Small explosions at British Consolate in NYC?

On the early AM news programs on all NYC channels. Apparently two grenades were tossed at the consulate on Third Avenue in Midtown. No injuries, some broken glass, a major traffic hassle. I assume the elections will go on as planned.

Reports that a note was found nearby saying "don't even THINK of leaving the coalition of the willing" are as yet unconfirmed.

Channel 7: "It's election day today in Britain, so someone was sending a very clear message to voters there..."

Oh, a clear message, with small bombs encased in what appeared to be cases shaped like a lemon and a pineapple?

.. in the wrong country?

Why do I have a feeling the motivation for this is going to be something completely nonsensical, like opposition to the Twinings tea cartel?

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a bit of fun (meddling kids remix)

toy grenades modified with gunpowder, set off at 3.50 am, seem to indicate a drunken prank rather than a message to british voters.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

how drunk do you have to be to want to do that then?

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the previous "message" to voters was the mass rush-hour destruction in spain. it seems a bit strange that the scale would be ramped down to two plastic toys.. perhaps the terrorists ran out of cash?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps they misunderstood the meaning of "plastic explosives"????

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 5 May 2005 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

or were just REALLY drunk.

It's a quiet morning in New York City... until a massive bomb explodes in the Bonwit Teller department store, causing several vehicles to flip, and causing several drivers to come to a sudden stop. This throws the NYPD into a frenzy, trying to sort out what's going on. At the station, Inspector Walter Cobb of the NYPD's major case unit gets a call from a man who calls himself Simon...

GMA: "Nobody has stepped forward to claim responsibility, and police are combing the area for more toy handgrenades." And then they cut to CCTV footage of a robbery at an Arkansas 7/11, when a robber armed with a 2x4 was fought off by a shopkeeper with a mop.

I'm just waiting to find out who turns 100 today.

At least it's sort-of got the Americans interested in our election.

how drunk do you have to be to want to do that then?

And who would have access to these materials, and be able to maintain this state of drunkeness throughout the whole operation?

ugh. gawker has a blurb hysterically equating this incident with iraqi insurgent activity.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The first reports said one was the size of a lemon, the other was a pineapple... But now it sounds like they were literally a plastic lemon and pineapple. I'm studying at home today (only a few blocks away) and would REALLY appreciate if the helicopters would go away now.

hi aaron!!!!!!!!!!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe the NY authorities actually used the words "improvised explosive device" at their news conference about this, providing a rhetorical link to Iraqi insurgent activity. Blrgh.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fox 5 local coverage, at least early on, was pretty much entirely devoted to how this all fucks up the bus schedule. Seemed like the right angle to me.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

brian lehrer talked about it for like a second, now he's on to more important news like the williamsburg redevelopment.
