I never heard anything about it having been closed because of fire safety issues. I was just told (by employees) that the owner wanted to sell it.
