Londoners, Oxforders, FABRAG? (er, fancy a bike ride and gig?) saturday may 21st

as discussed on the london rolling walking thread, plans are afoot for a london to oxford bike ride on saturday 21st. it's about 60 miles, and the terrain (from the window of the bus last week anyway) looked hilly enough to be interesting without actually being vicious at any point.

my friend david has a map of the cycle route from here to there and it starts somewhere in putney, so we were thinking of getting there for around 9am and leaving asap. the ride itself should take between 4 and 6 hours, i think? obviously we'll not be racing, but neither will we be spending hours and hours in the pub at lunchtime, so we should be in oxford for about 5pm (notwithstanding any disasters).

if you're a mentalist you can turn around and cycle straight back, but it might be more pleasant to sit in the pub for a bit showing off about how mega-hard we all are and then get the train or oxford tube (oxford tube does take bikes - only two at a time, but the buses go every 12 mins in the daytime, every 30 or 60 after about 10pm and they run 24 hours) home instead.

this is NOT the london-oxford-walking-punting-biking-drinking-triathlon-mega-event, we are saving that one for another day.

who wants to play?

i haf also noticed the magic numbers are playing at the oxford zodiac that night, so i am going there to see them after the ride if anyone wants to join? tix are £8.75 inc bkg fee from www.seetickets.com, www.gigsandtours.com, 01865 420 042 and they're not sold out yet cos i just bought two but i have a feeling they might sell out soonish.

obv that part is open to oxforders who think we are crazy fules for cycling 60 miles when not under duress and just want to point and laugh. johnney? markh?

Is the Oxford Tube too expensive or something? Why would anyone want to do this? It is madness.

Still waiting for bike from Germany but hopefully yes. I shall be puffing at the back.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 May 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

heh naw not on a40. *every single person* i have mentioned this to has made that exact same crack.

martin, it's because cycling is a bit like flying.

Maybe I shall go to Oxford on the tube and laugh at you in the pub. But for some reason I think I'm supposed to do something important on that day though I can't for the life of me think what it is.

(How was your election party, Emsk? And shall we party in the park on Saturday? Barden's is lovely, I was at a gig there last weekend!)

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

((In fact, sorry to derail, but how about Stoke Newington Cemetary before the gig on Saturday? Safety in numbers so I won't get hassled by a pervert again, sigh.))

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

derail all you like, it's quiet in 'ere. the election party was VERY DRUNK, i woke up at 6 this morning on the sofa with my laptop on my legs and the dregs of a bottle of wine in my hand. come and larf at us in the pub! and do you like ver magic numbers? stoke n cemetery sounds great, let's pretend we're goths.

emsk, Friday, 6 May 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

There are no goths. Too many gayboys have driven them away.

Wine... uuurrrgggghhhhh. Can you believe #5 bottles of wine in the pub last night? That's cheaper than buying one after hours at a cornershop!

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

haha "uuurrrrrgh" i felt dusty when i got up but - hey! - i went for a ride to the post office and now am awake and shiny. what pub was dat? when can we go to that nice pub again, the one we found after the art thing in dulwich?

emsk, Friday, 6 May 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yes! We should go there now that it is summer and outdoors will be lovely! The Railway Tavern, that was its name. SARF LONDON FAP!!! SARF LONDON FAP!!!

(The pub last night was the Polar Bear, just off Leicester Fields, yes I know, ugh, but cheap as f*ck and it was Cliquey Trigger, oops, I mean, Poptimism)

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

haha kate at first i thought you meant #5 as in bottle of wine number 5!! and i was about to be impressed. (i only managed 3 :( my poor head)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

oh poptimism yes i might've gone if not for election nonsense. i thought you meant 5 bottles of wine too! ok sarf london fap at ver railway, shit haf jus looked at diary and why am i suddenly so busy? i got no free weekends til the first one in june!

emsk, Friday, 6 May 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Emsk, I SO want to do this (all the more so as I live in Putney which makes it totally ideal) but have my best mate's stag do that night and can't really knacker myself out for it :(

If it has to change for any reason (except to the following Saturday when the wedding's happening) let me know and I'll make space in my diary for it.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

oh bugger :( i don't have any other weekends til june and i wanna do it at least a month before the brighton one (june 19th) so i can figure out if i should be doing any extra rides to practise or anything... but i think the crap triathlon involving this very same ride, mark h's oxfordshire countryside walk and some punting action will happen sometime in july, so let's just make sure we do that one when you can make it? like you're the king and we're testing the route for you to make sure it's not poisoned.

emsk, Friday, 6 May 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

holy shit.

david eventually found the map and apparently it is, er, 98 miles long. how? does it go via kent? we will prob not be able to do this easily in a day (although... the dunwich dynamo... rowr. if it wasn't same w/e as truck i would be so up for that!).

anyway. ver boys are getting together this weekend to look at maps and discuss in a boyesque fashion, and considering leaving from hampton court or windsor instead (plenty trains from waterloo, waterloo easier/quicker to ride to than putney for most of us anyway). i am considering cycling on friday afternoon to wherever we decide to leave from on saturday morning, since on fridays i am usually just a layabout, and camping there overnight.
