Police, unable to identify the child, named her Precious Doe.

Twee police officers: C/D?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure how twee it is to find a decapitated little girl and think 'o is she just the cutest little thing? let's name her precious doe'.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I read this a little while ago. Just when I thought I couldn't get more disgusted with humanity, I got to the part about where they didn't call for medical attention and just "let the girl lie motionless for two days" because they had warrants out. GUH.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the story itself is depressing as hell.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh fuck. This world. This fucking world.

Huk-L, Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, these parents are sick fucks.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCKING FREAKY BUST

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it Doe you're looking for?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Neds rush in where Eisbars fear to tread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel nothing but hatred for the parents.

I'm still disturbed that the police chose to name this child Precious Doe! Am I completely overreacting or is that just... needlessly flippant?

(Yeah, you read that correctly; I, DAN PERRY, AM CRITICIZING SOMEONE ELSE FOR BEING NEEDLESSLY FLIPPANT.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i'ma beat this to death:

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Precious Doe thing really is utterly strange.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was meant to be along the lines of "Jane Doe." Precious isn't an entirely uncommon name for black girls, right? I think I saw it on that freakonomics thread.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure you're right, teeny, but that still doesn't make it any less bizarro to me. If the child had been Asian, would they have called her Pei Fong Doe???

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah usually kids under 5 or 6 get the epitaph "Baby Doe", regardless of race. Dan's right, it's totally abnormally quaint.

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I want to read this story; I'll just get agitated. Perry's right, though. "Precious Doe" isn't reverent, it's creepily twee.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that there's a chinese restaurant in my town called "precious doe" (no joke!)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I am unsuccessfully trying to stop my brain from imagining the KC police chief walking up to the cop who found her and asking, "What do we have here, Officer Gollum?"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/05/09/precious.doe.ap/index.html

Okay, this has gone from surreal to really, really, REALLY upsetting. I can't believe this guy is going to try to abdicate responsibility for this outlandishly heinous act by claiming the "I was really high" defense. SO WHAT YOU WERE HIGH???? You chose to take drugs you couldn't handle and you're still responsible for your actions, fuckface.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The last paragraph, frankly, is all too TMI

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I should stop reading about this story because it's making me (unreasonably) upset. Granted, part of the reason I'm getting upset is because my defense mechanisms are kicking in and generating a lot of nervous inappropriate giggling and in this particular case I don't really want to make jokes to protect myself. This is just horrible.

(This is not stopping me from snickering at "Pei Fong Doe". I hate myself.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The government should legalize all illicit substances and then remove any legal protections that may hypothetically eist for doing something astoundingly fucked-up while on something. Jesus fucking Christ, do what you want but accept the consequences of your actions!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm...never heard the argument phrased that way before but it does have something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This reminds me of poor Adam.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

what legal protections are these dan?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, hence the use of the word "hypothetical"; my reasoning is that if he's blaming his actions on the drugs he was taking, he must think there's some basis for getting himself absolved of blame for this.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(Then again, if my presumption that this guy is black is actually true, I have nothing to worry about as they are currently preparing a snug hole underneath the jail in which to throw him.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I would classify his drug claim as an explanation perhaps but not an excuse.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)
